  • This is a video I made back in February 2022 and finally got around to uploading it. It was meant to get you thinking about what is safe when hydroplaning an airplane on a river or lake. It also has you consider the possibility or the reality of trying to recovery an airplane in a river or lake. The pictures of different airplanes are not of people I know but it could be anyone of us playing with our airplanes! By some amount of dumb luck it has not been me. Although I have had my share of screw ups in other ways with airplanes.

Hey thanks to all of you that commented in a positive way. I just took a 44709 check ride on 6/16 and the FAA has given me a green light to be a pilot again. They actually never pulled my license although the person from the FAA said that is normally done. You are normally asked to surrender it until you take the check ride according to him. I had to do the check ride in a tailwheel equipped aircraft so I borrowed a friends Super Cub. There was no one at the Portland FSDO area that could do the check ride and so they sent a guy from Fairbanks Alaska just for me! I really did not want to do it but in order to keep flying you have no choice. In the end the person from the FAA was a good guy and just wanted to make sure I understood safe decision making. As he said, he could see that I could fly from the videos but wanted to make sure I understood some fundamentals about safety and being a professional pilot (not bending metal was his wording). We talked about ADM, PAVE and how they could have applied that day in February. He was spot on when he said my complacency got me. I probably at this point won't say anymore on this accident other then it was an easy spot. I did not even consider having an accident there that day. It was at my dad's property in Monument. I made a multitude of mistakes. All of them contributing to the accident. If I had done a check of myself and given the consideration that every take off and every landing deserves it would not have happened.
If you are a pilot use PAVE or something to remind yourself to take every landing and every take off as serious as the most difficult place you would ever land. It could save your life and the life of your passenger. Okay back to work for me, that is the only way I will be back to flying!

      Hi Greg,
I'm glad you're doing ok after your mishap. I hope the cub isn't too badly damaged. Maybe you can look at it as your super cub will be a 2.0. Changing things you wanted to improve?
Mistakes help us learn... Some things just happen.
I always say if you're still on the right side of the dirt you're doing ok. Aircraft can be rebuilt, wounds, feelings and egos will heal.
Good luck making your cub beautiful again.
      Take care,
      Be safe.

Thanks for sharing. Like many others, I am a professional pilot and am always learning from your videos and enjoy hearing your insights and decision making process. I learned from your AK mishap and hope that maybe as time goes by you may change your mind and be willing to share more about your Feb mishap. Glad you’re fine though, and best of luck with your rebuild!

Once again thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience. It is your frank ability to assess and talk through your flying that makes your channel so worthwhile. Many other channels are like bubble gum; they’re easy and nice to watch, but you however deliver substantial substance in a 3 course meal that is worth digesting.
I understand your taking a break from your videos but I don’t like it!
      Thanks again

Glad you're ok, the sun still comes up tomorrow, as for being a professional pilot, well the commercial ones flying for their income may have fantastic safety records but the risks involved in the places you get in and out of are so much higher than those flying at registered airports. If u hang round in a barbers shop for long enough sooner or later you'll get a haircut.. nobody else could fly where u fly with a better record

You probably aren’t thrilled about explaining it, but I hope you consider sharing the event that happened in Feb. I think I can speak for a lot of us when I say a detailed breakdown of your incident and what went wrong would be very educational for all of us, especially us newer guys. You have a great way of teaching through your videos. Thanks for what you do and as always, I look forward to seeing your posts.

Great title! I was told recently my runway, 1ID9, is officially the shortest, ON THE CHARTS, in the country, but it's JFK/LAX compared to your personal strip, and maybe and one or two others, but yours is tops in being the most "messed up". First time viewers here were probably waiting for you to taxi for takeoff, THAT can't be the sight picture on takeoff!

I am building a pacer right now , if I had to pay someone it would be too expensive. I enjoy working on plans so it’s not a job for me.

One of my airline buddies gave me "Big Rocks Long Props" shortly after it came out, 2006 or so? Although I was intrigued well before the Cowboy's, or Patey's social media prominence, I couldn't ju$tify & didn't have room in the hangar for a 3rd airplane at the time anyways. Now? I do everything, you cats can do & more, with a foot launch paramotor rig. I owns a small fleet of them. I know most fixed wing G/A guys think ultralights and paragliders in general are "dangerous" and flown by "idiots", but applying the same ADM that keeps us safe in the fixed wing world, to the ultralight decision process yields the same result, acceptable margins of safety. If you can't afford a Carbon Cub, you tire of the regulatory side of it, or if you just want an aircraft that can do all of this and still fit in the trunk of a sedan for 1/15th of the investment, give it some study. Sorry to hear about your incident Greg. Thanks for some great video over the years.
