From butchering deer at home I was taught that if you fill a 5 gallon bucket with water then put the zip lock bag into the water slowly up to the top without letting any water in it will push all of the air out of the bag. It works almost as good as vacuum sealing
Hi please can you tel me how long do you leave the c02 running into the chamber and is there a time to wait before removing the lid when you know the co2 has done what it’s suppose to do 🤔 as this must be done once and humanly
Yeah, the water trick works great. I used it for a science experiment. Slowly submerge the ziploc bag in water to push the air out of the bag, keeping the zipper above water, then carefully close the zipper. I also had to estimate the volume of the thing in the bag by submerging the sealed ziploc bag into a graduated container filled with a precise amount of water to see how much water was displaced by the bag.
Nitrogen is cheap too. Mammals perceive suffocation from buildup of CO2 not the absense of O2. Try using a pure N2 gas instead. Since it's not as heavy as Co2 and doesn't displace O2 by weight, you will have to use more N2.
I know this is old now, but CO2 has been proven to not distress the rats at all, in fact it actually is used as anesthetic to put animals under 2lbs to sleep for procedures. Once the rat is asleep, the rest is painless. Rats euthanized by increasing CO2 levels to 33% over 1 minute, then killed using high levels of CO2 while still in their home cage showed no signs of stress either by behavior or by subsequent blood tests for ACTH, glucose, and corticosterone which would be abnormal if the rats had experienced anything distressing.
@@woofmeow-MTLthank you for the info, could you share this study? A key point you mention is “in their home tank”. I would love to find a supplier that euthanizes them in their home tank because you can tell in a lot of these videos (not necessarily this one) that the rats are scared and trying to escape being locked into an unfamiliar place
Hi, I was wondering if you have an opinion on what might make the enclosure less frightening for the rats? In some videos they seem scared and want to escape. Maybe adding some toys and/or putting them in the enclosure before the slaughter day to play so they are expecting a nice time? How practical is this? A lot of places use paper towel.. do you think maybe putting their used bedding (or any bedding) in makes it feel less scary to them? Do you have experience using paper towels, or using their own used bedding (as opposed to this bedding looks dedicated to the co2 container)?

There was the shed cost, the insulation and finishing costs. The AC units last about 2-3 years so do the dehumidifers, so you are buying those ever so often. All the racks are home made so there is cost there. Not to mention bedding and food, ect. A lot goes into it.

Hi, I am looking to raise my own rats and I’m wondering if you know how soon after CO2 euthanasia can you actually feed the rat to your pet or should it be frozen first? If frozen, how long before feeding them to your pet?
You can feed it right away! The term for that is "pre-killed". I have done it before for a snake that was too scared of a live rat but couldnt pick up the scent well enough for a dethawed rat from the freezer. Hope that helps!
