I've always been a gigantic Van Halen fan, but something about the Sammy version just brought out the best music from all of those guys when they were together
We don’t know. Three sides to every story. All. I know is Sam has talked shit about Ronnie Montrose and Ed. Those guys never did. Ed did a handful of interviews Right when Sam left and said Sam had a bad work ethic and left it at that. Sam is still talking about it
@@stevedahl6531 Steve, listen I'm the biggest VH fan going and I get what you're saying when it comes to work ethic, but look at the body of work Sam has done since Van Halen and then look at Van Halen's body of work since he left....zero comparison....RIP KING
The first Montrose album absolutely sizzled. Not a single filler track on it. Any young bucks out there that haven't heard it, get the record and check it out.
It took me a minute or two to feel Sammy. I am a Dave era Van Halen guy all the way. You can`t top those first 6 albums. Even Diver Down has some great original stuff like Full Bug, Hang `em High, etc. But I have come to really like Sammy in every way. Great person, great singer and frontman, and one hell of a solid friend to his buddies !! Love ya Sammy !
I just finished reading Sammy's book, "Red" published in 2010. I loved learning about how he survived his turbulent childhood, about his family, his early days as a young musician, how hard he worked from a very young age, determined not to end up poor, which was his childhood experience, his fascination with numerology and mysticism (a passion which I share), his penchant for starting businesses, becoming an entrepreneur and making money. All of that was wonderful. However, I can easily see the proof of his recent admission that all parts relating to his experience with Van Halen were written out of bitterness and emotional pain. I could tell which stories he'd wished he hadn't told about Eddie and Alex, stories that were jut not necessary to share with the public. The most apparent evidence he wrote about them from an emotionally hurt place was in two areas: when talking about creating 5 number one albums with Van Halen, he doesn't expound on any of the joyous moments. Sure, he mentions being Eddie's best friend for a while, living next door to him and Valerie in Malibu, driving to 5150 studios every morning, racing down the PCH together. But he mentions the song, Dreams, a song he himself said on Professor of Rock's interview was his best song he wrote with Eddie (and I 100% agree with that) he literally mentions once in one sentence. Not praising it, not talking about how beautiful and special it was, how it represented some of the best music he ever created in his career, not just in VH but overall. No, he literally mentions it as a song that was written after the producer asked for "one more song." That's it. The other evidence that Sammy wrote about Van Halen coming from a purely emotionally hurt place is that when talking about Eddie's alcoholism and generally odd/outlandish behavior, especially in the 2004 time period, he does so with no compassion whatsoever for Eddie. I get it though, because when we are hurt, it's hard to acknowledge anyone else's pain. Not once in the book did Sammy think, "Hey, maybe all of Eddie's destructive behavior is an indication of deep, unresolved, unhealed emotional issues; Eddie is probably in a lot of pain.." Not once did he try to see beyond Eddie's toxic behavior and take it as an outward sign of Eddie's own pain; Eddie may not have taken his split with Valerie and the dissolution of his marriage in 2002 well and his erratic behavior may have been a sign of that. He may have been using drugs and alcohol as a means of escape and not dealing with that pain. For that matter, none of us have any idea how alcoholism had affected Ed and Al's parents' marriage, what the quality of their marriage was, and in turn, how it may have negatively affected their children, though we all know alcohol was a major part of Ed and Al's youth (I got to see with my own eyes the VH logo carved on the cement curb outside of "Van Halen Central" which was the liquor store a few blocks away from the VH family home in Pasadena.) Now yes, it does seem Ed and Al were insecure regarding Sammy's ability to make money from other businesses besides music and thus unfairly tried to limit him by prohibiting any advertisement of Sammy's bars and tequila brand, etc. during the ill-fated 2004 reunion tour; all Ed and Al did was music and truly, they were not business men in any sense compared to Sammy. I also fully acknowledge Eddie and Alex kicked Sammy out of the band most unfairly and bad-mouthed him in the press. It is a shame if the manager Ray Daniels truly poisoned Eddie's ear towards Sammy. But again, Sammy's own emotional hurt could not allow him an ounce of compassion for how much Eddie had been hurting during that time period. He and Eddie were musical soulmates who wrote some phenomenal music together and this is not truly expressed by Sammy anywhere in the book or minimally at best. Even the Balance tour seems to not be fairly judged by Sammy, which You Tube videos prove that Eddie, with his bad hip and Al with his neck brace, showed the band at their tightest. Eddie's playing in particular was sharp, fast and clean on that tour. Instead Sammy surmises Eddie was not sober even then, though Eddie had claimed sobriety in interviews back in '95. So yeah, I enjoyed this book but as a Van Halen fan who began listening in 1986 when I was 13 and got 5150 as my very first cassette tape, (I dug back to all the old stuff too and loved it ALL. I am a fan of Van Halen in all incarnations. Yes, even w/ Gary) and was inspired by Eddie to play guitar (as we all were back then) , I felt sad reading how judgmental Sammy was towards Eddie, showing no love or compassion whatsoever. But again, I get it. Sammy was still hurt when he wrote this book and it shows. I am very happy for Sammy that he was able to reconnect with Eddie before he transitioned and express their love for one another. In the end, that's what's matters.
Truth. I think Sammy regrets being shitty like that but then we all make mistakes. There was hurt on both ends and Eddie said plenty of bad stuff about Sammy as well. It was two best friends feeling hurt and lashing out. I think if Eddie had lived they would have fixed things up. Sammy really doesn't seem like a bad person.

@@JokersWild70 The Steinberger GL-2T 5150 and GL-2T OU812 were used in the studio on almost every song on 5150. And, its not that hard to play once you understand how it works. It not much different than any other locking tremolo, except everything is at the bridge rather than part being on the headstock.
The TransTrem allows the player to use the whammy bar to bend the pitch of all the strings while keeping in tune with each other, it’s a completely different sound than using a standard type vibrato setup which doesn’t do this. The TransTrem also lets you push down the bar to lock it in a different position so the guitar plays in a lower tuning, as you can hear Eddie using it on the song Summer Nights. It transposes the note positions perfectly. This probably is not all that complicated, The Steinberger itself is a pretty conventional guitar otherwise from a playing standpoint.

Sammy is one of the most kick ass PEOPLE i have ever known of Im from St Louis MO and he LOV V V V V ES st louis SAMMY FOREVER EDDIE FOREVER VH FOREVER
When Sam mentions that Eddie said let's go out and make some noise next year you can hear in his voice that he's upset that it never happened. I think he wanted to play with Ed one more time. Like all of us we wanted to see that. I guess we are all still grieving.
Sammy Hagar is 73, Looks Great! one of the Coolest most Humble Human beings I've ever seen. I would love to meet him and have a drink. Through my years I've met many Celebrities, none like this man.
The guitar on Summer Nights is a Steinberger GL2T with trans trem. That's what Sammy is talking about....raising and lowering the bar could transpose the whole guitar. Eddie had a striped one like his Kramer and Frankie. And he really was the only one who ever really got the most out of it. He was the G.O.A.T. Sammy you're the man
Cool story about wanting Sammy to sign legal papers to jam with VH, I think it was around 1980 after a show I was talking with Sammy and tried to give him some photos but said he could not take them due to a past issue. I told him I would sign something saying I was giving him the photos and would never sue him, so we used a piece of cardboard off the floor and I signed off.... great guy and stories on how he got his start ....
I love Sammy. I have to admit that I preferred van halen with DLR. But only cuz I loved the more heavy, raw, early stuff. But hagar was a phenomenal replacement and is 100% a class act and I prefer him better as a person over DLR. Van halen sith SH is killer and SH is one of the coolest guys ever, I just prefer the early albums. But I'm thankful for his albums to, cuz it just makes it more special and illustrates that music is progressive. Those albums I love more will always be there. And his albums I also love will be there too.
Palled around with George Lopez in the 80s and early 90s. We would go to bars and sing La Bamba. I have video of him doing it and nearly falling off the stage, we were so drunk. Good times!
My father left this planet and i hadnt talked to him for two years........ive made peace with him in my heart but its a heavy thing to carry Im SOOOOOOO HAPPY SAMMY GOT BACK WITH EVH BEFORE HE LEFT US

Very good interview. But, I wish someone would ask Sammy when he’s going to re-master all of his albums and add a few extras and live shows to the finished product?

One thing I'll say about Sammy is he actually makes sense when he talks unlike too many Roth interviewsI've heard but I prefer Roth (there is no comparison)
@@jerrywoods4066 roth in his prime was better but he has sounded like shit since 1988. its no wonder the van halen brothers kicked him out of the band. can you imagine dealing with roth back then? he was a wackjob. still is.

You hear Sammy give interviews by ten different people and his story is always the same about how things happened, you know it’s true when it’s always the same .He is straight up on his memory of how things went.
God Sammy Hagar! What a down to earth cool dude man! Seems like a guy that would hang out in your bedroom and jam, just like the old days! God Bless my man!
Respect to Roth even more every time Hagar goes running to the media to talk about his relationship with Edward. Roth may be a motormouth, but he knows when to curb it, and other than the tribute single, he’s been relatively silent, as have those who REALLY knew him. Contrast that with microphone hog Hagar.
@Troy Gene But, people always ask Sammy about Eddie....It's not Sammy's fault, and I'm sure Sammy is proud of his work with Van Halen, even if it was difficult at times, dealing with singing Dave's songs better than Dave himself, and dealing with Alex's BS....There's a reason why Mike left VH, and that "money train" to play with Sammy, and it comes down to having bandmates that are tolerable, and actually enjoying playing again.
Totally agree, he's got to milk it for all it's worth. Good for you Sammy, but I could care less. You got VH to market your Cabo Wabo industries and you made your fortune. The real tragedy is that Michael Anthony didn't get patch things up with Eddie. MA was there in the beginning wish he could have said goodbye to Eddie. But like you said, instead we get motormouth everywhere you turn.
Nobody cares about roth anymore. roth never had anything important to sing about, let alone anything remotely intelligent to say in an interview, THAT is why nobody interviews, or cares what roth tries to think about....That's the difference. Hagar is intelligent, and has something to say, and roth has nothing but expense between his ears, explaining why Eddie didn't feel the need to reconcile with roth...It just wasn't worth it to Eddie, or anyone else for that matter. roth was always the guy who was overpaid to talk over Van Halen songs.
@@Ogrelord5150 It was Eddie that kicked Michael Anthony out of Van Halen...And from that day forward, Van Halen, as a band ceased to exist. Michael Anthony was the foundation that held up the Van Halen brothers, and Eddie blew it by letting his brother make decisions.
18:34 Sammy is such a nice dude it’s crazy how much he got pushed around. It does seem like it happens a lot where a super successful band that has been going at it for years and are at the point where they can take a break and it will not effect their career and it becomes a big riff in the band because a member wants to take a break a year off and if Sammy wanted to take a year off in the 90’s I don’t blame him what’s the point of having millions of dollars and working so hard if you can’t live? If I was him at the time I would have built a studio at my house and took a year or 2 off. I would work on stuff at the studio once in a while and invite the guys over to jam once in a while. Like I’m not leaving the band I just want to spend time with family it’s just a long vacation. Shit if my band members lived close I would be cool with jamming once a week so when we get back together we have a ton of material.

Oh so there’s 2 George Lopez’s. The comedian/ sitcom actor and the cool the cool guy here interviewing Sammy The Red Rocker Hagar. Who would have thunk it.
oh how i wish that the story of Sam and Edward hashing things out before his passing was true, but my gut and knowing the complicated mess that festered for years when it really didn't need to be blown out of proportion by both IMHO, then that and Sammy's facial expressions when he talks about it tells me it didn't happen but makes for a great story to tell that i would have loved to have been reality. Ed and Sam i think were stubborn to the end but time ran out unexpectedly and it didn't really get resolved, may have had a few words possibly but too much time had built up between then and now to make it be ok with a brief conversation, especially because Edward was really secluded and dealing with such misery and pain of his own, I'm just not sure Ed would have had the will and the strength to try to bury that mess of hatchets left unchecked for so long. I wish that it was true but my heart deep down knowing them both, doesn't think so unfortunately. Just my opinion. I love them both no matter what. Edward will always be loved ETERNALLY as will Sam. May he live for another few decades before we have to think about that devastating possible loss tho.
Don't get me wrong i understood both sides at the initial time when it started, Ed needed Sam and to continue to write to avoid his pain from his divorce and Sam had his celebration of him getting married to his sweetheart , so both were kinda on opposite sides of the mirror darkly, but Roth and Landee , Templeman and Valerie all played a part in making that sink deeper then it needed to be in my opinion but as time went on it became a stand off of stubbornness and unwillingness to relent to humble ones own self's ego and perception of the split and it just got worse by everyone else's un needed involvement of 2 cents opinions and it ran away and became a life of its own. Least that's how it seemed to me.
I loved the VOA album when it came out but never got to see him on tour for it ! 5150 came out after my car wreck when i was hit by a drunk driver and was in the hospital 6 months so i didnt get to enjoy it when it came out !
If you go to Sammy's page, you'll see the link for Samny live in the motor city. That was the voa tour and it was at cobo hall and I was there. Fantastic.
Yeah so......what's your point? Your comment is just your opinion. And it's useless! It does nothing for nobody. They are both way more successful than you. And that's a fact, not an opinion!
I know what he means by seeing that Montrose at the time he went to his house, wasn't monetarily rich...which shows IMO that the lack of monetary wealth doesn't mean a person isn't rich in talent...

I can't believe Sammy is in his 70s noway. The man musician is just a GOAT in my opinion. Sammy and Eddie was Gr8 together👍Sammys early stuff killer tone and tunes 3 lock box, can't drive 55, only 1 way. Among a ton of others. Keep Rocking Sam!!!!!! Oh can't forget Mikey, the tank those 2 together best up...is there any interviews about Sammy's guitar rig back in the day?

When Sam mentions that Eddie said let's go out and make some noise next year you can hear in his voice that he's upset that it never happened. I think he wanted to play with Ed one more time. Like all of us we wanted to see that. I guess we are all still grieving.
Sammy is the only real worldwide rock star I ever got properly drunk with, and he's the nicest guy I ever met in the crazy record business that was.
You mean you never got drunk with Keith and Danny???
that dude is a super nice dude
Just him 🤪
I've always said that between Dave and Sammy...I'd KILL to have a drink with Sammy...
@@mattblatchley2061 His wife showed up and gave us all shit for getting hammered. Sammy rolled his eyes and just laughed.

I like this interviewer. He keeps things interesting rather than just the same old boring questions. Love Sammy!
Great singer 👩🎤
Sammy Hagar is 73, Looks Great! one of the Coolest most Humble Human beings I've ever seen. I would love to meet him and have a drink. Through my years I've met many Celebrities, none like this man.
The guitar on Summer Nights is a Steinberger GL2T with trans trem. That's what Sammy is talking about....raising and lowering the bar could transpose the whole guitar. Eddie had a striped one like his Kramer and Frankie. And he really was the only one who ever really got the most out of it. He was the G.O.A.T. Sammy you're the man
This comment needs to be pinned. I knew it was the Steinberger but your explanation was great! Thanks!
Release the music from that first day jamming Sammy!!!
My favorite band Van Halen with Sammy!
Saw Sammy zip line the crowd at the Cow Palace for New Years 1978. Great show.
5 minutes into this I had to turn it off,go listen to the first Montrose album (for like the 10,000th time) then come back and finish
Palled around with George Lopez in the 80s and early 90s. We would go to bars and sing La Bamba. I have video of him doing it and nearly falling off the stage, we were so drunk. Good times!
My father left this planet and i hadnt talked to him for two years........ive made peace with him in my heart but its a heavy thing to carry
Im SOOOOOOO HAPPY SAMMY GOT BACK WITH EVH BEFORE HE LEFT US
I prefer the sound of a CD over a digital file any day. I do listen to digital but when I really want to crank on it, time to dig out the discs and fire up the stereo. Kenwood KRV-7060 run through a Behringer MDX2600 signal processor into a pair of passive radiator studio monitors and a Polk sub.
CD's sound better because they are the uncompressed verion of the the file, unlike digital music.
I am happy Sammy made peace with Eddie before he left us.
Very good interview. But, I wish someone would ask Sammy when he’s going to re-master all of his albums and add a few extras and live shows to the finished product?
I love Sammy.. from standing Hampton through all of the van Hagar albumsi seen every show... Most underrated singer ever... But you.. Sammy.. you are number 2 on my list.. no one will ever take my number 1 off the best rock singer ever.... Bon Scott. Hands down ..

Trans trem steinberger Sam.. Ed used it on a couple songs on 5150...also used it on...me wise magic in 96’ when Roth came back temporarily.
He used two models in the studio for 5150 - the GL-2T 5150 and the GL-2T OU812. And they were used on almost every track.

Is there a chance Sammy would play with Wolfie VH? He has a strong album coming out. He’s a talented young man, doing his own thing.
You hear Sammy give interviews by ten different people and his story is always the same about how things happened, you know it’s true when it’s always the same .He is straight up on his memory of how things went.
Sammy must be the most positive, happiest Rockstar ever.
God Sammy Hagar! What a down to earth cool dude man! Seems like a guy that would hang out in your bedroom and jam, just like the old days! God Bless my man!
Got me thru quarantine..love u sammy🥰
Man,I love this guy! Always have.
Roth STILL can't sing....Sammy is a much better musician, singer, and human being....Especially compared to "LSD roth".
Sammy is such a good dude.

I believe the guitar Sammy is referring to on the Summer Nights song is a Steinberger
Correct....Steinberger GL2T with trans trem. You could transpose the tuning of the whole guitar by raising and lowering the bar
Matt Pinfield is one shiny dude.
he gettin old
That host looks like the big version of Verne Troyer.

Use me up YEAHHHHHHH. Go for it Sammy.
oh how i wish that the story of Sam and Edward hashing things out before his passing was true, but my gut and knowing the complicated mess that festered for years when it really didn't need to be blown out of proportion by both IMHO, then that and Sammy's facial expressions when he talks about it tells me it didn't happen but makes for a great story to tell that i would have loved to have been reality.
WOW! thank you!
You da man Dave!
