"Their Eyes Were Watching God" is suuuuuuuuuuch a good book! I read it in high school and it's especially fun listening to an audio while reading along cuz it's written in a southern black dialect. It really puts you in the setting and it's so interesting
ishiguro's nocturnes is one of the best short story collections ive read i think you'll really like them !! it's sad in a quiet and painful way which is very up your alley
I think American Dirt could make for a really interesting video given the controversy around it - it's not the best book, but it certainly opened up a conversation about diversity in publishing and the importance of own-voices storytelling (also love seeing the amount of Latine literature you've picked up recently - cannot recommend One Hundred Years of Solitude enough!)
Please give Joyce a chance! People always start with Ulysses and get intimidated, but The Dubliners and Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man are both MUCH more readable and worth the time. Plus, once you get used to his style, Ulysses doesn’t seem quite so daunting (sidebar: it is still daunting though)
The Guernsey literary and potato peel pie society is one of my favourite books! its got a slightly different plot and vibe than the film and its descriptions and characterisations of people is really interesting, especially when she is on Guernsey. I definitely recommend you read it, even if you end up not liking it that much :)
We have always lived in the castle is a MUST READ!! It’s one of the best books I’ve read in terms of description, visuals and creating a distinct environment that you as the reader feel like you’re standing in its remarkable.
I listened to the "Pickwick Papers" as a BBC radio drama here on UA-cam, and it was fantastic. They had a bunch of sound effects, music, and many voice actors which made the entire experience very immersive. The humor and tone came through brilliantly. I would absolutely recommend you to give it a try too.
you absolutely need to read The Hate You Give ASAP!! does a great job of providing critical perspective The Kite Runner will also def destroy you and rip your heart out
i dont think the hate u give will really provide any new perspective, it's quite ya (very important for its time and target demographic but I think from the discussions of summer 2020 and since it's fallen behind other works)
The Dictionary of Lost Words should absolutely be a priority. I bought it on a whim and I absolutely devoured it. It was one of the first books I read and enjoyed outside my fantasy comfort genre!
Recs from your tbr to prioritise: 1. The count of Monte Christo-I listened to it as a bedtime audiobook thinking I'd fall asleep to it every night... I listened to every minute over a month and it was so enjoyable, highly recommend both the book and the format. 2. We've always lived in the castle by Shirley Jackson Enjoy!
my recommendations: -the discomfort of evening - weird and fucked up and the author is also a poet so the writing is beautiful. -anne of green gables - i think sometimes people have a misconception of this book that it's a bit sickly sweet but i promise it's not.
Build your house around my body is one of the most captivating books I have read this year . Got me out of a reading slump. I am sure you will love it !! Also did I hear a new HS book recommendation video is on the way ? So excited for that !!
I can highly recommend Detransition, Baby!! It's such an interesting look at identity, family, parenthood, society, discrimination and the trans community but also privilege. For example, and not too spoil too much, while race doesn't play a huge part in the novel there's an interesting passage about the ignorance of the white trans woman protagonist to the oppression of BIPOC people. She thinks as a trans woman, there is no one more discriminated than her, which she is called out on by another protagonist who is half Chinese but cis gender and Peters handles it beautifully. She shows that even those who are minorities and face discrimination can still discriminate others or turn a blind eye.
Uuuh you've definitly got to read The Dictionary of Lost Words soon. It's probably my favorite read of the year. So beautifully written and informative
Watching this video took me back to 2017, when I was just starting my essentialism journey. I gave away, gifted, donated, or sold a lot of the books I had purchased as a coping mechanism. After graduating, I realized that reading WAS essential for me and the person I do want to be. Despite my renewed love of reading, I have come to know that I do not like stocking up on books if I could not actually get to them immediately. So, I keep a list of all the books I do want to read - in digital, audio, or physical. I want to read them, savor them, and, then, give them to people who would love to have them. I only keep what I can absolutely read and get to because looking at them collecting dust makes me feel like I'm stunting their full potential (v Marie Kondo I guess). Anyway, thank you for being my constant companion in my online bookhunts. I love taking your recommendations and scouring online second hand shops for them. Much love and many blessingds!
One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest is my favorite book of all time. I read it for a high school essay, and that’s been YEARS ago, and I have only read 1 book that has come close to topping it. The movie is really good, too. We Have Always Lived in the Castle was my fav of 2021, and it’s perfect for the Autumn season!
snowflower and the secret fan is one of my all time favorites. It's the story of a girl in old china who is getting her feet binded and it's the story of that painfull experience weaved in with her growing up and her friendship that is growing with this other girl. It's kinda of a coming of age story but you also learn about this process which is so touching.
I've read a shortened version of "Le Comte de Monte-Cristo" for school and I really loved it, it was like four years ago so I don't remember everything. Would love a video where you talked about the books you read - or were supposed to read but didn't - for your university degree. I have been contemplating about different courses, and English Literature/Language is definitely an interest!
I’d actually like to see your take on Ready Player One. It’s one of those books that everyone loves and I literally DESPISED almost the entire time I was reading it and I can’t reconcile that.
You should definitely read 'Do Not Say We Have Nothing'! I loved that book so much and desperately wanted to hug so many of the characters. The narrator's voice/vibe (idk how to describe it) is kind of similar to the one in Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah (if you haven't read this, I recommend this one too).
I love how the majority of the books on your TBR were also books you took out from your box in the beginning of 22' and still remains '' I need to get around to reading this''. That is by far THE MOST RELATABLE thing I've seen from you!. I feel much better now Thank you. At least, '' Jack has a pile like mine too'' can be a consolation.😅😂😊
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is my all time favourite book and I've never seen it mentioned anywhere! It's very sad and has very dark content but it's a beautiful story with beautiful writing. I re-read it like every year.
3:02 After this I have this overwhelming urge to read it. Most importantly I do not have big book fear so… I guess I know what I’m buying and reading this month!
It's extremely good, but you might want to read The Crying Of Lot 49 first, its only 130 pages in comparison to GR's 800 or so. You might want to buy a readers companion book too, it's called "the Ulysses of the second half of the 20th century" for a reason lol
It's such a relief to see someone else with a huge TBR pile. I'm in the process of finally weeding out books I'm no longer interested in, but I can't seem to stop the trips to barnes and noble 🤣
I'd love to hear you talk more about translated fiction! I also really enjoyed your video where you read Croation authors and it made realize that I haven't really read anything by authors from my own country except for the stuff they made me read in school, which is really sad lol
the glass palace is so good! i read by chance after it was in an apartment i was renting and i had no idea what to expect, but it was so interesting and gave such a good perspective
i really recommend the Paper Palace it's got me out of a reading slump! i really enjoyed it but i should tell you, for some reason nobody talks about the fact that it has a large section on SA and they just describe it as a cute beach read, which part of it is, but just a trigger warning for anyone thinking about reading it
I love seeing everyone's unread tbr videos! makes me realise that the 50 on mine is nothing! 😂 also you've reminded me how much I miss reading Murakami
The "Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" slander ... I can't! The movie got nowhere near the depth of the book and I love that it's written in an epistolary style.
Agreed!! I've read that book a few times and love it every time. Though I HATED the movie!!!! The actors weren't right for the characters and just... no.

Yeah The Sympathiser is great, there’s a lot of talk about representation in a western influenced society and how that sort of impacts our ideals and morals. Read it last year, and it is one of my favourite books to this day.
I picked up Still Life expecting absolutely nothing in particular. 100 pages in, I fell in love with the characters and all of their little quirks, reading about their lives was just fascinating. I read it slow just so I got to spend more time with the characters, when I finished reading I found myself wishing there were 1000 more pages just so I could escape into their whimsical little lives for a bit longer. Deff recommend!
Loved, loved, loved the video! So many books that I want to get from those piles, because of your speaking about them in the past. Continue shining, Jacky!
Please read Gone with the wind, it is wonderful, yes it is a big book but so worth it. Also feeling better about my to be read list, thank you lol. Love your book reviews.
'When you call my name' is probably one of my favorite books of the year! It somehow was everything I hoped for and nothing like I expected at the same time! So much love for that one! I also read 'the view was exhausting' and kinda hated it... Great title tho
A Christmas Carol is one of my favourite books (no, studying it didn't actually ruin my enjoyment of it), but have I read any of Dickens's other books? No.
CU alum here! I got so excited seeing you wearing the sweater, I thought at first we were going to get a vlog of you there. Love your videos! They got me back into reading after a long hiatus.
Do NOT read The Maidens… I thought I would love it- and I did until the end… the ending made me feel physically ill… I love ya too much to put you through that Jack- toss it. I still gave it like a 3 stars because I loved the first part and I thought I would enjoy it so much. I did and it’s hard for a book/story to shock me but alas… the ending- horrible.
Before watching this video I was feeling bad about having 3 other books I haven't finished whilst starting another new one. After watching your video, I'm cured!
I loved My Dark Vanessa. So frustrating, so difficult and so nuanced. I didn’t want to read something romanticizing abuse but wow. It was so well done. My stomach kept turning whenever Stain or whatever said or did some creepy shit to her. It was such a tragic book but so necessary. Also really enjoyed Careless, gives you an insight into the foster care system and I think all the characters are really well drawn out. There are some heavy topics but I think they are handled really well by the author. I've
Jack, you really need to watch Katie from Books and Things if you don't already. She's made me do a 180 degree on Charles Dickens, something that my MA or even BBC adaptations never did.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and The Grapes of Wrath are two of my favourite classics ever, they felt so impactful and life altering to me when I read them in highschool. Also I read Down and Out in Paris and London last year and loved it way more than I thought I would! George Orwell's insight and writing are just incredible
You make me feel really good about my ten book physical TBR 😭😅 AND The count of Monte cristo is AMAZING!! I truly hadn’t read a book for pleasure in two years. It got me out of the biggest reading slump in my life. I know it seems like a lot because it’s so long, but it was so entertaining and beautifully written that I found myself sitting down and reading two hundred pages in one sitting
Glad you mentioned about snobbish uni’s, my first try at a literature course made me drop out because the university was so snobby it made me depressed. Now studying it again at a much chiller uni and enjoying it

update just spilled half a plate of scrambled egg onto my sofa.. going well so far
Yeah The Sympathiser is great, there’s a lot of talk about representation in a western influenced society and how that sort of impacts our ideals and morals. Read it last year, and it is one of my favourite books to this day.
Those book piles are extremely satisfying. The stress though of my current TBR taking up like half my shelf 😵💫
Was I watching your tik toks when the notification that you posted came up? Yes.
26:35.. Family of Liars is actually the prequel to We Were Liars.. which I need to reread.
Excited to read them both ❤️❤️
I feel better for my TBR now. :D How about a read along for Don Quijote? Or the count of monte cristo! That would be fun.
“my enemy … Charles Dickens” 😂
Loved, loved, loved the video! So many books that I want to get from those piles, because of your speaking about them in the past. Continue shining, Jacky!
Please read Gone with the wind, it is wonderful, yes it is a big book but so worth it. Also feeling better about my to be read list, thank you lol.
Love your book reviews.
Thank you Jack for validating my need for pretty book covers
This is the video I needed Jack. I identify with this 🤣😭
'When you call my name' is probably one of my favorite books of the year! It somehow was everything I hoped for and nothing like I expected at the same time! So much love for that one!
I also read 'the view was exhausting' and kinda hated it... Great title tho
Just putting down my vote for Grapes of Wrath, I freaking love that book ☺️
The way he pulled out those two books at 12:20 was the most satisfying thing I’ve ever seen
A Christmas Carol is one of my favourite books (no, studying it didn't actually ruin my enjoyment of it), but have I read any of Dickens's other books? No.
“Let me just be a disappointment in peace!” is my new motto.
Lol literally every book on my unread pile “I was so convinced I was going to read this when I bought it…. But here we are….”
CU alum here! I got so excited seeing you wearing the sweater, I thought at first we were going to get a vlog of you there. Love your videos! They got me back into reading after a long hiatus.
"let's start by acknowledging the elephant in the room"
the hoodie was absolutely not the elephant in the room jack
i really enjoyed the power! it’s not perfect but it’s certainly very thought provoking and easy to get through because of how fast paced the plot is
Video Idea: Reading the 5 tbr books at the BOTTOM of my list.
good idea!
this was the kind of unhinged commentary i needed today. thank you jack
The Power is a fantastic book, ignore whoever is giving it bad reviews lol
Yesssss I loved it too!
Jack, you are spoiling us with so many videos!! 🥹
Now I’m afraid🥲
the little paris bookshop is such a great book and it has been one of my favorites for yearss, you should definitely read it imo 🥰
Before watching this video I was feeling bad about having 3 other books I haven't finished whilst starting another new one. After watching your video, I'm cured!
don’t cry for me is so wonderful! one of my favorite book of the month books i’ve gotten.
"Meditation and Mindfulness...I don't want help *throws book*
The most relatable thing I've seen all day
Extremely loud and incredibly close is SO SO SO GOOD and innovative and inventive and has a lot of great themes
I've
The writing in the sympathizer is just *chefs kiss*
pls can you do an lgbtq+ books video
i absolutely LOVE haroun and the sea of stories. Read it in grade six and fell in love.
George Orwell's insight and writing are just incredible
omg i remember reading snow flower and the secret fan sophomore year in high school but i don't think i've seen anyone talk about it before
You make me feel really good about my ten book physical TBR 😭😅
AND
The count of Monte cristo is AMAZING!! I truly hadn’t read a book for pleasure in two years. It got me out of the biggest reading slump in my life. I know it seems like a lot because it’s so long, but it was so entertaining and beautifully written that I found myself sitting down and reading two hundred pages in one sitting
How about doing a video where you finish all the books you've started? Love these type of videos.
Glad you mentioned about snobbish uni’s, my first try at a literature course made me drop out because the university was so snobby it made me depressed. Now studying it again at a much chiller uni and enjoying it
