I'm a Mary Karr fan. HAven't read the Art of Memoir yet, but have watched a bunch of interviews where she talks about her memoirs. (I read The LIars Club). Body of Work sounds interesting. I'm in the process of editing my memoir now. May Sarton sounds interesting as well - have not heard of her before. I've started Sylvia Plath's journals but need to finish it. I loved Virginia Woolf's diaries.

Hi Katie, I have been journaling for years and right now I'm switching things up and started doing "morning pages", which I'm sure you've heard of, by Julia Cameron's, The Artist's Way. I'm really enjoying writing in the mornings. I'm currently making my way through the May Sarton book you mentioned and the Journal of Henry David Thoreau. Being an introvert and nature lover, I'm very drawn to read from both of these authors.
I very much enjoy your videos!

Yes! I’ve heard of The Artist’s Way and morning pages. I’ve never read the book even though it’s been recommended to me dozens of times! Writing in the mornings with a cup of coffee is such a joy!
I hope you are enjoying the May Sarton! Im saving all my introverted nature books for the summer! I can’t wait! Thank you so much for watching! 💛

I started reading it (I have a giant combo book) and I think I'm overwhelmed by the desire to be perfect. I must write three full pages, not stop moving my pencil, do it every day, etc. I'm wondering how to tap into it again (because I think it is a powerful practice), but make it work for me. Rebel tendency (Gretchen Rubin).

What a great idea for a video, so many great books!
I recently picked up the dutch translation of Forbidden notebook, your review definitely had something to do with that, it sounds right up my alley.

I was just thinking about Annihilation the other day and that I wanted to reread it. I didn't read the trilogy, and I agree that this one works as a standalone. So happy to see someone calling out The Art of Memoir--so good!

What a fantastic theme to explore, I love this! You gave us quite the list, definitely adding a few to my TBR!
The books that come to mind for me within this theme are the Parable series by Octavia Butler. If you’re interested in dystopian settings at all, the format of the series is in journal form and I found it really effective.

Thank you for watching, Reba! 💛 This is a great recommendation! I’ve not read the series, but it’s always been on my list. Thank you!

    such an awesome list!
I can’t wait to start the story of a new name :)
Also The Lost Children Archive and The Diary of Frida Kahlo look really great.
The Victoria and Albert museum has an online collection of some of Kahlo’s clothes- that is really cool. She made a lot of her own jewelry, and some of the clothing has flecks of paint on it-I think it’s also a really interesting piece of documentation.

I’m so jealous you get to expletive Story of a New Name for the first time!!
Ooo I’m going to look that up! Thank you!

The Lost Children Archive is an amazing book! One of my favorites from a few years ago. Have you read Red Comet, a biography of Plath. It is really long, but it is very good.

I have not read Red Comet. I’ve seen it around and have been interested even though it’s very long. Glad you also enjoyed The Lost Children Archive, it’s definitely a top book for me!

    Hi Katie,
What a fantastic video!! Such an interesting subject and a great selection of recommendations. I'm looking forward to your future thoughts on Annihilation. Sounds pretty good and a possible addition to my ever increasing tbr ☺️. Frida Kahlo and Sylvia Plath are both two fascinating women who I would enjoy learning more about so thanks for the recommendation. I'm really hoping to get to the Forbidden Notebook soon but as yet have not been able to get hold of a copy.
Have you heard of a book called The Artists Way? It's not a journal but a book about healing and self expression through the use of journaling. The author, Julia Cameron encourages writing three pages of whatever springs into the mind down onto paper each morning. ( As well as other things to try).I did this for a while and is really quite eye opening when reading back at a later date.
I'm so pleased to hear that you had found your sketches from your twenties. Drawing /art is such a great way of self expression. As you say, one little sketch can speak so many words. I guess that's what the arts all have in common, their storytelling.
Anyway, thanks again for another great video. Have a really wonderful weekend 🥰

Hi Zoe! Thank you! Really hoping to do a re-read of Annihilation this month! I have heard of The Artists Way, tons of people have recommended it to me and I’ve just never picked it up. I’ve tried morning pages and did enjoy that process! I’m one of those people who will journal a bit put the journal down and throughout the day whenever I have a thought just pick it back up so I sort of journal all day haha! Also, what you said about art and storytelling is so lovely and perfect! Thank you as always for your thoughtful words and encouragement! I hope you have a fantastic day!💛🥰

      Hi Katie,
Thank you for you lovely reply 🥰 I had a feeling that you may well have come across The Artists Way at some point. It's one that's been around for quite some time, now. I thought I'd give it a mention, though. The morning pages are perhaps not ideal long term, especially for busy peeps who have to rush to work etc but short term, I found it quite an interesting experience.
Thank you again for such a great video. You picked a topic that can easily be discussed at great length and with art in the mix you've got my attention for hours. 😃🥰

Oh wow, read Ruth Ozeki! All of her books are well better than amazing and Time Being is her best (although that's like picking a favourite child).
This was an interesting video and not a theme I often think about, but it's clearly a great tool for authors to be introspective or to demonstrate growth or change.

Watching this while eating lunch and am actually about to leave for a nature journaling class :) I'm interested in all of these, but Annihilation sounds super interesting. There is a bookstore near me and the owner just got her Master's. I know she wrote her dissertation on it so it must be highly recommended by her too if she wanted to spend that much time in it. Oh, I own Body Work but need to get to it!

That sounds like so much fun and also something I would love to do! I would love to read a dissertation on Annihilation! I could talk about that book for hours. Have fun at your class today! 💛

@@Katies.ShelfLife Maybe if I read it, I could get ahold of the dissertation and we could chat about the book on Voxer plus anything crazy the paper reveals.
The nature journaling was so so good! I guess my thoughts on art is that I'm drawn to it as in framed art I pick up traveling covering my walls and art in the form of design. Like looking at a space and making it feel calming through the colors, textures, placement of items, etc. but I honestly know nothing about art. To me it is a form of play that is calming to engage in, reminds me of the childhood art classes that I took for pleasure, but not anything that I'm good at in the least.
I noticed during the class that my friend who led it had an art mindset and while I plan to start nature journaling as a hobby, I am more of a words person. That doesn't mean I'll exclude art from my journal, but just realized how carefully observing something in nature opens up connections and memories almost instantly. The flow was unreal and I think I will take a more writing heavy approach to nature journaling. I'm super excited to get started!

Glad you had an amazing time! I think looking at art, appreciating art, and having it bring you joy is perfect! You don’t need to know anything to appreciate it and there is something really beautiful in that. Expressing myself through words has always been a challenge, which is why art was so vital during my childhood. I’m always amazed at people who love words and can craft perfect sentences or express themselves through language in just the right way. Truly a gift!

Oh also I feel like writing in nature makes you use so many senses you may not use while sitting at a desk.
