  • Debussy's 'Clair de lune' is one of his most popular piano pieces and is also one of the most arranged. Stokowski was a great champion of Debussy and in his early years of recording with the Philadelphia Orchestra he made the first American 78s of the 'Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun,' the Three 'Nocturnes' and the 'Dances Sacred and Profane.' He also orchestrated 'The Engulfed Cathedral' and 'Evening in Granada.' His 1937 78rpm arrangement of 'Clair de lune' was a best-seller in its day and he re-recorded it in "Full Dimensional Stereo Sound" in 1957, the version heard here, with his own specially assembled recording orchestra. For the 'Capitol' LP liner notes, Stokowski wrote: "Debussy was outstanding among the impressionist composers of France and this is among his most sensitive poems in tone. Extremely delicate, it suggests by a few notes a whole world of mystery and nocturnal beauty." (From the EMI Classics 10CD box "Stokowski - The Maverick Conductor.")

A superb arrangement, extremely romantic. I actually like the version he did with the Philadelphia Orchestra that was originally intended for Fantasia but was released later as part of something else because the string playing is just incredible, even more luscious than here. Vibraphone? YES! Genius.
