  • Platonic philosophy of "Idealism" for Humanities class (Dr. George Brooks)
Note: Several viewers have brought to my attention the audio problem of this only coming out of one speaker--my apologies, these videos were made by digital media students at the college and are of uneven quality. It is better to watch this with your internal computer speakers rather than under headphones or any stereo set-up. I will try to get this fixed when the pandemic is over and I can return to campus.

I've been listening to all "expert" instructors on youtube from Yale to whatever yet this instructor takes the effort to make Platonism comprehensive in terms of the STUDENT and speaks to the student-not at them. Thanks for the effort. I am so happy i finally get it.

_the only one who has the capacity to teach one platonism is one who is a platonist. there is more than meets the eye. that's the whole point_
_for one, platonism is about asking questions and awakening a desire in the one so hearing (if you understand) to resolve the matter_
_plato would recoil in sheer terror at seeing with his eyes how far his teachings have fallen, at the totally corrupt state of "universities at present" -- the modern sophists who borrow his good name at interest. stranger, give it back_

This lecture reignited my passion for philosophy 3 years ago and in the rare occasion I have meaningful dialogue with someone and share this passion, I use lessons from this lecture to introduce said person to the wonders of philosophy. I use a circle though, we know what a circle is, we can conceptualize a perfect circle but we are not capable of making a perfect circle. I may draw a circle on paper and while its tangible, physical and present, it is only a poor reflection of its ideal form... a non physical idea pulled from the ether., the logos. It was this very lecture, this very idea that shattered my perception of reality and truly changed me, I equate it to something like ego death and I have been devouring philosophical ideas ever since. I liked philosophy growing up and I was having deep philosophical thoughts at an early age but somewhere in my late teens I became a product of my environment, a shadow of my true self with a perpetual mask to conform, blend in and be accepted. Luckily I broke free or at least learned to remove the mask, and this lecture was a honestly a big part of it, maybe even the catalyst so thank you very much, truly. I'll leave you with the next two questions I pondered and still ponder.... is the good a reflection of God's ideals, or does God hold these ideals because they are good(Plato/Socrates). 7.) Is man just a blunder of God, or is God just a blunder of Man.( Nietzsche)

I never knew anything about philosophy but have recently discovered it and read Plato's The Republic and found it fascinating. I think some people are just geared to this way of thinking. I would be the one to notice someone was physically attractive and then occasionally think..... How do I know they are attractive? What is it that makes them attractive and someone else not attractive? I thought I was just weird.... until I discovered philosophy. Maybe still weird.... but at least now I know I'm not the only one 😂😂. Awesome video, I will be watching the rest of your series on Plato.

I love learning about this. This has me pondering....i would say there is no more "good" than there is "evil". I would say that 'justice' and 'truth' can not be seperate and individual bodies or forms. I am divided on...if Eros and Logos (and my understandings of them) are juxtapositions of each other, than 'beauty' can not be one individual body or form? Or is that exactly what it is. I can't accept that there can be pure 'good' without pure 'evil', but I can accept that everything is closer to or further from 'logos', which is not 'good'.
