The Use of Color in Persona 4 [P4G Analysis]

  • My last video debunking Matpat's Teddie video was just a prelude. After much deliberation, I have decided the first part of my Persona 4 Golden Analysis series is The point of color, or The Use of Color in Persona 4. Color theory is often dismissed or seen as looking where there is nothing, in P4 and P4G 's case it was very intentional. New videos will be out soon, so I hope you enjoy, comment and generally support so I can get monetized. Thanks!

This is the first video to drop but it isn't the "first segment" in the series by any means - as you may be able to tell from it's wording. I just thought this one would be good to start with. Please comment your thoughts below, and if you've studied art/color on your own please feel free to add your own additional interpretations! I'm still away from my computer and recovering from the surgery, but I swear I'm trying my best and will be working again asap.

For Naoto, Blue additionally can represent intelligence or wisdom or thought. It’s why blue is the color of the mind in games like magic the gathering. Naoto always holds onto her blue, since she will always be the most intelligent party member, but her new outfit keeps it underneath her white shirt, showing that she isn’t so desperate to define herself by her intelligence and detective identity.

Thanks, yeah color theory is weird bc it can easily go into some cracked out overanalysis that clearly wasn't the intent of the creator, but disregarding it by default is a discredit to goo mindful art and artists who really do put thought into everything they do. I thought some of the interviews with soejima and his work process did well to lend credibility to what I was saying which while making sense wasn't too reachy imo

Thanks, and yeah! I think it's the culmination of a lot of these more subtle, almost subconscious elements that lend this sort of polished professional feeling to the persona games. Like they're elaborate structures and each small cog keeps it together. One of my favorite things are the narrative bits like the black covering Kanji yellow, or Chie losing her green. Thanks hatch!

So here's my Theory for Yu's Chosen Colors which is Simple but Unique in its own way.
So the most used Outfit is his Uniform (Grey &/or White) which is somewhat Generically used for these Protagonists but behind this, shows his Connection to People who use these same Colors, regardless of it's in a Great or Least Extent.
Now this could be said for the others, but Yu shows a more deeper Connection becuz these are the Colors he uses more than other Characters...

Great work, Hiding! This turned out even better than I expected.
Regarding the yellow vibe of P4 and how it’s often connected to sun/optimism, there is a quote of another game series that fits in so well.
In Kingdom Hearts there is a quote “The closer you get to the light, the greater your shadow becomes” which perfectly ties in with P4. In order to shine the brightest each character have to work through their insecurities, fears, trauma and general “dark personality”.
Since the sun exposes so much it’s often easier to stay in your comfort zone but P4 almost pushes you into the bright colours and in the end it always pays off

Wow, I noticed how the characters primary colours changed in the epilogue but I didn't even think about the deeper meaning the change could hold. Really nice dive into this subject.
I'm no expert on clour theory but I feel there could be meaning in Ryotaro Dojima carrying a dark black jacket on his shoulder but never wearing it as Adachi does at least to my knowledge.
Or maybe they just didn't want to make another model of him wearing it who knows haha. (he wears it in the persona 4 visualive stage play but that's probs not important)

I don't know if im reading to much into this but I'd like to take a look at Teddie. When we first meet him he's blue yellow and red. While we could go into these meanings I have another theory. They're the primary colors making up every other color. Teddie is a shadow, a mix of everyone's thoughts and feelings so it makes since for him to be a mix of everything. His human form? A white top making up most of his sprite but still having yellow hair, blue eyes, and a red flower on his chest. White making up a majority of his character. He's pure to the new world he's exploring and being around so many new things.

The hit Chie joke was fire, love the little laugh on that too, great comedic timing on the editing. I find this stuff really interesting when the creators have stated they specifically went in with intent on making it a focus. One that I love is Kung Fu Panda, in the commentary they talk about red = power, gold/orange = heroism, and green = wisdom, and they use that in one scene to show power throughout a jail and every corridor of guards that get defeated, the red torches go out. Really neat stuff.

really appreciate you trying topics like this out. I feel like a lot of aspects of game design get over looked because people don't feel giving credit to these more abstract evaluations compare to things like mechanics with video games, but I've always felt that it's just a box game critics/analysts put themselves into because they're not confident in the medium as a whole yet. So cheers, really enjoy this and really looking forward to more p4 videos because I adore this game.

It amazes me how much effort they put in the character designs to express their personality starting with the clothes and hairstyles to the color. I have noticed too that Teddie and Marie have the same colors. Someone already pointed below that they are primary colors, maybe it´s because they don´t know their true self. Yu would be interesting to analyze too, his pattern is black but specially grey/silver and white. It could be related to the blank state as MC but grey represents too maturity, stability, neutral, etc. White is made when you put colors from the rainbow together pretty fitting to him I think, plus represents purity and is related to gods.
About the yellow color, I like how it fits the game: happiness, the sun (very important for Japanese culture) and disease (everybody gangsta until the fog becomes yellow in the town).

I love the way that color placement interacts with the designs for each of the characters - for instance, how different characters wear their uniforms and how their primary colors are incorporated into their designs.
Yu is a fairly blank slate, but his design says a lot about the game's central themes and what he (and the player as protagonist) stand for; Yu's flared collar and open shirt represent that willingness to show your true colors, to not hide them under the deep, mysterious blacks of the Yasogami High School uniform. Whilst the pure white of his clothes reflects both his purity and the literal blank canvas he represents as a self-insert, his primary color is actually grey - which is shared with Dojima (that Dojima connection itself is pretty special too, since Dojima repeatedly emphasizes how much Yu reminds him of himself, and how that lets him open up.) It also represents a coolness or calmness - white/grey hair representing wisdom in a lot of mythology as well, which fits both their roles well.
You covered a lot of what I love about Yosuke's design and its incorporation of orange, but there's some hidden story to its incorporation that I love in particular. For one, it isn't plastered over his uniform like some, more proud characters (Chie, Yukiko, ect), rather it's incorporated in more subtle ways - this emphasizes his conformity and willingness to compromise on his appearance more than other characters, which fits his insecurities well. Even the way he pops his collar is like an awkward invitation just begging people to notice his uniqueness, though nothing so radical as to attract too much attention. The color itself is also very inconsistent throughout all of his outfits, and can actually range very wide on the color spectrum between deeper reds and brighter yellows; this fits his character tremendously well, as Yosuke is usually conflicted between two parallel emotions - both cheerfulness and passionate anger, which (at least, he'd like to believe) he hides behind a layer of social conformity.
Last character color scheme I want to lavishly compliment is Nanako's. Like... Her dress is literally a gradient going from an innocent and loving pink, to a blood red. That's such a great design considering her incorporation into the story, and it adds a layer to the tension that the player is really meant to feel throughout the game in terms of Nanako's safety. (Side-note: another pretty valid way to interpret Nanako's color scheme is that it's actually a reflection on how Dojima sees Nanako, since he is the one to buy her clothes. This could add a double meaning to the presence of blood red, as it also represents the part of Nanako that upsets Dojima the most - her resemblance to her deceased mother.)
Frankly, when it comes to complimenting or analyzing Persona 4's characters and themeing, I struggle to stop myself. Good thing there's cool UA-camrs like you here to keep stuff short and concise with these cool ass videos 👍I hope you're recovering well!

    • @cyanariesdw04
      @cyanariesdw04 2 роки тому +8

I think it’s also important to mention that, although Narukami doesn’t have much of a defined personality in the game, his grays and overall neutral color palette is a good representation of his insecurities in the anime. He feels like without his friends near him, he’s nearly worthless and they’re the ones who give him strength, a feeling that can be connected to gray’s emptiness and characterless/dullness.

    • @TheMightyNovac
      @TheMightyNovac 2 роки тому +5

@@cyanariesdw04 the Persona 4 anime does a great job of reinterpreting elements from the source material to convert them into a really functional standalone product that, honestly, I can recommend about as much as the original game if you're not into JRPGs.

i only get recommended this video today so i dont care if you see this, buuuut
    I loved the analysis.
watching the videos i have come up with own interpretations of certain characters, in particular:
Naotos originally dark blue outfit can be interpreted as a sort of tainted blue, therefore the interpretation of truth again, which makes sense because she is the core of the investigation team as detective, but in a sort of tainted way, as her way to the truth is clouded by the mystery of the case and threated to fail as she has fallen into the tv herself.
same for adachi, the richer, darker colors compared to dojima could indicate the difference between the good cop and a corrupted cop, all the while he holds on to his innocence and that he "didnt do anything", represented by the white shirt underneath.
It was fun putting my head into it, thanks for the video :)

Might be kinda late but I loved the vid. But, and this could just be me, I wish ya wish ya woulda talked about Yu Narukami. but before I get into that I just want to put down my thoughts that I came up with for Dojima. Starting with his coat, I was really sad that you didn't mention it at all but I'm kinda thinking of it as he's holding his black jacket or mystery over his shoulder, looming over him. But for the most part he's wearing white and that red tie you mentioned, showing that he is upfront with the player and compassionate, but those are just my thoughts. Now for Yu, I think his normal outfit is pretty self explanatory? he wears alot of black and white for purity and mystery, but what I want to go into is his final outfit which I though was white and blue striped t-shirt but I think is actually just blue for the most part. My thought on this is that when you beat the game and grasp the truth that Yu has essentially gotten rid of the mystery surrounding himself and inside him and his personality, and thus is now pure as symbolized with white and content with blue, due to him fitting in and finding his place in Inaba.
Sorry for the ramble but that's my thoughts. Anyway I just want ya to know your video was great and got me to kinda research colors and rewatch the final portion due to you not including Yu so maybe it was intentional but still thank you for your content. I realize as well that you cover the "optional" arcana's and all that but I was kinda wondering about just bringing Rise to your attention. I get that alot of the parties members stories and morals are pretty simple and blunt, well not to say that the game isn't upfront about most the morals and lessons which I appreciate, cause it is annoying when a story does dance around there ideas instead of bluntly I suppose attacking the player with the thoughts and themes the game is trying to convey. Anyway getting back to Rise, I find her story pretty heartfelt and somewhat relatable as it is somewhat hard to come up with a personalities which is all of you, so she goes and assumes arc a types of herself, and I'm kinda losing the point as I type but her story is just simply and bluntly wholesome.
Oh and omega spoilers I suppose, for a vid on Adachi if you ever do one since he's already got a some vids on him. I think it would be cool and maybe even true to bring up that the main cast all have flaws but if they didn't overcome them they would have led worst lives but not be in as bad a state of Adachi. I think I'm losing the plot again but the idea is that Adachi suffers from all the flaws that the cast overcomes? maybe? For the final time I loved the vid and I hope to hear your thoughts on the other characters and themes of Persona 4.

  • @adamsmoberly
    @adamsmoberly Рік тому +4

I think that many persona players think the yellow is to show off the more fun and lighthearted parts of the game, but miss the point completely.
Thought the game Murder happens, even with the more tame moments, but the color actually, in my opinion is alluding to Carl Jung’s Ego, Superego, and Id.
So in basic terms I’m going to use the town (which relates to what I’m going to say) in those definitions. The Ego is basically the fact it’s a peaceful small town with that good old values, the normal, on the surface depiction of Inaba. Then you have the Id, which like the shadow versions of the investigation team, is the murders, the people having “personas” disguise their inner parts of themselves (Naoto being a girl, Kanji maybe not being a tough guy and in my opinion straight (I think it’s Pansexual though), and the other’s struggles within), and the threat of the killer. Then the superego is the investigation team saving people and being heroes for the town, as well as giving them strength (the arcanas and supplies and such). It also plays into the duality that the game has as well, the shadows and the personas, the light vibes and the darker vibes underneath, and the big thing, the normal town at the beginning and the fog (as well as the shadow world) becoming one. The fact that there is a darker part in the game, even if it’s more lighthearted, makes me think Yellow is used as a deflection of those parts of the game. Even in the title track (the original one) talks about finding one true self, which I think is a reference of the unconscious mind realizing more about itself.
So basically, that yellow is used for the lighthearted parts of the game, but also to throw off the dark side of the shadow world and the killings. Which to me is similar to my small hometown, which has an underbelly of unsavory things.
And honestly, I actually find it creepier that the game doesn’t have that grimmer vibe that most mystery stories would (it’s like a cozy murder mystery vibe), which is kind of like fear of dolls, like their faces are happy, but they seems more dark…like that.

The subtleties that define the feel of the game, even if you don’t know the meanings of color art like me it still defines the character subconsciously. In your head it just fits you can look at someone and have a good idea who they are. This just gives a deeper appreciation of the game for me

I'm just glad UA-cam kept recommending this to me! Here's a list of each color representing the main cast, their motives, struggles, and leitmotif:
    Yu Narukami/Soji Seta: Gray/White
It ties to him as the main character, his connection to the player, and the eventual traitor Tohru Adachi(even sharing the same English VA). Gray or white aren't interconnected to color whatsoever, but it can be used as a metaphor for light, and Adachi's color black to darkness; yin and yang in particular, even balance.
    Yosuke Hanamura: Orange
Orange can be a color representing passion, or energy; Yosuke is quite swift and optimistic akin to yellow, the neighboring color. Always there to help those in need, while also quite enthusiastic. Orange as well as yellow are colors in relation to the shop he works at, and the link to the Shadow World, Junes; that includes sunflowers akin to his last name(hana meaning flower in Japanese).
    Chie Satonaka: Green
In the previous mainline installment, green was more of an omen than anything else(hence why it was used to represent the Dark Hour and Tartarus in the majority of P3); Persona 4 and 5 subverted this thought by having green tie with more useful and energetic characters like with Chie and Futaba. Green next to blue(which is discussed more in Naoto's entry) are reliant on wisdom. It makes sense with Chie in the beginning of P4, since she's devoted to help Yukiko out and insists on saving her while she's trapped in the Shadow World(Futaba on the other hand serves as P5's navigator and support figure to the Phantom Thieves, also giving green another purpose than just in Persona 4).
    Yukiko Amagi: Red
Red may have connections to rage, but it also alludes to power in addition to fire. The latter makes sense with Yukiko, as she uses Agi based spells automatically equipped to her Persona throughout, the former shared plenty of connections to her dungeon as Yukiko's shadow believed to be the most dominant out of her entire family, hence the royal palace theme(thus carried over to Persona 5 also having a castle dungeon in the beginning of the game with Kamoshida's Palace, except with lust added). She usually sports red like during the spring and autumn sessions of Yasogami High, or in the winter after school.
    Kanji Tatsumi: Purple/Violet
Kanji's main color purple was often misinterpreted as a sign of homosexuality(also matching with his struggle manifested into a bathhouse inspired dungeon), but it can also allude to royality hence why his arcana is the Emperor like what one comment to this video pointed out, and purple is one of the few colors to electricity and lightning(aside from yellow, blue, and white), his Personas are exclusive users to Zio magic, as mentioned earlier.
    Rise Kujiwara: Pink/Magenta
Pink is more in line with a feminine color, likely used for female idols in the music industry, especially in Japan. Pink is also a sign of sexuality and love; which is why it parallels Rise's arcana The Lovers. Her dungeon is based on a stripclub, thus relating to Rise's struggle where many believed she is a sex symbol instead of a normal person like everyone else.
    Teddie: Yellow
Yellow can also be interpreted as a color of anxiety or stress, but also happiness and positivity. Teddie's Junes mascot uniform mixes yellow with red, and blue for his fur. In human form, Teddie's hair is yellow as well. He associates to the TV World, since the dimension is to the brim with Shadows; as he too used to be malevolent like the others aside from Marie, but vow to fight for good, then solve the murder cases and fog with the friends he cared for.
    Naoto Shirogane: Blue
Even though blue shares introspection to characters in Persona with wisdom, akin to green, it is also a sign for masculinity. Naoto wanted to be accepted as a woman, even though she usually guises as a man, while also having the surname of 'Detective Prince'. She's timid for revealing the truth, but when realizing her shadow is the same just like her, Naoto decides to accept the identity she kept veiled for so long; considering the allusion to trans and how pale blue and pink(the signature colors to men and women) are used to represent transexuality, the former color felt perfect for garnering Naoto's realization and acceptance.

I think Dojima's gray represents his age and baggage. He's exhausted and unhappy a lot of the time to the point of neglecting his daughter, which saddens them both. Since his wife died, life has lost its luster for Dojima. That his tie is still vibrant red represents the his still aching pain and anger culminating in his passion for the case. On the other hand, it could also represent his (potential for) renewed vibrancy for life that the protagonist provides him from their social link
