    I think you mean 5-6 atoms wide, not long, otherwise a strand of DNA would have almost no information in it at all, and we wouldn’t be able to see them at all at the macroscopic level. Every single base pair in the DNA strand required about two dozen atoms or so.
    In reality, the DNA strand is millions if not billions of base pairs long, depending on the organism.

    • @CloseIntel
      @CloseIntel  Рік тому +432

      The detergent helps to break open or "lyse" the cells so that the DNA gets released, and by adding salt it makes the DNA less soluble in water and helps to remove proteins that are bound to the DNA. Finally, cold alcohol solution will cause the DNA to precipitate for us to be able to see it.
      I plan on making a full video for this to explain it a bit better:)

  • @julianrivera2536
    @julianrivera2536 Рік тому +33

    For those of you wondering why the DNA is still visible if it’s so tiny, it’s because the DNA isn’t just DNA by itself, in between individual strands of DNA and full chromosomes, the DNA will wind around certain proteins and itself several times into coils and strands, with varying thicknesses, the more it winds up before becoming a chromosome. The process he does unwinds the chromosomes and the larger pieces of the DNA but it is still a lot of individual strands coil together, which is what we see under the microscope, we are not looking at individual strands of DNA unfortunately.

I'd love to see if microwaving it would get it to a high enough temperature to kill the bacteria.
