it's funny because i do that thing with me head also...i keep my head up not on the pad because if helps me "track" and "see" the bar better...and i feel and i now i can bench more that way...not saying that everyone should do it but if you're comfortable doing it...go for it.
The people who look the bar down it comes from years and years of being in a bench shirt, that's why you see raw lifters looking the bar down, they're trying to incorporate geared benching to raw benching which won't work.
