So far I've only bought two collector boxes, Kamigawa Neon. Which I cracked and it paid for itself (Thank you Boseiju). But that's not something that I can count on happening I just love kamigawa and got lucky to get what I spent in value lol. And the other box which I may not crack is Dominaria Remastered. Haven't decided if I'm ever going to open it up but otherwise I don't buy collector boxes lol.

i am a new player who started magic around 3 months ago the community and games are great and honestly the question of collectors booster packs been on my mind for a long while as the reason that got me going was the art
but you're definitely right about what these boxes are worth where i live they cost 110-160$+ due to resellers and shipping oversees more than their asking price so yeah they definitely aren't worth it

Beware Hello fresh is a subscription service. They aren’t very forth-write with this information. I got the discount which is very much appreciated but today I was charged $90 for another delivery which I wasn’t expecting. They would not let me cancel it because it was too close to the delivery date. Buyer beware.
Opening a collector's box is like eating an entire bag of chips. It's fun in the moment but it's ultimately empty calories that don't feel good. When everything is special, nothing is.

I don't know if you'll see this, but I want to say that these videos really help me! I have an addictive personality and am constantly controlling the urge to gamble. I used to open tons of packs and boxes of another tcg, and moved to mtg a few years ago. I started off by buying packs and boxes, but videos like these have really helped give me more reason to just buy singles. Every time I'm tempted to buy a box or a bunch of packs for fun, I think of all the 'dead' boxes you open as a reminder I'm more than likely gonna lose. I still open packs sometimes for fun, but I no longer open to gamble to get a card. Singles are ALWAYS the right choice!

@@Zen-rd9np Believe me, you're far better off without them! The last tcg I played didn't have easy access to singles in my area so I convinced myself boxes were easier than ordering from out of the city. I dropped probably 3k or more before finally realising what damage I was doing to myself. Luckily I was in a place where I didn't get financially hurt from it (though I sacrificed a lot of proper meals lol), but I'd be a lot better off if I hadn't. Always say no to boxes :')
Not only that but offloading the chaff is so difficult these days as there is rarely a market for it.
I occasionally still buy a set booster box and I use them as self-rewards to help me maintain habits with my ADHD. When I remember to do the shit I need to do constistenly (I use one of those gamified habit apps to keep track), I get to open a couple. Beyond that, singles all the way.,
That borderless, Anime-style Graaz, while only worth 33 cents (for now), is absolutely SICK. 13:43

Dang, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the cards of Brothers War...and I still think there are around a dozen other recent sets I still missed. MTG is becoming so overwhelming and exhausting. I don't even want to try to build new decks anymore.
I seriously can't wait for Sorcery - Contested Realm to come out.
the problem you have is not the extend and amount of cards.
Just go to your collection.
Look at what you own.
Build with what you own and forget the rest.
If you see anything interesting, take a note and well 🤷♂️.

Phyrexia AWBO is a pretty sweet set and has awesome alternate frames and such, but idk if the hype of it being the newest thing will live up to the lands we literally need to play the game with.
I also hate the Step and Compleat foils. To me, they feel cheap since it’s a plastic layer on top with a gaudy stamp all over it
To be fair, the Fast Lands in ONE are a staple of competitive formats. But on the other hand you could also pull them as Expeditions in Zendikar Rising.
Ooooh okay. This is gonna be interesting. I got back into MTG around when Zendikar Rising came out, and adored it immensely. Like, legitimately great fun.
And Phyrexia All Will be One and March of the machines killed so many of the characters I liked a lot IN Zendikar Rising.
In fact it killed all of them.

@Helminth Combos I think the last time we had a set/block without a previously appearing character was way back in lorwyn block, if i'm correct. Since then, every set/block (besides adventures in the forgotten realms) has included at least one reoccurring character.

I believe what you're labeling as "oil foil" those are known as "step and compleat foil" ...the cards with the little phyrexian logos across them. Pretty sure only oil slick raised foil comes inside the Phyrexia Compleat Bundle

I agree but I understand the corporate desire to have a "premium" product for those that want it. I think they should have draft and collector and that's it. Get rid of set boosters and jumpstart boosters to minimize confusion and product overload at the shelf. And this is coming from someone that buys set boosters.
Capitalism does exist and will ruin hobbies and art as long as it is profitable to do so.
I do like these box opening videos. I block channels that have "mega box opening" videos because at that point, it feels very much like those creepy toddler present opening videos, but I also like seeing a kind of breakdown of what to expect on a random buy. That extra $30 could have been an amazing card that was instead pissed away on "it could even be a boat!" It's interesting to note that holding sealed product is just hoping that somebody in the future is going to cave on a nostalgia buy and definitely isn't going to get his/her money's worth. Urza's Saga booster boxes are guaranteed to come nowhere close to their buying price in contents, but it'll probably be used as an investment for a channel starter.
Im getting heavy back into this game animi so happy your channel exists man, it has been so insightful and fulfilling to explore the varying avenues / understanding the most efficient way to play - both financially and entertainment. 2 weeks ago I was buying set booster after set booster, you have taught me to just stick to the bundles (which I personally love) and buy singles of whatever else I want in the set. Excited to continue my journey with your channel!

As for which box will perform better, anyone playing Magic for any length of time should know that a strong Rare land cycle in a product is typically where a huge chunk of value that can be nearly depended on. Unfortunately for the Collector boosters from Zendikar, they can be hit or miss, but if you pull any amount of the special treatment fetches you are golden. My money is on Zendikar because I never believe the hype around new set that always inflates the prices of what turns out to be mostly bulk rares once the market settles.
I love how Prof is also looking at the MtG narrative and just going "They have to be planning to hit the reset button, right?"
Intereting to see how close the Zendikar Rising box came... for a moment, I thought you might make it! Still, a good chunk came from those box toppers and about $40 short is a not insignificant chunk of change!
So a while back I made a cube for my playgroup, mostly ravnica and war of the spark with some kaladesh thrown in there.
And now with this set having so many beautiful artifact or proliferate cards going for dirt cheap I am so excited to update and improve that cube 😄

This is why I mainly buy singles, just spent $26 the other day to order almost all the cards (66) I wanted from the new set and $9 of it was for Wren and Seven for my wife's deck lol.
As a guy who's always been on the edge of splurging and buying one of these things, thank you, truly. Addictive mindsets and people susceptible to FOMO need this kind of information. I really appreciate you sharing it.

I've been focusing more recently on learning about the history in the MTG, I can't right now have expanses with cards, but I'm thinking in collect some sets in a binder just for the beauty and history, fist one I was thinking on being Phyrexia, love the Phyrexian art, and second one is Return of Avacyn but this more for a personal thing, I'm not much of a fan of buying boosters, cause you can easily spend more than it's worth, for buying all the cards from one set boosters can be a good option for the common's, but I know nothing don't follow anything about magic since 2015.
I really like this reminders, I already watched your previous videos about collector boosters not being worth it but after the preview of that serialized cards in Quenya for Universes Beyond I felt tempted

I really love watching your videos, I used to play about 20 years ago or so. Was a DCI standard tourny player, and occasional champ. Then I found out I had stomach cancer and quit. Gave most of my collection to a friend. To which he sold it almost immediately. I beat the cancer wanted to get some of my stuff back, but alas all gone. So my step son started playing recently and now I'm back. Can't wait to get in there and play again lol. LOVE YOUR VIDS BRO.

Watching this on the last day of March and the professor mentions a foot of snow. I wish we had that much. We've got about 3 feet on streets, sidewalks, etc. in my area (currently at 95.2 inches cumulative for 2022-2023 winter season) and we're slated to get roughly three-inches in the few days.

I buy one collector booster per set at prerelease so I get max value and to support my legs which carries very few singles, I try to buy one draft/set pack per visit again to support the store, otherwise I buy singles, this works well for me, I get the rush of pulling value some times but I'm not looking to invest in anything
This made me realize how lucky I was to pull the phyrexian foil jin-gitaxias with my one collector booster I bought.
I’ll be honest and say I have opened about 6 set boosters of ONE and each box pulled roughly $175+ in value back. The two collector boxes I opened I pulled about $150-$175 as well. I enjoyed opening the collectors more only due to the fact I was able to get the really sweet Step and Compleat foils. I think WOTC should do away with collector boxes and simply add the ability to pull the fancy chase foils and full arts in the set boxes. Make it to where the chance is low about 1%-5% but still it would probably increase sales on the set boxes and then also justify the prices of the set boxes a little more since they have increased so much over the last few years or they could increase the amount of collector packs to 24 instead of 12 packs. You just don’t get the value back from the collectors from what I have noticed. That’s my personal opinion though, still love cracking packs regardless!

I remember when I did my first few Drafts of MTG. One of them was Zendikar Rising and for the matches, I built an eh Blue Black Mill deck. It sorta worked but I almost won a game through deck out. Glacial Grasp and Zulaport Duelist were my main cards of milling.

Hey Prof, you are always harping on going to the LGS to play, which I like don't stop this, but standard shade is not helping it come back. Playing standard last week at the LGS for the first time since Covid was awesome. We only had seven players show up. zenidar rising's main problem is almost all the value are from those lands or pulling some of the absolutely top end extended/special foils otherwise it's pretty middling... and that's before reprints of these cards which are absolutely gonna get reprinted. at least phyrexia all will be one has special foiling and art styles that make it more unique as a collectors product.
I hope for a phyrexia vs eldrazi. Imagine the perfection fighting the endless need. Completed and uncompleted.

As a new player looking to get into the game and expand my collection. Are set boosters worth their price? Or would I be better off buying singles/focusing on just the deck I want to build?
I did this with Ikoria and it was A BLAST. I got 5 comic book triomes, and the jeskai one came in foil, Rhodan, extended art sharknado, extended art foil mothra, extended art Kudro, extended art foil extinction event, extended art foil emergent ultimatum, Foil Vince and of course, the mighty, the cursed, the FOIL CORONA! With many, many other EPIC cards, like Comic book gemraizer in its' 3D-style art, King Caesar Protector of Okinawa and apex predator foil, GODZILLA VS EXTENDED ART KING KONG! 2 Foils dire tactics to substitute in my pioneer precon deck. A bunch of comic book art foils, like 2 Vivien and 1 Narset in epic art...
While in ONE... i got 2 extended arts gauntlet, a non-readable Vraska, many funny rares in black and white frame, some anime Planeswalkers, and some weirdly curled foiling cards. And that's it. Not epic, not nostalgic, nothing at all.

I had the bright idea of buying a collector box to sell the cards to see if I could make any extra cash. I didn’t get any of the high roller cards. Total value was 180, if I could get the max for everything. I’ll never do that again. I did get some great cards for playing, but I’ll being staying away from collector packs.

Going for Zendikar as my guess. The older WOTC gets, the cheaper the value for their packs in standard get.

Booster Boxes and packs in general, I treat like scratch-off lottery tickets. I open them usually for fun, and hope for value. I never expect it.
Opened my first collector booster box while in Japan and got Atraxa, Mondrak, and Solphim in one pack, but got Doubling season, The Great Henge and Anointed procession for less than $100 in singles there so singles still win.

at this moment, probably ONE since some people havent gotten their fill of the Set. Unlike ZNR which have been cracked like crazy to get the foil expedition v2 lands
I personally think the zendikar box will have more value! All will be one is hot right now, but this box has stood the test of time. I think that Carries it further than what we have now. Especially cause fetchlands in premium versions always hold value, and even the hottest cards from ONE are still dropping about 10% per week

Man. I was hoping for Phyrexia to take the win, but i just finished that half box opening and it's not looking great. I know the fetch lands are gonna be a big deal in Zendikar, but ONE was the first collector booster box I ever bought and mine was incredible so I was hoping. :(

I do one collector pack a set as ritual and to sate the inner gambling bear in me. I've gotten some really fun finds and also remember why I just buys singles when I dont.
Personally my money is on Zendikar as not only are there still some normal bangers in that set but also because it has THE CRAB and a foil of that might fetch a decent price

My guess is ZNR. Rare lands and MDFCs help value a ton.
From my personal situation, both have equal value, because it adds resource fodder to my growing collection of proxies.

Thank you for fulfilling my need to see these boxes opened. I get a bit impulsive to buy things, which I can blame on having Tourette's Syndrome, but in reality I've been alive long enough to get that under control. Whenever I feel the urge to waste money on a box of lottery tickets I just watch you and it fulfills that craving in my brain.
I find these interesting, but am still trying to learn magic as it is now, and all the different art types and foil treatments are confusing to me, any chance of a video explaining what everything is and what it means?

There are no functional differences.
I have bought a total of 3 compleat phyrexia boosters. I am completely brand new to the game. Started like 2-3 weeks ago with getting cards. I have gotten good cards, one was this “eldest norn” foil that has art by some person “junti ito” ? I found out the next day that I pulled one of the more rarer and hard to get cards. I have yet to play my first game with ppl though (just online through the app by myself).

As requested I am guessing before any packs are opened. I think All Will Be One will win.
Other than the expeditions, the most valuable cards (nonfoil) are full art Agadeem's Awakening and Sea Gate Restoration at about 25. All Will Be One has multiple cards more valuable. Plus all the variants just means more chances *at* a valuable individual card.
Self-reply: guess I was wrong. I did remember the box topper ones and that foils of them could come in the packs, but I guess I enough of them were relatively lower value. Prof got a couple of really good ones among them, which definitely contributed to the value of the ZNR box.
I literally went "dam this is getting boring...pull an omnath or something maybe boarderless foil." And 10 seconds later look who shows his face.

Back on Magic after 20-year plus hiatus. I appreciate you suggesting to support local game stores but wow the price difference. Every local store around and every big box store is 50 dollars or more. Exit to exile for example was 55 at LGS and 35 shipping included online. The lack of an MSRP is just crazy. What the heck is up with all the rapid-fire New releases. Who can keep up with that and how many different ways are there to play magic.
