Lol! 5-10 years ago I thought my 2 year old hedge trimmer was done, but I decided to spray it with WD40 just for shits and giggles before I threw it out, and voila, it worked like new! Now I spray it every time I’m done and it has never failed me👍
I had the exact problem you described, did what you suggested and it worked perfectly! Once I got it going I added a little oil to the blades and all is well. Thanks so much for the wonderfully simple solution.
I just watched and did this to a Kawasaki hedge trimmer and this worked but my issue was rust and lack of maintenance also sprayed with PB Blaster and let it soak a bit like 5 minutes. I'll be checking the blades are properly tightened and free of movement. Thanks again cheers and much love from Houston,Texas.
Thank you, I thought I bought a new hedge trimmer. Someone returned it to the store used and stuck. I tried your method and got it to work again. Much appreciated.
Thank you!!! I just broke out my brand new HL 94 K today that I bought this week and the blades wouldn’t move. I was low key freaking out. I’m pretty sure now this is what I’m dealing with… hopefully
I have an ECHO and I spray mine down with WD-40 and run it for 15 seconds or so when I'm done with it for the day. Never had a problem. BTW, if you don't have several cans of WD-40 sitting around, you shouldn't be watching this channel.
I have no complaints with it for many purposes, I know it will remove grease from hands , likely tree sap as well . But if anything is going to sit for some time it's best to coat it with something else. Engine oil is one of the best . WD-40 will cause rust and has very little lubrication value
I buy WD40 by the gallon and keep it in a WD40 sprayer. I keep it nearby and hit the blades while I am trimming. It reduces the buildup of sap/pitch. And as already stated I spray the blades down and run the trimmer before storing it. Never had an issue!
If you use them heavy, look at the case for the gearing mechanism, you may see bluing. That part overheats like crazy with those things depending on use, always keep them lubricated.
my Stihl hedge trimmer has been on vacation for over 5 years won't move sprayed carb cleaner & then WD40 still nothing , i'll try spreading the blades like you showed plus move lube
Hello Steve. Have a self propelled Troy Built TB 280. Muffler fell off. Must have rattled loose on my brother. But behind the muffler is a heat shield and another piece that bolts in with muffler bolts. The other part has a rod of some sort that goes up into the lawn mower. Does that rod hook up to something above the muffler under the to cover? If you know what I am even saying can you do a video on that un named part. Don't know what it's called.
Steve, G-day eh, Maybe April can help me out. My Stihl backpack br550 is blowing carbon all over the back of it. I'm pretty sure that I seen you do a video on the solution. Would you refresh my memory. I can't find the video. Thank you. 😁🇺🇲👍
Hi Steve, just thought to ask this question, I have a Stihl HL95 hedge trimmer which for some reason the pinion gear that has the 2 bearings in the middle of the shaft with a drive gear at either end, which drives the cam gear for the Blades is actually working its way out of the casing, so hence the smaller drive gear isn't engaging on the cam, have you ever come across this issue before and if so how can I fix this?
After cutting and before putting away my hedge trimmer, I always clean the blades with compressed air and after that I spray the knives. I never had problems so far.
I bought a used one of these(RYOBI) and it had this issue(must be i guess) i thought the motor was bogging down/seizing but i put the attachment on another motor unit and it still did it, SLOWS down to a stall, i am yet to get to it but the spray i was using didn't clear it for long i think it's going to need the blades removed, scraped and cleaned then reassemble. there was no other videos covering the issue when i initially checked.
I do not have hedges or a hedge trimmer but thanks for the video. I do have a question for you. I have been going around and circles over buying premix gas. Another youtuber you know has done videos on a premix that they do not recommend, due to it sometimes having a bad mix ratio. I got two quarts of Husqvarna premix with my third Husqvarna saw I bought last fall. I used that fuel up and about had a heart attack when I saw the cost is 29.99a quart. Do you have a premix go to or do you mix your own ? Your friend John from Michigan, the troll under the bridge
I just took my trimmer apart to sharpen the blades (yea, I hadn't realized you could sharpen them without taking them apart) but when I tried to put them back together I wasn't sure where the washers went. I foolishly took it apart without checking to see how it was put together in the first place and now I'm confused about how the blades work. Do they simply slide back and forth even when the screws are tightened down? Do the washers go under the screw heads or under the nuts? Washers generally go under nuts but since I wasn't paying attention, I'm a little befuddled. It doesn't seem logical that the washers would go between the blades but I'm concerned that the blades might jam up if I put it back together incorrectly. Any help?
I had hedge an electric hedge clipper (120V) with the blades really gummed up. I used oven cleaner to clean it up. Rinse with the garden hose, air dry and oil. Just be careful to keep the cleaner off the motor. After that I use 3-in-one oil to lube each blade and shaft. Works well and stays clean.
Excellent idea. Mine has been jamming every couple of minutes. I do spray it with WD40 after each use. Needs a cleanup probably, and sharpening wouldn't hurt.
So question, I’ve already checked if the blade was stuck to itself. Even backed off all the screws to make sure. But my blades still won’t move? Does that mean my gear case is bad then?
What can I do about when I start my stihl hedge trimmer it automatically starts moving the blades without me accelerating? Unless I turn it off that’s the only way they stop.
Question? Have you heard about the guy who got kicked out of Ikea? He asked the lady "How much for one-night stand". 🤣🤣🤣 Did you get it? -Bedroom furniture jokes I know, I'll go sit in the corner for 15 min 🤣🤣🤣
Eh up our Steve, sometimes the gear head can move down the drive shaft disengaging the drive spindle or, a small twig/off cut is jammed solid between the blades. Beer first Steve, work later. Lol!
Hey Steve and April! Besides the requested video on sharpening hedge trimmer blades (and OH, there are SO MANY VIDEOS on UA-cam by self consecrated EXPERTS), how about a comprehensive video on maintenance to the gear box, the guts of the machine, the do's and don'ts. Really enjoyed your recent in person videos with Donyboy and Chickanic. Problem is she probably hasn't been introduced to Canadian beer! Norm, Toronto. 🍁🍺🍺 and one for April 🍾!
I use brake cleaner spray on pretty much everything. Would use it here then lube w light oil, WD40 or similar. BTW, BUY THE CHEAPEST brake cleaner spray you can find. Walmart brand is what I’m talking about.
I wish I had watched this video before I threw away my electric hedge trimmers. Someone dug them out of the trash where I live at and they oiled them and they work perfectly fine.

I knew dried sap/pitch would be the problem from having been watching your videos for years. A great reminder, Steve.
Brand new unit and it sounded like it was seized up, wouldn't run. Did like you showed in the video and now runs like a champ, thank you 🙏
Been using WD-40 for over 35 years and it works great. Also a lot cheaper than that blade spray!
Right on
Hahaha aye, that's what I was gonna say "Blade spray? it's called WD40 after each use!" Then I saw you beat me to it 😄
WD40 doesn't work as effectively as a proper resin cleaner, nowhere near.
I was ready to take it apart but tried your suggestion and it works great now. A lot of the time the simple things are the best. Thanks.
Glad it helped
Thank you!!! I just broke out my brand new HL 94 K today that I bought this week and the blades wouldn’t move. I was low key freaking out. I’m pretty sure now this is what I’m dealing with… hopefully
thanks!!! struggle, but enough d40 and oil and more d40 and it finally freed up!
It worked. It worked!!!! My Ego hedge clipper blades were stuck and I loosened them with a screwdriver. Thanks so much.
Excellent!

Yep, if you happen to pass the WD or a pack of Zip Ties in the store you might as well grab it because yours will be empty or you can't find it.
Same strategy for me. The WD40 is an excellent solvent and dissolves any material that could cause sticking. I put that s*** on everything.
I have no complaints with it for many purposes, I know it will remove grease from hands , likely tree sap as well . But if anything is going to sit for some time it's best to coat it with something else. Engine oil is one of the best . WD-40 will cause rust and has very little lubrication value

is there a way to sharpen a hedge trimmer?

I use GT85 before & after (and sometimes during) use, as I find that WD40 solidifies sap, making movement a bit jerky.

Are you able to do a video on sharpening hedge trimmer blades with an angle grinder?
Yup! They're all gummed up. I spray different lubes on the blades to free them up. Thanks, Steve!

what was that screwdriver you used?
I've used spray/ vegetable oil starting up for lubrication, never thought to use it when storing away. 😊

When really bad I have used brake cleaner, or WD-40. Now when I get done with the trimmer I spray WD-40 before I put it away. 👍🙏✝️♥️🇺🇲🤗
I've seen that happen with rust between the blades. After cutting a wet hedge in the rain, then not spraying the blades down with WD40 afterwards.

I just took my trimmer apart to sharpen the blades (yea, I hadn't realized you could sharpen them without taking them apart) but when I tried to put them back together I wasn't sure where the washers went. Fair enough! Thank You...
Good Canadian beer 😎

Beer first Steve, work later. Lol!
I understand a little diesel fuel also works to dissolve the pitch.
If it's super stuck leave it in your used oil pale over night. Same is true for chains, they'll free right up
Wd40 works to but I use a silicon spray
My hedgetrimer hit a nail and stopped now it won't start

Agreed I’d like to see a strip down of this hedge trimmer attachment 👌🏻
Could you not use WD40 to clean and lube ?
DW40 sucks use Fluid film much greater product and is not made from petroleum
or equal parts transmission fluid and acetone ( nail polish remover )
5w30 works better than anything off the shelf for this problem.
I always used Terpentine
Always stop the hedge-cutter with the blades apart, then put the sheath back on.... Never had mine stick doing the aforementioned.
I use brake cleaner spray on pretty much everything. Would use it here then lube w light oil, WD40 or similar. BTW, BUY THE CHEAPEST brake cleaner spray you can find. Walmart brand is what I’m talking about.

I spray mine with dry silicone before each use
Try that AFTER each use....

I've had it where a tiny slip of wood has wedged between them too
WD 40 dissolves sap
I will test that! Thank You...

Prevention is better than cure. Clean and lube the blades when your finished. 👍
