As far as the computers connected to either modem are concerned, it's like they're connected by a very long serial cable once the modems return a CONNECT message. That's enough to immediately use programs like a terminal emulator for a BBS or unix login prompt, or for the computers to start talking a protocol like PPP (the part where the Windows dialup dialog would change to "Verifying user name and password...", which is also usually part of its duties), since internet traffic is a series of packets rather than a single stream of data.
Idk why but I think it's really cool how you can listen in on the modems talking to each other and setting up the connection. Definitely more interesting than just a loading bar or circle.
The “yippee” sound is establishing full duplex communication (the modems having the capability to talk to each other at the same time, over taking turns) if I’m not mistaken.
I think the order differs between modem and modem, but this is basically what they do. They go through a process to figure out who and what they are, what they can do, how they sound, etc.
i 100% did NOT expect this to blow up like it did
thanks for the support
They should have shaken hands
Hah motem handshake
BADUM TSS
“Modem dap”
they should have kissed
@@naffy3327 agreed
this is genuinely one of the best explanations of how dial-up works that I've ever seen, kudos
Agree 👍
True
Absolute, so simple. Thanks I will use to make examples.

Huh, I guess that puts those examples one layer lower on the protocol stack than I was thinking. Neat!
❤
you should do something similar for a failed handshake, although that would be a bit harder to explain.
Handshake into fist bump
"Hellooooo"
"I can't hear you"
"What was that"
"I can't - nevermind, cancel and try again"
"Can't hear you but i'm cancelling. Please try again, user"
I was planning on doing that
@@the98gooberso will you make it?
yes@@Strawberry_666
this is actually such a good explanation, no into, no yapping, just 30 seconds of easy to understand explanation
I love that they essentially celebrate by screaming at each other.
yea lol

Actually insanely useful as a visual aid to understand this. Thanks a ton!
The one with a spectrum plot this is based on is much more informative
this is legit funny yet educational
So you're telling me that sound from my childhood is basically two computers making out
Basically
pretty much
This is actually a perfect explanation of the handshake!
This is the cutest dial-up I’ve ever seen
"how do I sound" [HISSING FROM FUCKING HELL]
_good_
i love this animation so much, petition for modemy to be in tpot 2
The electric look through the peep hole then undo the chain latch before opening the door.
Hood classic.
I thought this was a meme but damn this is actually a damn good explanation. nice job man
Not pictured: "WHY DID YOU JUST PICK UP THE PHONE I'M ON THE COMPUTER?"
lol
Plotagon: “How do I sound?”
You've done well, really. That was quite interesting and indeed, educational.

I love how accurate it is
This is the best explanation of dial up modems. It’s kind of cute if you explain it like this..
now i understand how dialup works
There was a time I could recognize the speed a modem connected at just by ear.
sending this into the school IT teams channel
I was expecting a meme, but yeah this just straight up how dial-up works.
this is the most simplest and hardest explanation ever and yet i understanded it
this actually makes so much sense
Very informative, but please make them shake hands 😂❤
Holy shit this is actually interesting af! Thanks for this
this is amazing
Is this how techpriests in 40K communicate?
Oh wow that's actually amazing
this makes me happy
What a great video! and to think it would take this long to be released!
my favorite video
nice animating

The power of the modem (TPOT joke if nobody has got it)
Now I finally understood how it actually works
I was waiting for the handshake, but I'm still pleasantly surprised
i luv it!!!
This is better than school.
I support this video.
ty, super cool ^-^
Best explanation
great in nutshell
thanks for describing it

You've got v.90. Now do the rest of them: v.34, v.32bis, v.32, .... :)
I tried to like this two times
why am I fucking crying...
I think you must miss someone you haven't heard from since back then
that is nostalgia

Most amusing, thanks!
Are the stages _actually_ synchronised as shown?
It's a handshake, right

Yes
how is the speed negotiated?
still scares me
cool.
My mom herd this and thought I was setting up a Dial up connection
still curious tho, how can they measure a telephone line with just a beeping sound
😊
Cool
Concerning the description, i dont see any blue bar
Edit: the bar is so small its barely visible
instant fnaf 6 flashbacks
The sound of a waterlogged samsung
This is actually the data 🙃🙂0:25
It’s interesting how that they’re speaking in a language, we can’t understand
lol 1,900th like 😅
its called "handshake" you know
Nobody ever tells you that you can turn that sound off
I had to check the upload date 3 times cause my brain swore to me this was made in 2007

Why does this look like BFDI?
The animator is a osc content creator
@@Nocind Aw seriously?
@@user-pe7gf9rv4m indeed
I was hoping for more detail - like the answering modems constellation agreement and db shift if needed etc

Very nice underrated video
