I have to admit it, I’m still rather new to confession. I was baptized a Catholic in 1965, but I wasn’t raised a Catholic. I went to various Protestant Churches growing up....mostly on my own since age 6. It wasn’t until I 17 0r 18 that I realized thee were different denominations...so that’s when I asked my mother what religion I was supposed to be, and she calming said “Roman Catholic, of course”. Long story, but recently in late 2017 I did my first confession. What a great thing. I’m still learning about confession....though I basically know. What a beautiful thing Jesus gave to us!

It doesn't matter which church you go to, but it is good to go to church and fellowship with others in the Body, and learn God's Word and worship Him. I prayed and asked God to guide me to the church He wanted me to go to. He led me to go to and Assemblies of God church, which I still go to since 1989.
I guess we have been too preoccupied with what we consider as the very big sins and didn't realise that we were piling some of ours up. It would be wonderful if more priests shared these sorts of teaching with their congregations as part of their sermons during Mass, in schools, with all the staff as well as the students, and in every possible place. So many people have only their basic knowledge to fall back on or have only heard about this beautiful Sacrament of Reconcilliation in a negative way. God bless you, Fr Mike, so very much. 🙏🕊

I wast recently testified to by another christian on the evils of the Catholic faith. He quoted many scriptures to prove his point. I felt I did not have enough answers to show this perception was incorrect. I never questioned a lot of what this person felt was wrong. while my faith was not shaken in the church, I did question why there is such a misconception of how we worship. I am very grateful to have found this information!
Thank you so much for this! I have not been back to confession since converting (2 years ago). I want to go and NEED to go but I have often wondered how I can make a truly good confession and how to do a good/thorough examination of conscience. I appreciate these tips so much! Hey @joseph jackson, know that I will pray for you to overcome this struggle. I have been in that struggle too, and it can seem unending. The evil one promises you everything, and once you fall, you feel all the guilt, and his accusations begin. Don't listen to the evil one! He only wants for you to despair. Know that, no matter how many times you sin, God is waiting for you with open arms in th Sacrament of Confession. Certainly, we have got to get out of our vices so that we do not sin in the same way over and over again, and this can be done only with His Grace. The concept of confession of sin to a priest is nowhere taught in Scripture. First, the New Testament does not teach that there are to be priests in the New Covenant. Instead, the New Testament teaches that all believers are priests. First Peter 2:5-9 describes believers as a “holy priesthood” and a “royal priesthood.” Revelation 1:6 and 5:10 both describe believers as “a kingdom of priests.” In the Old Covenant, the faithful had to approach God through the priests. The priests were mediators between the people and God. The priests offered sacrifices to God on behalf of the people. That is no longer necessary. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, we can now approach God’s throne with boldness (Hebrews 4:16). The temple veil tearing in two at Jesus’ death was symbolic of the dividing wall between God and humanity being destroyed. We can approach God directly, ourselves, without the use of a human mediator. Why? Because Jesus Christ is our great High Priest (Hebrews 4:14-15; 10:21) and the only mediator between us and God (1 Timothy 2:5). The New Testament teaches that there are to be elders (1 Timothy 3), deacons (1 Timothy 3), bishops (Titus 1:6-9), and pastors (Ephesians 4:11) - but not priests. When it comes to confession of sin, believers are told in 1 John 1:9 to confess their sins to God. God is faithful and just to forgive our sins as we confess them to Him. James 5:16 speaks of confessing our trespasses “to one another,” but this is not the same as confessing sins to a priest as the Roman Catholic Church teaches. Priests / church leaders are nowhere mentioned in the context of James 5:16. Further, James 5:16 does not link forgiveness of sins with the confession of sins “to one another.” The Roman Catholic Church bases their practice of confession to a priest primarily on Catholic tradition. Catholics do point to John 20:23, “If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” From this verse, Catholics claim that God gave the apostles the authority to forgive sins and that authority was passed on to the successors of the apostles, i.e., the bishops and priests of the Roman Catholic Church. There are several problems with this interpretation. (1) John 20:23 nowhere mentions confession of sin. (2) John 20:23 nowhere promises or even hints that apostolic authority of any kind would be passed on to the successors of the apostles. (3) The apostles never once in the New Testament acted as if they had the authority to forgive a person’s sin. Similarly, Catholics point to Matthew 16:19 and 18:18 (binding and loosing) as evidence for the Catholic Church’s authority to forgive sins. The same three above points apply equally to these Scriptures. The ability to forgive sins is God’s and His alone (Isaiah 43:25). The better understanding of John 20:23 is that the apostles were given the responsibility of declaring with utmost certainty the terms on which God would forgive sins. As the church was being founded, the apostles declared that those who believed the gospel were forgiven (Acts 16:31) and those who did not obey the gospel faced judgment (2 Thessalonians 1:8; 1 Peter 4:17). As the apostles proclaimed salvation in Christ (Acts 10:43) and exercised church discipline (1 Corinthians 5:4-5), they were wielding the authority Christ had given them. Again, the concept of confession of sin to a priest is nowhere taught in Scripture. We are to confess our sins to God (1 John 1:9). As New Covenant believers, we do not need mediators between us and God. We can go to God directly because of Jesus’ sacrifice for us. First Timothy 2:5 says, “For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”
Thank you father Mike for making it easier to go to confession. I have always dreaded when it’s time to go to confession. I know that I will receive the grace to be a better person . I want to grow in my trust in God.
Thanks for these videos; they are like a refreshing breeze. This one missed the best 'cheat sheet' of all, the Ten Commandments. The stone that the builders rejected has become the corner stone- we need to recover the Jewish roots of our faith.
Actually you need to get to the faith that actually IS rooted. You need to trust in the gospel, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

Going to confession. Always a relaxing experience, lol.

I am not a Catholic, I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and I’ve found this video to be so helpful! Not only to go an confess, but also to create the habit of making a conscious examination daily. I love this idea! I love how at the end you say that God wants us all to be saints. That’s what I’m striving for.
Oh! Do come to us when you can!

Please join the Catholic Church as soon as you can! Jesus Christ founded the Catholic Church. It is the one true and Universal Church.
I confess every day but as I return soon to the church with a view to being able to partake in the sacraments. I have said no to God lost in the way of sin for many years. My sins are so many my guilt so heavy but the past decade the lord Jesus has stilled loved me. Amazing grace.
Thank you for this. I am planning on going to confess next Sunday. For the first time since my first communion... You confirmed my thoughts. 🙏
Gabriele Gabriele Gabriele how it wentt??
This video popped up in auto-play at the very perfect moment. Thank you, Lord 🙏
Father Mike, thank you...what words of wisdom! I do love you and I am so grateful I've found you.
Why would you be thankful to have someone that is keeping you away from simple salvation in Jesus Christ be found ?
Faith alone is a heresy condemned by Jesus Himself (thus God), read your bible that we gave you but make sure it's before Luther's version in the 1500s

So, you asked your mother, instead of God? What if God wants you to go to a different church? That's what I did.
You did the right thing by becoming a Catholic thats what god would of wanted you to do. God bless
@@julienielsen3746 why would God want her to go to any other church other then the one true church
@@matthiasalexander9921 - There is one true Church, which is the body of Christ, and any who received Him as their Lord and Savior are saved and in the Body of Christ, and are the Church.
The Church is not just a building or a denomination, it's those who are in His Body, who are born again.
It doesn't matter which church you go to, but it is good to go to church and fellowship with others in the Body, and learn God's Word and worship Him.
I prayed and asked God to guide me to the church He wanted me to go to. He led me to go to and Assemblies of God church, which I still go to since 1989.

Moments when we say yes to God's blessings and moments when we say no. Very well said.
Going back to Catholic faith ty your an awesome teacher father
I guess we have been too preoccupied with what we consider as the very big sins and didn't realise that we were piling some of ours up. We compare what we consider as our small sins with what we feel are the sins of other people and got very comfortable being separated from God with our own sins. Thank you very much, Fr. Mike
I wish all priests would teach like this..
I just when to confession today. I am so happy God is good :-)
Thank you Father Mike! This was very helpful. I am 48 years old and this is an area that I have needed guidance lately.
Your an awesome Priest can't wait to become catholic
God bless Fr. Mike! The whole world should be watching your videos!
Yep!! I feel our blessed mother helps me so much to get closer to the Lord. I love Jesus and I feel He loves me and He is with me.
When I have our blessed mother with me, I have Jesus with me and I know Him better! Thank You Jesus! 🕊🌸😇❤️
I'm not Catholic, but I am Christian. I do know Catholics have so much good information and practices on things. Like this!
You are protestant, not Christian. The only Christian is Catholic.
Joe Munoz you are Catholic, not Christian. It appears we're at an impasse here.
K P The original, FIRST Christians were the Catholics. You are heretical, and ignorant..do your research, ive been around the block a few times.
Hi Joe,
I'm Catholic and all Catholics are Christians but not all Christians are Catholic. We were the first Christians but not the only ones. Protestants are also Christians because but we believe they do not have the fullness of the truth.
When a non catholic has an open mind to the Church, its a great thing. :)
Thank you for the great video, Father Mike!
I love all of the amazing catholic people in the comments here!
I am having confession and a rehearsal for my confirmation next Friday (I was supposed to do it last year when I was in 7th grade but it got canceled because of COVID ). I am really scared, I don’t know why. But this video encouraged and helped me a lot. Thanks for the video Fr. Mike!
Thank you so much, Father Mike!!!!!
Thank you Father Mike Smith, watched and listened, then found the litany of humility, prayed this, then went to confession. As an adult.
Thanks for this Fr. Mike!!! Going to confession tomorrow!!! I have the "Litany of Humility" taped inside my Bible cover actually... God bless this ministry!!!

Thank you. I find confession very powerful. It is a new beginning. Starting clean and bringing sins into the light. When undergoing sin, anxieties and tension I go to confession instead of medication. I sleep like a baby afterward.
Father Mike - you are an angel.
Thank you for your heart, wisdom, and humor.
Thanks Father Mike. Been struggling lately with confession and how to really be thorough.
wow. Thanks again Fr. Mike! God Bless.
Thank you for blessing us, Father. Grace, everywhere.
Bravo!
I use the 10 commandments however you have given me other areas to use...this is phenomenal! Thank you for sharing this valuable resource Padre! ;)
Wonderful. Thinking this way makes confession a true blessing.
Thank you Father Mike! This platform is amazing to help answer questions I am not sure to how to answer to non-catholics.
Thank you for your channel, Fr. Mike! JA
Thank you so much for this! I have not been back to confession since converting (2 years ago). I want to go and NEED to go but I have often wondered how I can make a truly good confession and how to do a good/thorough examination of conscience. I appreciate these tips so much! My first confession was so cathartic and as a convert, it made me understand why confession is so important. I am still learning though, and this has helped tremendously! Thanks again and God bless you and the work you do! 🙏
There's a good saying "anything worth doing is worth doing badly." 😉 Even a confession that isn't done well (but with the right attitude), is better than never going at all out of fear.
Listening to you on fasting, Keystone Penances, preparing for Confession, etc are all changing my thinking and my actions. Most of all, you are bringing me closer to God.
Father Mike, Thank you for these amazing, inspiring and guiding videos. I look forward to more of them... You are expanding your reach and help many! Thank you again!!!! God bless you!

I’m in RCIA and have been unsure what to say in my first communion. I’m scared of being judged by the priest and at the same time, afraid of taking too long over every little thing and boring him to tears. This kind of cuts to the chase to get to what is meaningful - thank you.
Heather Allingham Read the CCC, it defines what sins are in respect to ten commandments. Go to page 504, second edition. Start from there.
Thank You Fr. Mike Schmidt, you are such a smiling happy priest, it shows. I also watch Bishop Barren on IPAD .... He is knowable in the church teaching and am from Chicago as I am, but now live in Iowa. I definitely believe that when I receive the Holy Eucharist, I am receiving THE BODY & BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST! ! JESUS SAID SO AT THE LAST SUPPER! (Am 82 yrs old) so am old school (nuns 12 years of Catholic School in Chicago years ago!) In Times now, so many Church teaching does not really acknowledge THE EUCHARIST as we were taught SO SINCERELY Back in time. My Grandchildren are having children now, and I pray that as these children come into the Church that so many teachings are so SERIOUSLY TAUGHT< ESPECIALLY REGARDING THE SACRAMENTS!! AMEN

I was just like you .Temptation will come but you will overcome it,God bless You
Hi joseph, you can ask St Joseph to help you grow in chastity and purity of heart. :) Hope this helps
I highly suggest you check out Jason Evert's videos here on UA-cam, I am sure they will be of great use to you as they were for me. God bless you!

You are no as good as you should be- preach it father. God bless you
thank you Fr. Mike, a million times and over! i soo needed this.
Well you really and actually need Jesus Christ and him alone, specifically him alone for salvation.
Further, James 5:16 does not link forgiveness of sins with the confession of sins “to one another.”
The Roman Catholic Church bases their practice of confession to a priest primarily on Catholic tradition.

@@PaperTrailsAnimation we rely on more than just gospel we have tradition as well.
