  • A fractal journey by Gerry Mantha. Exit, circle, and reenter an evolving alien fractal landscape in high definition using a smooth 60 frame per second frame rate.
    Over 20,000 individual fractal images were created using the Mandelbulb 3D fractal generator, then later stitched
    together to form the animation.
    It took 3 computers working simultaneously for 6 weeks to
    calculate all the fractal images.
    All fractal images used in this animation were generated by Mandelbulb 3D
    mandelbulb.com/2014/mandelbulb...
    Special thanks to L.A Curry (Lenord) for sharing his fractal parameters from which much of this animation was based.

    • @GerryMantha
      @GerryMantha  6 років тому +53

      I really wanted to go further. Who knows what I might have found! Unfortunately near the end, each frame was taking more than half an hour to generate because of the complexity and magnification. That means more than 24 hours to create one single second of video! I just got another computer working that was gifted to me, so I might start inside and just go deeper and deeper by keeping that computer running a couple months. We'll see!

    Is the "kalidescoping" effect due to the attempt to represent 2-dimensional math in 3 dimensions?

    • @GerryMantha
      @GerryMantha  6 років тому +13

      It is not "2-dimensional math". In the case of "2D" rendered escape-time fractals such as the basic flat Mandelbrot set, the complex number (C) consists of 2 components, the real part plus the imaginary part: (x + yi). Thus in our classic iterative Z -> Z^n + C, the C represents this imaginary/real pairing. When mapping this set to an image, the real and imaginary parts equate to the relative horizontal and vertical coordinates of each pixel being sampled. Either the point lies within the set, or it doesn't. The number of iterations taken with the Z^n + C applied to the sample point before it "escapes" (if it does) is assigned a color for an interesting design.
      The formulas used to create this fractal are also escape-time, but differ in that the complex number C is replaced by hypercomplex numbers, in this case a triplex number representing the 3 coordinates (x, y, and z) in Cartesian space. The kaleidoscopic effect at some points is actually due to a 4th dimension being added - temporal. The formula parameters are changing with time, and semi-self similar areas are joining or coming apart and transforming as time passes.
      When it comes to fractals, it's not really valid to think of them as being 2D or 3D or 4D etc. mathematical objects or sets. Fractal geometry isn't your classic Euclidean geometry. When we paint a picture of any fractal set, the visual "dimensional" appearance is simply one of interpretation of how we got there. Fractal mathematics is commonly applied to describing and predicting the state of "multi-dimensional" systems (over time). Think Brownian motion, pendulums, magnetic fields, or the classic 3+ orbital gravitational object problem where conventional differential (derivative) mathematics and classical geometry don't work well. And that's just a small sample. Fractals just incidentally can make pretty pictures too! ;-)

      Gerry Mantha so what your saying is that the structures are disappearing because they are going into 4d? Bc to 2nd creatures we would look to be appearing and disappearing if we put our finger infront of it and take our finger out. This is because they can’t see up or down. Could that same thing be applied for this? Since we can actually see in 4d

      @@GerryMantha After reading that .... I wish I could post a picture of the guy in the movie Scanners ... the moment when his head blew up! haha :D
      As a complete newbie I look and play with fractals from a purely artistic perspective (random happy events picking formulas by sticking a pin in them!, you could say) as I have absolutely no idea on the mathematics behind it, and never will.
      Cue .. the Scanners moment. :)
      I needed to comment that not only the shapes but the color, lighting and ambient fog on this looked simply spectacular.

      Sadly is a HUGE file, about ~6 Gigs. At the time I mistakenly thought UA-cam would create a higher bit rate image if it were fed a higher bit rate image. I was wrong of course. Anyway, UA-cam's compression has improved in recent years, especially with the 60fps support. As long as you download at full 1080p/60fps you shouldn't have visible compression artifacts.
