"Everyone is a pilot". Considering how bad some people are at driving cars, I certainly do not want everyone to fly this. Jokes aside I really like this big drone of yours.
Was thinking the same thing. Most people can barely drive in a safe manner. I wouldn't want some yahoo with more money than brain cells to get hold of something like this. Law enforcement and first responders, absolutely. If this hit the open market, airports would have way bigger problems than the occasional idiot with a DJI Mavic flying in controlled airspace.
As a pilot, I wouldn't want some of the people that went through flight school being pilots. Thankfully, most that I had concerns about gave up.

This is the flying car we've all been waiting for in the year 2000. And yes, it has arrived. Bravo.
This is not a flying car. It is a personal aircraft. A flying car would be able to drive on the road as well as fly. This is revolutionary for being electric and (supposedly) easier to fly than a helicopter. But it is still a personal VTOL aircraft, not a car. This cannot do anything a helicopter could not do. Still very cool looking. Also, with a flight time of 20 minutes and a top speed of 102 km/hr, it's got a maximum range somewhere around 20 miles on a charge. If you live more than 10 miles from work you won't be commuting in this without a charging station at work. And even with a charging station at work, you're out of luck if your commute is more than 20 miles. Again, very cool, but very limited as well.
@@danielschechter8130 I'm sure this thing will be WAY easier to fly than a helicopter. It will be like flying your average consumer drone. Also I know at least one thing this vehicle can do which a helicopter can't: flying that close to the trees, power lines and other objects

I have been in a helicopter flying just over treetop level. I don't know what makes you think a helicopter can't do that. As for FAA rules, I don't know what the rules are for helicopters vs. the Jetson. I don't even know if that's permitted yet for consumer use. You're probably right that it's easier to fly than a helicopter. But if people are flying it without more than 5 minutes' training, there will be fatal accidents. People are people, and without the extensive training that pilots get, there will be crashes. And there's no way they'll allow it to be flown low over occupied homes. It may be small enough to land on a suburban lawn, but it won't be allowed. You'll still have to keep it at a heliport.
Looks unstable to fly with a strong breeze or crosswind, like it'll be easily flipped over, and crashed. Loss of power means it drops like a thrown rock, no autorotation to counteract a fraction of the force of falling.
We already have too many bad drivers on the road. Imagine if they have to think in 4 dimensions (3D and time). Because they aren't constrained to the roads which usually limit their actions, they'll be lots of accidents if the drivers aren't thoroughly trained and certified to fly this vehicle. Even with autopilot flying, someone needs to be able to fly it in the event of an emergency.

This is revolutionary, imagine how much time I can save by taking off right from under the bridge near my cardboard box, to my shift at McDonald's 5 miles away without being stuck in pedestrian traffic, then flying to the Amazon fulfillment center 20 miles away for the night shift, and at last back to my bridge with some delicious ground pigeon meat prepared by my Jetson.

but I do love the idea of zipping around between places in one of these things. maybe in the far future we'll all have little zippers like this one in the garage. of course by then we'll have super advanced AI that keeps us from hitting trees

He was way too low for my comfort. Perhaps it was over concern about engine failure and if the craft goes down he is low enough to survive the fall, maybe?

It has lidar and a ton of sensors. It self corrects. Plus those props are way bigger than a small quad.
Exactly why I don't see these tings litter the sky anytime soon. FAA will require at least a Private Pilot's License.

My goodness, agreed. This is not the way to get the public to purchase or endorse this vehicle. I can't wait for the day when these types of vehicles are commonplace but not if this is how people are taught to fly them.

lets talk about the fact that it is a low flying craft and would be illegal to fly over houses for safety, then there is the fact that it only just a giant over sized quad copter and the supreme court has ruled that if the police use a quad copter to fly over your property it's considered a invasion of your privacy, so you can bet your ass that they would consider this thing the same as well. Third just try to fly this thing into a city with out filing a flight plan and see what happens to you if you like federal jails be my guest. Fourth back to low flying you better know where every power line and telephone line is on your flight path or your dead once you hit one. Up here to get your pilot licence for a single engine fixed wing air craft you have to do a simulated engine failure in flight. What happens is as your flying the engine is turned off in flight and you have to glide for a set distance then you fire the engine back on. this thing if one motor fails for what ever reason your now a rock. and lastly it's only going to take one or two yahoos flying into power lines or crashing and dying before the government steps in. It's a nice gimmick but thats all it is and probably will ever be, its in the same vein as the flying cars ( and yes there is some out there google it ) nice in theory but poor in real world practicality

Man. I had dreams of inventing and flying my own personal craft as a little kid. Those were great dreams. The closest I ever came was when I got into hang-gliding. But this flying machine looks a lot more like the one I flew while asleep as a child. The technology didn’t exist in the 60’s but I somehow knew it could be possible some day. Bravo man!

Most of us will have to settle for paramotors. Having my own landing pad is not in my forseeable future!

@SierraLima, Don’t say, “Umm…” as if you’re informing me of something I don’t know, kid. I never knew a single person who had a helicopter. Too expensive and way too many rules. I invented and built my first hang glider when I was 16 years old. I crashed it, sprained both my legs and saved up for a real hang glider. It was about a serious need to fly with no money to do it. I eventually did fly my own glider up and down the coast. Finally achieved a childhood dream. Sorry if that sounds stupid to you.

I think maybe they should add a barrier or some protection to prevent the blade coming into contact with anything or anyone.... Awesome machine 👍

That was beautiful. Personally, I'm getting tired of the videos where the vehicle just hovers around the field and then lands. It's satisfying to see you actually make an honest-to-god trip with it. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.
Is it really honest? Pay attention to how they cut the video, and the strange paths they choose to fly over terrain - not saying the thing doesn't fly, but they're obviously not honest about its limitations

I applaud your engineering and achievement. This video is also inspirational. But where in the world would anyone be allowed to fly a manned aircraft below tree line, underneath powerlines?
edit: Did a little research into my own and following comments. Jetson One in the US would be classified as an ultralight in the US (EU as well). I am not sure how the lack of 5 gallon or smaller fuel tank factors into the FAA Part 103 FARs (I guess technically zero is smaller than 5 so...). To pilot this in US, therefore, does not require any kind of pilot certificate. As some have pointed out, flying close to trees and below powerlines in class G airspace (uncontrolled, sparsely populated, etc.) is not prohibited. The FARs focus on risk to OTHER'S person and property. Countries in the EU (Sweden being one) have similar rules (with exceptions). Therefore, it seems that away from any people or property, this flight is not necessarily busting regs like I thought at first blush.
I think I've had nightmares of flying a helicopter at low altitude near power lines in the past as this made be very nervous too!
I think it's for safety. Sounds silly but seriously: low altitude means less possibility of injuries in case of any malfunctions. With increasing amount of flight hours and test data, the confidence will rise as well and therefore the flying altitude. It needs time to build up this confidence and make sure everything is tested as good as possible.
@@Jogibaer_universe I think that might be true with this, but it's the opposite philosophy when it comes to traditional aircraft. In that case, altitude is your friend.
@@Jogibaer_universe Also, it's not flying in other plane/helicopter flightpaths. And since he doesn't seem to have any 2 way radio, an airport tower can't contact him to alert him of approaching aircraft.

Yes, there is a lot to recommend cheap reliable safe drone type craft for commuting to work or to get to the shops etc. I think such craft should have their rotors mounted higher than the one in this video to aid stability, and the propellers should be inside shroud's to make them much safer.!!!😀💕

I saw a version of this at an Aerotech facility I work for on occasion that seemed sooo awesome. Its still in development and trial phases, but they are making a good number of them

Presumably, in NY, there would be some kind of restrictions if/when these times come. Countless FAA restrictions such as permissible air space travel, maximum height during flight, and then the endless state and city restrictions (licensing and training requirements, fees, taxes, authorized hours of flight, etc.) to follow… No doubt a great idea to minimize congestion and open the door to the future, simplifying life for the everyday commuter. But factor in the way people drive (and crash) now -on the ground- and it would only be matter of time before people start falling from the sky…

The thing you don't get from the video is how insanely loud it is. Even with ear plugs and head phones the noise is an issue. It just cannot be made to be quiet when you try to levitate on props. Then the range is so poor that you just can't really go anywhere let alone go there and then come back. Plus what you can't help but do is go rip through the trees but the problem is the first time you tag a tree or power line you will most likely die. With a Flat Top paramotor you can do 51mph, fly up to 280 miles or more, fly over 18,000 ft without even tuning it and the noise level is much much much lower. Plus the whole thing breaks down the size of a backpack so you can take it with you anywhere you go. On top of that it's about $13,000 instead of $250,000. The Flat Top paramotor allows you to go ANYWHERE and then come back again and gas up with just normal pump gas. You can literally land at a gas station. Flying a quadcopter is a cool toy but there are some serious downsides where flying a Flat Top paramotor if your engine dies it doesn't matter, you simply glide down. If your motor dies at 500 ft you can still glide about 1 mile before you land. Any issue with a quadcopter and you instantly crash hard. Since the funnest place to fly is right near the ground just like in the video the backup parachute won't do much good. Plus with a Flat Top paramotor you can catch thermals or ridge lift and stay up half a day with your engine off in complete and total silence. A Flat Top paramotor is ridiculously safe. If you eliminate the 1 single person who flew face first into the ground trying to do acro right next to the ground there have been a total of zero deaths in all of history. It's ridiculously safe. Flying a quadcopter? Umm...

Fit a third set of lift motors over the center of gravity but make them directional so that you get the lift and then when you're at you're desired altitude flip them up to 90⁰ forward for more speed.
It is not built optimally for performance flying, but for being simple
A buddy of mine owns a Cirrus aircraft that actually has a parachute. I wonder is incorporating a chute into a craft like this would be feasible? If this thing goes down like a DJI, it would suck having issues at 1,500 feet. Very cool video and concept though!
Check their website, ballistic parachute is listed as a feature!
The other craft also has a chute.... Opener's Black Fly... theirs flies higher, faster and longer.... also much more expensive,
Travis, do you trust anything you see on that website? Do you see anywhere on this thing that has a parachute? And, how long do you believe this thing can really fly? I calculate 2-4 minutes, based on the battery, the weight, and the efficiency of those kinds of rotors. Someone in the comments said he called the company, and that they told him it's 3 minutes with an adult male pilot. Personally, I don't trust anything I see on that website. The math doesn't add up. And, again, where in the world is this parachute they say it has? With a craft like this, you'd want a parachute up on top. You don't want a parachute underneath, needing to deploy it through those spinning rotors. Yet, do you see a large parachute on top? Could you even get the thing to an altitude for a parachute to even work, before running out of battery charge?

Ah, importantly, you need to be at an altitude where you have sufficient time for: determining you are in an unrecoverable situation, deciding to use the emergency parachute, firing it off, having the canopy deploy fully to take the weight of the craft, and to slow to a descent rate that would be survivable. And you could've dropped 1000 feet in that time. So there will be a general altitude you'd need to be at or above for a BPS to save your ass, and I'm not sure this thing would normally be travelling at said altitude...

I could immediately tell this was not the first flight. Flying much too low for my taste (powerlines, tree tops), but if you are very familiar with your flight path (and it's remote) then you can push the limits a bit more. Probably the best example flight of EVTOL I've seen.
I'm afraid I'd have to much fun on the commute and wind up missing work more often than not 😀

there's an old story about interviewing for a truck driver position. each was asked how close he could get to a cliff's edge without driving off. the last guy who responded that he'd stay as far away from the cliff as possible ended up being the only one who got the job.
There are some things in life, that make you glad to have been on this planet to see come to fruition, for me this is DEFINITELY one of those moments!

As an airplane pilot this is super cool but also I was a little nervous the entire time watching it fly so close to trees. Someone who isn’t as skilled as this pilot could easily misjudge a turn or climb rate and find themselves hitting a tree flying that low.

Also, if they are not flying following approved right of ways, they could find themselves shot at over someone's property.

what if there was a standard minimum and maximum height for these things while traveling that could be overpowered if necessary
@@RomanMines64 as far as I know that’s how it is with the typical drones these days. There is a maximum altitude and then different areas will also have different laws governing the airspace. I imagine if this takes off and goes public there would end up being a website or app that lets you plan a route that didn’t bust airspace or break any laws. In drones it’s usually self-enforced but if someone sees you busting rules and reports it the FAA investigates

@@sonacphotos ? It is flying higher than the trees in the video. If you fall from that distance, you can get very seriously injured or die. Also powerlines might be a problem. This also doesnt really have a "soft" area like cars, which bends when you crash so all the impact goes directly into your body. This actually is very dangerous x)

My Uncle literally fell from the height of six feet last week and shattered his T12 vertebra. Very luckily he was not paralyzed. Also I really doubt that machine is going to be able to auto rotate like a helicopter. Most likely if you have a rotor failure you are going to dive towards that side directly into the ground. And as was explained in another post, there is zero impact protection offered by this machine. His feet are inches from the front of the unit. I think you misjudge the fragility of the human body. Once again, lots of fun but lots of risk. And I would absolutely try it:)

We started out with horses which men have been doing for many centuries. Then cars came along and that has only been recent for nearly two centuries. Imagine in the next century or two, everybody would be able to afford flying cars as the next form of transportation! We went from horses to cars, and now we are at the birth of flying cars!
You should probably considr some shock mounted landing gear btw, its really easy to damage your back with a solid landing gear so something to consider for the commercial release
You could also put smaller system into the seat suitable for pilot weight without adding heavy landing gear suited for entire Jetson weight.
@@menotyou1234 That would compromise internal space, and it could also feel a bit weird well flying. Shocks can actually be very light weight, so i dont think it would add a lot of weight as landing gear.
they can't have any more weight. it already can't fly long that's why they have to always edit so heavily.

Air shocks from the rear of a modern full suspension MTB would work, but you have to remember that these things are built as light as possible. Any extra chassis or weight is a killer for range/battery life.
Needless to say, this type of transportation is not really going to work efficiently until someone cracks the power storage to weight conundrum.
Lightweight, small, high capacity batteries just don't exist yet. Whoever invents them will be a billionaire overnight.
As an A&P I look forward to this being fully consumer available.....The overtime alone makes me drool.

People can't even drive automobiles without crashing, could you imagine the chaos of a major city with hundreds of these bumble bees flying around? Air Rage would become a thing, and instead of street racing with modified cars, could you imagine! I absolutely love it! I would love to see some performance flying in this thing, how fast can it go, how high, how hard can it bank a high speed turn, etc. Very cool and hope to see it continue development!
Aircraft and helicopters crash much less than cars. With a bit of automation and training this thing could be very safe.

@@Republic3D only because for the vast majority of the time in built up areas they are in controlled airspace and have their movement controlled by someone else watching transponders and maintaining separation.
Now increase the number of aircraft and reduce the experience of the pilots and you'll see an increase in the number of collisions.

Current aviation laws wouldn't allow mass commuting like this. Controlling a vehicle on a 3d axis is completely different to driving a car. You would need helicopter and aviation law training before even setting foot in one.

Some of it clearly was. The view towards the front … but maybe this was a rear camera with the drone animation pasted on top, so not completely fake.
@@merefield2585 Thats view from 360 camera on a stick (visible on other footage), software of camera removes the stick automatically, that's all.

I noticed they cut every time he flew near the power lines. A couple questions - 1 - What about obstacle avoidance of such dangerous hazards as power lines. 2 - Will there be a rotor protection?

I doubt many will ever commute with this and that is probably a good thing. It does look like one hell of a recreational vehicle.
I am not an expert, but i feel there is common characteristic to all flying devices how much energy does it need: 1. per time of being in air. 2. per distance of traveling straight line. 3. per distance of random direction traveling.
I think that planes are optimized to use minimum energy for straight line travel. their energy and impulse is accumulated in forward speed. it is gradually wasted by drag (horizontal by incoming air, and vertical (by wings to support weight), and engines just need to refill that waste).
In this device i do not see any energy accumulation, nor using vertical air resistance to reduce force needed to support weight. it is (its engines are, without any help) supporting all of its weight all the time, as soon as engines are not running it falls down at full speed. most of its energy is used on weight supporting.
it looks like that this device is more energy inefficient in straight line, compared to airplane.
Its advantage is to easily change its direction.
there could be an option of extending wings. when you are about to fly long distance, you are able, if you want, to extend wings in air, to make you ultra efficient flying machine. as soon as long travel is over, for parking and for flying around single area, you are able to close wings.
extension of wings could be fine grained, gradual, controlled automatically by ai, to make you ultra efficient.
helicopters dont have wings ,but im thinking about what hapens if you lose power? an airplane glides ,a hellicopter can autorotate but this ? =D
@Geo Gruia I think you are right. Helicopters and gyrocopter, also like planes, have energy accumulated, but in main rotor.
this device has energy accumulated in its rotors, also, but it is negligible due to small radius and low rotor weight.

I've looked at sourcing materials to design and make something like this since 2015. I know there are a ton of people here joking about the cost and how "unrelatable it is". But you can fly this in nearly any areas outside of heavily populated areas in the US under FAR guidlines. And being under 100k knowing how much sourcing components will cost you is damn impressive.
im thinking about making one as well, starting next year, maybe we can work together?

I imagine this could be implemented in search and rescue. The open cockpit low elevation view. Easily deployable and maneuverable in rugged terrain. The possibilities seem endless for the future of this remarkable vehicle.
it has to be very specific area of search because I'd imagine the range on this (or flight duration for that matter) to be very limited.

Range increase greatly if you skip the pilot .
