I used this 2 portal technique in my latest run. One trick I used is to have a short name for my home portal (I used just . but you can actually leave the name empty and it will connect) this allows you to put up a portal and get out of dodge fast if you need to - yes your portal may get ttrashed after you leave but no big deal.

No need to keep defending the metals through portals setting. With even a minor amount of skill all having to haul metals back by boat does is make things take longer with no real additional danger.
