The gap between value and price continues to get worse with sealed. The solution? Apparently, WotC believes its increasing the price on sealed some more. I really enjoyed opening sealed products but for the last 16 months I just can't justify the cost and now it looks like it's another year of singles only. It's depressing and I just don't understand why they think this is good for the game.
@@MH-pe8wj Had to check to make sure... The only one that's outrageous is Commander Masters. Lord of the Rings is high, but less than $200 for set boosters (collector's are out of line high, though,) and MotM are at a regular price (nowadays...) but draft boosters are high compared to set ones. Either they're gonna raise set prices for MotM, or they lower the draft (we know they won't do that...)
The fact that all these foil, borderless, alternate art cards are so cheap is actually good. Affordable cards are good. The problem is the price of the box.
Solid agree. The collectors boosters would make excellent prize packs if the boosters were distributed to game stores in limited runs at the same price as draft boosters.
Sadly, due to Influencers and larger game stores, a false demand has made them so over printed, that as soon as release hits, the Big game stores and Influencers rip everything, presell, and then flood market to the point that a small lgs has and will literally go under, solely from Magic sales. The game needs more players and alot less greedy people trying to make a buck.
It has at the very least demolished any and all will i had to open boosters at all. As someone who mostly collects and plays online because of a lack of community around it where i live i no longer see a reason to open boosters. Why would i buy the normal set boosters if collector boosters exist, why would i buy collector boosters when they're overpriced to an inane degree and they don't even have enough packs to make for a fun opening.

Omg, thank you so much for adding the "Now Playing" element to these videos! I've always enjoyed the music for the booster box games, so this is great.
Make it a HowToBasic type video where it's him trying his damnedest to get through the shrinkwrap, be it with fire, a jackhammer, cooking it in a sauté pan and sitting down for dinner only to break his fork on it, etc. Every time something doesn't work, it shows a quick cut-in to his face and a frustrated scream as his sanity deteriorates for half an hour!
I miss the excitement of opening a foil and that being something to enjoy and know you got a price boost. Now there's too many arts which is fine for just playing but makes opening packs less enjoyable at times.
@@SpindlyTree86 My favorite pack I opened back in the day was a Non-foil Cavern of Souls and a Foil Gisela, Blade of Goldnight. Makes me sad that people don't get to enjoy that feeling anymore. New arts are cool but there are so many it feels not special anymore.

Ever since my disappointing box of Baldur's Gate, I always take the advice "Buy Singles from your LGS." So much so, that I've met a few great friends at the LGS, and even started hosting large Magic nights locally. Not buying things like collector boosters has made me appreciate The Gathering so much more.
Yeah, baldur's gate was a really odd set to open. Infinite amount of the same legends and none of the good cards... Buy singles! From locals in the store or the store itself!
it's still fun to get a pack here an there because I find stuff I didn't know about, but putting the time in to look at the sets and know what I want and don't want, and to buy the stuff I want feels so much better in the long run. I ended up buying the phyrexian showcase lands for my vampire orzov deck and it kind of hurt to spend $25 bucks on lands but not as much as buying a set booster box and just *hoping* I got them.

Rasputin Dreamweaver is a Legends Rare, reserved list, with only two printings in 1994: English and italian Legends. In Europe you can get it for 210 USD in nice condition, and that is the english version, italian is much cheaper. He is a bomb in commander, he ramps colorless mana, gives you 7 colorless when you manage to flicker him, you can build a mean eldrazi tron.

Idk, I don't really like how so many cards don't really look like Magic cards anymore. B&W art also makes it harder to tell what's actually depicted, and being absolutely coated with foil Phyrexian symbols looks kind if gaudy IMO, and doesn't help with the art being hard to identify.

I used to play foil basics from Mirrodin and Unhinged, now its all Beta in all my decks. All the new fancy versions made me do it. Putting Beta basics from 1993 into all my decks now, if i run out i will buy more. Some go for unglued nonfoil basics, this set pre-dates foil cards and these are the first fullart basic lands ever released to my knowledge, and there is only one version for each. Some go for unlimited basics as the only white-bordered cards in the deck (apart from dual lands) for easier fetchland use. Or revised basic lands to go with revised dual lands, again for fetchland use. What i feel is that all the variants make people desire a permanent solution across all decks. One recognizable version across all decks and be done with it. So a newer, fancier version comes along and noone cares. Fetchlands play a role, failing to quickly find your fetchland target feels bad. With these new ones, and i agree they look nice, the sensible options are: Ignore them, or buy 100 and use them consistently for ALL your decks.
@@MrCenturion13 I still do not like alpha, it makes weird wear patterns on the sleeves which make your deck marked. This matters for tournaments, not for EDH, in tournaments Alpha comes with the burden of having to re-sleeve the entire deck often. I like the consistency. I think Alpha/Beta and Unglued basics are most recognizable across the table, 1993 due to nostalgia and Unglued due to the very good, unique design. Its like these are most friendly for people with impaired vision. Beta is a bit of a flex, as these are pricy. The reason why i do not go for unlimited to match my white-bordered dual lands is a bit sick, i play no white-bordered duals. I play foreign limited black-bordered french/italian/german duals. These raise eyebrows, they look even better than Beta. Frame looks like 4th edition black-bordered, color saturation and print quality are really high, and many people do not even know these exist. Low print run. So its always a bit of a moment when you play a black-bordered french Underground Sea.
to add to this: just cracked a Dominaria Remastered draft too and well, it would've actually made the booster box game and contained more value than the Phyrexia collector box I opened yesterday. If not for the alt art Force of Will I pulled on my second to last pack, that box would've been very comparable to the Profs though. Until then the highest value I pulled was Yawgmoth, alt art No Mercy, foil Entomb and two Mystical Tutors. So yeah, gonna end on that high note. Hopefully got pack-cracking out of my system for at least a couple of months now lol

I just finished opening mine. I didn't even reach 120$. My woes are many, and my days will now be few. I didn't think I could possibly get under HALF the sale price, but I did. I will now always stare at this box with shame, thinking I could've got something over 25 dollars.

I just opened my collectors yesterday, compleat vorinclex, four Nissa with two being compleat, 4 wanderer, foil norn, and well over $560 in value. I was absolutely floored, and had a total of 12 planeswalkers in the box, new kaya, two Kaitos, it was amazing. I was expecting to get burnt, but sometimes the luck pulls through

I got myself a pack 2 weeks ago for my birthday. The most value I got, no kidding is a foil basic land. Overall less than 5$ value😅😅 I was quite mad at myself for falling in the trap!
I got a collector box of All Will Be One on release day for 225$ from my LGS and even had the guy behind the counter pick my box from a case that one box taken out. The box ended up being pure fire as I pulled an Elesh Norn regular art foil, the Step and Compleat foil Jin-Gitaxias, Progress Tyrant and also a foil Borderless Concept Praetor Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider. Three cards almost got me as much value as the cost of the box!!!!! I was VERY happy to say the least. Cheers and good luck to the rest of you.
My recent purchases: Unlimited Tropical Island, english Legends Rasputin Dreamweaver, a Time Spiral from Urzas Saga, and 1998 Urzas Saga prerelease foil Lightning Dragon. All 4 are reserved list, one is for fun/collecting and the first ever official release of a foil card, 3 are great for commander. Apart from the unlimited Dual, what you paid for the boxes gives you enough budget to buy the others. These are truly iconic cards. Price for both boxes also gets you in range for a real Dual land.
Cracking packs is so much fun though. I often think about how much fun it would be just to sit down with one of these creators and talk about the game while opening packs.
I did a sealed thing with friends early this week with my box of Dominaria Remastered. My box, though, was pretty fantastic in terms of value. 2 FoWs (one old border, one full art), Mystical and Enlightened tutors (old border Mystical), foil full art Entomb, full art Urza's Incubator, BoP, regular and full art Mystic Remora, Gauntlet of Power. So in the end it was really good. But still - we played so that was the big important part.
Dunno whether it's the alcohol or mah brain but ''after the laughter from them resides'' tickled me to the next plane over. That was a throw away sentence but it hit me with the big funny haha's. you win todays funny.

Was literally talking about this earlier this morning. Buying booster packs (regardless of draft, set or collector) is a gamble. It’s basically like buying a lottery ticket. You might win something, but most of the time you will not. Case in point: before this set, last box I bought was New Capenna. Which was an absolute dumpster fire of a set. I did buy a set booster box (and a half) of Phyrexia and got some sweet pulls. But for every set you pull great from, there will always be one or two that will be terrible. Opening these, you understand the risk, and realize you could walk away with nothing. Get what you need, buy the singles you need. If you play the booster box game expecting to pull that Elesh Norn, you will ALWAYS be disappointed.
The Collector's and Booster box games are my favorite, though I must admit that your lessons in buying singles hasn't quite sunk in. It's hard buying a $100 card, when I can get a box of cards and grow my collection. I'm trying to look for deals, but they are hard to come by with singles 😔
something that may help: consider why you are growing your collection. Is having a lot of cards what you want from the game? what is the point of having a larger collection for you? is it for options for deckbuilding? is it because it feels good? is it because you want to have more cards than your friend? consider also that the majority of cards you own will never be looked at played with, used, etc. bar specific circumstances that the average mtg player won't likely be meeting. basically, if you want to build decks proxy, if you want singles buy them. I promise it will save you money in the long run. Plus if you are buying singles you get the exact card you want 100% of the time rather than any pack randomness.
If I played competitively I would buy singles (and I do buy singles to finish a deck), but my friends and I play casually. I use the cards that go unnoticed in pauper and just for fun. I have sold my collection through the years (out of guilt and shame, because I was made to feel bad about playing the game), and I definitely don't have more cards than my friends. I really enjoy flipping through my bulk, and rediscovering cards, and then go, "Let's try to make this work. "
@@sidious247 in that case, if you still want to be gathering cards for those reasons, may I suggest bulk lots? obviously the cards may not necessarily all be NM as they would be out of packs but it will still be a way to bolster your collection to do more to the stuff you want but will still save you money
Had lots of fun as usual with this. I would once again like to request considering a softer, less intrusive sound alert when you pull a money card. That "Cha Ching" is very loud and imo ruins the chill vibe your great music Playlist brings to the table.
Played a draft yesterday with a Dominaria Remastered Box I bought. Even with the draft enviroment not being the best, and the 24 boosters sorta paying their cost, the fun drafting with friends was priceless. Drafts are always fun with good friends... I just hope WotC don't forget that, as many players fears that draft boosters could be dropped entirely in the future...
me and 3 friends actually DID draft a collector box once, we did a 4 player draft of Strixhaven, and it was one of the most fun drafts i've ever done, it was such a weird and fun environment, tho i suspect that it was in part because of the archive cards.

I love your content!!!! I do always disagree with your collector box hate based off personal preference with my collection. I'm a quality not quantity kinda guy. I'd rather have binders full of viable playing cards than boxes full of bulk that I can't do anything with or get rid of. I buy singles mostly, and collectors' boxes when I'm super jazzed about a new set. I almost am always a little below what I bought it for in value, but I love being apart of the pack breaking community at times. Thanks as always for everything you do for the community!

Yeah, Elesh Norn single price is much more palatable after watching this.
But sometimes I don't know what I want next until chance gives me some new cards to build around. So there's that.

I just opened my collectors yesterday, compleat vorinclex, four Nissa with two being compleat, 4 wanderer, foil norn, and well over $560 in value.
I was absolutely floored, and had a total of 12 planeswalkers in the box, new kaya, two Kaitos, it was amazing.
I was expecting to get burnt, but sometimes the luck pulls through

I got myself a pack 2 weeks ago for my birthday. The most value I got, no kidding is a foil basic land. Overall less than 5$ value😅😅 I was quite mad at myself for falling in the trap!

I got a collector box of All Will Be One on release day for 225$ from my LGS and even had the guy behind the counter pick my box from a case that one box taken out. The box ended up being pure fire as I pulled an Elesh Norn regular art foil, the Step and Compleat foil Jin-Gitaxias, Progress Tyrant and also a foil Borderless Concept Praetor Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider. Three cards almost got me as much value as the cost of the box!!!!! I was VERY happy to say the least. Cheers and good luck to the rest of you.

My recent purchases: Unlimited Tropical Island, english Legends Rasputin Dreamweaver, a Time Spiral from Urzas Saga, and 1998 Urzas Saga prerelease foil Lightning Dragon. All 4 are reserved list, one is for fun/collecting and the first ever official release of a foil card, 3 are great for commander. Apart from the unlimited Dual, what you paid for the boxes gives you enough budget to buy the others. These are truly iconic cards. Price for both boxes also gets you in range for a real Dual land.

I did a sealed thing with friends early this week with my box of Dominaria Remastered. My box, though, was pretty fantastic in terms of value. 2 FoWs (one old border, one full art), Mystical and Enlightened tutors (old border Mystical), foil full art Entomb, full art Urza's Incubator, BoP, regular and full art Mystic Remora, Gauntlet of Power. So in the end it was really good. But still - we played so that was the big important part.
Dunno whether it's the alcohol or mah brain but ''after the laughter from them resides'' tickled me to the next plane over. That was a throw away sentence but it hit me with the big funny haha's. you win todays funny.
I like the feeling of opening packs. It’s fun. I get to keep bulk and build out a bunch of commander decks

Was literally talking about this earlier this morning. Buying booster packs (regardless of draft, set or collector) is a gamble. It’s basically like buying a lottery ticket. You might win something, but most of the time you will not. Case in point: before this set, last box I bought was New Capenna. Which was an absolute dumpster fire of a set. I did buy a set booster box (and a half) of Phyrexia and got some sweet pulls. But for every set you pull great from, there will always be one or two that will be terrible. Opening these, you understand the risk, and realize you could walk away with nothing. Get what you need, buy the singles you need. If you play the booster box game expecting to pull that Elesh Norn, you will ALWAYS be disappointed.
You can definitely draft collector packs, I’ve done this quite a bit now, it’s pretty fun, specially for not great draft formats like all will be one

The Collector's and Booster box games are my favorite, though I must admit that your lessons in buying singles hasn't quite sunk in. It's hard buying a $100 card, when I can get a box of cards and grow my collection.
I'm trying to look for deals, but they are hard to come by with singles 😔
something that may help: consider why you are growing your collection. Is having a lot of cards what you want from the game? what is the point of having a larger collection for you? is it for options for deckbuilding? is it because it feels good? is it because you want to have more cards than your friend? consider also that the majority of cards you own will never be looked at played with, used, etc. bar specific circumstances that the average mtg player won't likely be meeting. basically, if you want to build decks proxy, if you want singles buy them. I promise it will save you money in the long run. Plus if you are buying singles you get the exact card you want 100% of the time rather than any pack randomness.
If I played competitively I would buy singles (and I do buy singles to finish a deck), but my friends and I play casually. I use the cards that go unnoticed in pauper and just for fun.
I have sold my collection through the years (out of guilt and shame, because I was made to feel bad about playing the game), and I definitely don't have more cards than my friends.
I really enjoy flipping through my bulk, and rediscovering cards, and then go, "Let's try to make this work. "
@@sidious247 in that case, if you still want to be gathering cards for those reasons, may I suggest bulk lots? obviously the cards may not necessarily all be NM as they would be out of packs but it will still be a way to bolster your collection to do more to the stuff you want but will still save you money

Played a draft yesterday with a Dominaria Remastered Box I bought. Even with the draft enviroment not being the best, and the 24 boosters sorta paying their cost, the fun drafting with friends was priceless. Drafts are always fun with good friends... I just hope WotC don't forget that, as many players fears that draft boosters could be dropped entirely in the future...
Watching that Dom. Remasters opening was painful.. Im so sorry for your loss.. ^_^
me and 3 friends actually DID draft a collector box once, we did a 4 player draft of Strixhaven, and it was one of the most fun drafts i've ever done, it was such a weird and fun environment, tho i suspect that it was in part because of the archive cards.

I love cracking packs!! It’s a rush, a gamble. I once bought a single pack of Throne of Eldraine from Walmart for no reason, just cause I saw it at checkout. Hit a borderless foil Oko before he was banned. Sold it for $100 the next FNM!!! Dopamine packs 4 life lol

I do always disagree with your collector box hate based off personal preference with my collection. I'm a quality not quantity kinda guy. I'd rather have binders full of viable playing cards than boxes full of bulk that I can't do anything with or get rid of. I buy singles mostly, and collectors' boxes when I'm super jazzed about a new set. I almost am always a little below what I bought it for in value, but I love being apart of the pack breaking community at times.
