Probably why you saw a few of them pull HARD due to tire blowouts. There's no other reason a tire double beadlocked onto the wheel would blow in sand. Sand is soft, engine parts are sharp. Combine them and you're bound to find the needle in the haystack that puts a big gouge in the face of the tire eventually lol.
Peter I know you're a competent builder and tuner, what would you say is the main reason for these failures? Are they knocked to death, or simply massive amount of boost and fuel grenading the engine? Maybe too many RPM for a long stroke truck engine?
Hard to say. I think in many cases these uphill runs is very hard on these engines and the power is to much for the internals. But it could be bad oil supply and bad tuned engines as well. It is not just the localy built engines that die. Many of the american dutweiler v6 and the big V8 that have the tuners coming in from Us have problems with their engines as well. But most of the passes the engine will survive. There is also very high prize money and big prestige to win so they really push the limits to win.

Honestly I don't really see bad tuned engines here. It's probably a combination of going up hill, high stress on the parts, and the fact that the turbos have to be pulling sand in so it's only a matter of time before the oil is compromised to the point it no longer lubricates the engine correctly.
Dieseltrallan if he would have steered it could have been a lot words and you're brake master cylinder is next to your engine and if that thing melts what it probably did you can't stop at all
