My $1500 Honda Civic Transformation | Before & After

  • This is the long awaited Honda Civic update video that you've been asking for! With a little time and very little money, I show you how I made a clean daily driver.
A little over a year ago I bought this 1999 Civic Ex for $1500 at a local dealership. It had a wrecked fender, missing mirror, and the interior was absolutely disgusting. Over the course of the year I replaced some damaged parts, did some DIY rattle can spray paint, detailed the interior, paint correction and coating on the exterior, and added some tasteful visual mods such as the replica Civic Type R front lip, EM1 Spoiler, HID bulbs, etc. Other mods included a stereo, subwoofer, amplifier, and AEM intake. The goal was to spend as little money as possible and make a noticeable before and after.
You don't have to have a lot of money to have a "clean" looking car. It all comes down to how to budget the money and making use of resources like eBay and local classifieds. I was able to transform the look of the car for around $500 dollars and add some additional mods for around $300. Not only is the car more fun to drive, but I get tons of compliments on the civic for how clean it is compared to the 90% of other civic's out there.I do have to remind them that it is a Ex model rather than a EM1 though haha. I hope this video is helpful for those who want to transform a civic in the future or start a cheap project car. I'm sure there will be more things I'll do to the car in the future, but this is my official one year review video on the progress I've made!
    Enjoy!

For the door, after doing the bodywork to the damaged area you should have painted it by spraying the inside perimeter of the fender for the hard to spray areas, then mounted it and got everything fitting nicely. then tape up the car leaving the fender and door exposed. then when you paint the fender you can blend the paint with the door and then clear coat over both complete. Thats the correct way to do it and even with a rattle can you can get some really good results if you do it right. Especially if you order the paint color matched to the cars paint code and have a good proper automotive clear to match. Both of which i know you can get in spray cans from a place like NAPA. Doing it this way (even easier and better results when you use a can of blending agent) you can then wet-sand with 2000 grit sand paper and polish out with G3 compound... the results would really surprise you.

Nice, clean, tasteful build! Paint looks great, even with the hard line. I honestly didn't even notice that until you pointed it out. I recently got into enjoying cars when my dad gave me his old 09 civic.
I've cleaned that car more in the year since I got it than he did in the 6 years he drove it. 🤔 it's nothing crazy, but i love that car! I just put a bluetooth compatible touchscreen radio in it, and had it detailed and waxed and it looks brand new. And of course the gas mileage is great. I got almost 45mpg on a turnpike a few weeks ago!

Not a Honda guy but you can't go wrong with a daily driver that you only pay $1500 out the door at a dealership and little more than another $800 in paint and mods. That thing is pretty sharp. I have been daily driving a 77 Skylark I bought from the "little old lady next door", literally, for $800 and then just cleaned it up and drive the last 15 years and al in as is I've got right about $2500 in it, I just bought an 1980 F150 with a 300 Inline 6 in it for $1000 and I'm gonna rebuild the engine and trans and just clean it up and throw a quick Duplicolor paint job on it and paint the wheels and just throw a set of baby moons on it.

I have a similar 01 Accord, and the sub rattle is no easy fix. I have dual 12's in the trunk and after 0.5 in of sound deadening material, the rear deck still rattles at certain frequencies and somewhere around the taillights (maybe the taillight mounting bracket, bumper clips, or loose wire harness plugs) produces a most heinous rattle.
    EZ rattle fixes include
Rear deck interior carpeted trim panel rattles against the rear deck itself: Shove socks into those oval shaped holes below the rear deck to separate the pieces (accessed from the trunk)
Interior plastic thing in top corner of rear window comes loose and rattles around: Just remove the feckin thing
Add foam or something under license plate
Spare change and loose washers are not fans of bass

I had one of these in high school. I both loved and hated that car. Mine had a lot of problems even two years after a graduated it still was down on a weekly basis but I kept it right till the deer took it out. Caved in the roof the hood bent a control arm and I still have flashbacks from the antlers being less than an inch from my face. That car sat in my yard for another 6 months untouched then one day I took a Kia sorrento and tried to jump it. Car barely turned over. So my reaction was leave the Kia hooked to it and at more charging power with my gmc envoy. After a few minutes the two suvs basically scared that car back to life. I drove it around in the yard for a few weeks and out into the pasture I ended up scraping that car and didn’t get near the $10,000 I had invested in it back out. In fact I barely got $100 out of it

I have the 99-00 Civic Si wing (mine is a legit Honda OEM wing but yours looks good too), my car is an EX, so it came with the side skirts, I have the Type-R front lip, the only difference is that my car has a Type-R grille, is much lower, has 17" Drag DR-16s finished in Nighthawk Black Pearl, and my car is 99-00 Civic Si Electron Blue Pearl. Oh, and it has a built LSVTEC turbo and makes about 500 horsepower to the wheels. I haven't watched the entire video, but this car is clean, and it looks like it's a good foundation that you can build on, if you are so inclined. Nice job with the civic. Mine is the same year and engine, serious clear coat damage and unlike yours, wasn't very well maintained =[
The previous owner put an intake from Advance Autoparts on there (the Spectre one). I have a question for you regarding the IAT sensor. I notice yours is plugged in to the grommet but it doesn't look like there is anything mechanical holding it in there. What is keeping there? The vacuum? Did you have to force it in there tight or could you easily pull it out? The last owner drilled too small of a hole I think.
Anyways, great job again and if you haven't already, check out some of Chris Fix's videos, he does a great job fading his paint!

    • @Brock_Landers
      @Brock_Landers 5 років тому

Advance Auto Parts sells a IAT adapter kit in their performance parts section that contains rubber grommets that you can either use a drill to adapt to your intake, or you can do something crazy and swap a D16Z6 intake manifold onto your head and it will relocate the IAT to the intake manifold, you would just have to lengthen your IAT plug to reach it. I'm glad that you only posted this a few days ago, because hopefully this comment helps you.

quick tip on that leaking oil pan, if you go to ace hardware and find a longer bolt with matching thread you can put an autozone seal on it and fix the leak from the stripped threads. Currently have that fix on my car, no leak.

you should do auctions. i buy 3 or 4 civics a year, fix the issues, clean them in and out, and do some of the subtle things everyone wants, and skip personal touches.
this car came out very nice. it will be running 26 years from now.

you can wet sand/polish that hard line out just so ya know. But for future reference do a rolled tape edge. It allows the spray to dust underneath the edge eliminating the hard line crated from a flat tape job.
