- The Hatfield-McCoy feud, also described by journalists as the Hatfield-McCoy war, involved two rural American families of the West Virginia-Kentucky area along the Tug Fork of the Big Sandy River in the years 1863-1891. The Hatfields of West Virginia were led by William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield, while the McCoys of Kentucky were under the leadership of Randolph "Ole Ran'l" McCoy. Those involved in the feud were descended from Joseph Hatfield and William McCoy (born c. 1750). The feud has entered the American folklore lexicon as a metonym for any bitterly feuding rival parties.
The McCoy family lived mostly on the Kentucky side of the Tug Fork; the Hatfields lived mostly on the West Virginia side. The majority of the Hatfields, although living in Mingo County (then part of Logan County) fought for the Confederacy in the American Civil War; most McCoys also fought for the Confederates, with the exception of Asa Harmon McCoy, who fought for the Union. The first real violence in the feud was the death of Asa as he returned from the war, murdered by a group of Confederate Home Guards called the Logan Wildcats. Devil Anse Hatfield was a suspect at first, but was later confirmed to have been sick at home at the time of the murder. It was widely believed that his uncle, Jim Vance, a member of the Wildcats, committed the murder.
The Hatfields were more affluent than the McCoys and politically well-connected. Anse's timbering operation was a source of wealth for his family, while the McCoys were more of a lower-middle-class family. Ole Ran'l owned a 300-acre (120 ha) farm. Both families had also been involved in the manufacturing and selling of illegal moonshine, a popular commodity at the time.

Don't feel bad, I finally had to break down and switch companies. You might want to look into Spectrum, with my unlimited data and a brand new iPhone 12, it's like 80, 85 a month somewhere in there. Me and dad, and Carissa is going on to be on there too, the bill for 2 lines and my 12 my unlimited and his pay as gig plan, is 121/month. I like it, I have used almost 25 gb of data and it's not slowed down one bit on functioning.

Not at all. Plus if you already have or going to have other services like phone, cable, or internet, I think you get a discount. We have internet with the 400mbps and phones, and I think it's like 120 for it all plus our cells, it's like 145 somewhere in there. Be something to look into. When went to KY Sat. I had service almost everywhere went so I can use mirror link Google maps to the radio.

Go for it, there is a lot to see, make sure the weather is fair, and you don't get to miss anything. That's what happened to us, the weather was fair then turned into rain and couldn't see anything else.
I live 15 min from here. research what you want to see. besides Hatfield , dil cemetery and Octavia Smith Hatcher grave there is also a new distillery down town. Bob amos over look is neat. Breaks interstate park is maybe 20 min past and it is beautiful . Has cabins. lodge and camp sites.

This was extremely interesting! It was nice to get facts vs the movie! Which I watched and cried like a damned baby over! The movie was ESP HARD FOR ME BEING A DECENDENT OF THR MCCOYS!! We don’t remember his name, but when you travel to Pikeville, you can stop and chat with him anytime as long as he’s there wise. He has a bunch of stuff there from the tv series to actual artifacts from the original feud. Thank you for sharing your story with us.

How do we get to see this cabin fire site ...do you need permission
You don't need permission at all, the gentleman is super nice. He may be there when you show up and and he may not be. You can park in his driveway and the cabin site is adjacent to his property behind his neighbor's house.

It was them, to mimic the Hatfield had the McCoy feud. Didn’t want the 2 kids marrying each other and the fathers were feuding with each other ‘cause the family was feuding before their time. Good ole Andy Griffith Show, such a classic

Not sure. Unless they got confused on the dates. Or maybe he did died in 1921. That would be a good question for the historian

Not sure about the inbreeding part, but pretty much all families in the 1800s married or married into some sort of distant relatives. It was common in the day.
