  • Did you know Henry Ford once bought and ran a coal company named Fordson in rural Kentucky? Did you know he built buildings on a coal camp and they still remain today, along with his previous party house and lots of interesting other things.
We visit Stone Ky, checking out some old buildings. A 100 year old theater and a cemetery across the street from Fords old hang out pad.
Since Henry Ford made cars-which required steel, which required coke and iron-it was no wonder he wanted to go into the coke, iron, steel, and transportation businesses. When Ford Motor Company experienced a work stoppage due to a coal shortage in 1922 he made his move, forming the Fordson Coal Company to buy the Stone mines and others in the region.
This is about 15 mins from Williamson WV if your ever in the area!

Heather's comment about the insects and the heat hit home for me. I lived in a really old house in WV by the river and it was like a jungle! But so beautiful. Thanks for another trip down the backroads.

Up here (little east of Pittsburgh) we call them patch towns. We live in one. :) Our house was built in the 1880s.

The large scale looking fossil you found I believe is a very large fern. I have one I found in the mines that was 44” long and 19” wide. And it was a single frond!! Huge!! And what you found I looks identical to mine. I found fossilized Bamboo trees that were 14” around. I brought a big section of it home. I’ve found snakes birds and turtles. All in the same area of the mine. Almost like a bone pile out west. WV is full of wonderful fossils. At a strip mines I worked at we uncovered a pit that was 300’ by 150’. It was at about 2800’ above sea level. The slate that was on top of the coal was 20” thick. It was 20” of nothing but sea shells!! It was amazing!

I lived in Stone camp all of my life in Palm Creek area. We moved around quite often in 1967. I lived at a flex. They are a graveyard up on the hill from the old ballfield that you probably never have seen get in contact with me, and I will give you a new place to go to in a flex.

I went to Berry College in Rome GA. Henry Ford donated a lot of money to the college and they built several buildings that kind of look like a cathedral. Beautiful place. Thanks Henry.

I recommend doing more to explain Henry Ford's connection to this location. Currently in the Philippines so it is not likely that I can visit anytime soon.

At 14:45 That could be a Oxyacetylene LIME LIGHT!! They where used as spot lights to showcase one actor or singer at a time. High watt electric lights did NOT exist in the 20' 30' and 40's They bounced Oxyacetylene off of a piece of limestone to acheave a bright spot light. Search lights where built the same way. Once they got going they shut off the Acetylene and left pure oxygen take over the burning of the lime. One ounce of lime would last a whole hour. Carbon arc was to temperamental with out electric analog control feed motors making the spot light to heavy and bulky to follow the actor. HENCE THE TERM: "Your turn in the limelight".
