- 🔥 1000m World Record - 2:38.2 🔥
After years of training and refining my sprint rowing approach, I finally put together my best-ever 1000m effort. In this video, you’ll see the full uncut race, complete with stroke-by-stroke splits, power data, and pacing strategy.
It’s been over four years since I last rowed 2:39.6, and after months of consistent training including recent beach sprint assessments, I felt my fitness was a level capable of producing a quality performance.
💡 Want to train like this? My online course, Speed Beyond Limits, covers everything I’ve learned about sprint rowing, from 500m to 1000m, including weightlifting, drag factor optimization, and race pacing.

That was so much more pleasant to watch than trying a max effort 1K myself. Top notch slug mode, good sir! Top notch..
Awesome effort chap on bike in background less than impressed 😂
Hell yeah Phil, super hype for ya
@@EamonGlavin thanks! Super happy
The amount of pain in the end must be insane! 😮💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Totally insane effort. Mad respect!
Amazing Big Phil, congrats
I tuned in and immediate fancied a packet of Smarties! That’s subliminal advertising for you…
Congrats on an outstanding effort Phil 💪💪💪
Wow! Inspiring !!!
Insane! Congrats 💪
Oh my. Having done a lot of rowing when in my 20s I can still feel the pain and I was nowhere near your pace! Insane!
Congratulations Phil 💪
This is very awesome
Bloody hell!! Everyone rushing to make sure you’re ok…
This is outstanding! Kudos!
Fantastic! Well done lad.
This is insane! Congratulations!
Such an incredible achievement.
How does the goat only have 350 subs
@@JustCopeYT I'm not a very good influencer...
@@psclapp you could try being like Dark horse rowing
Incredible
Amazing
Absolutely amazing. I'd love to know what you could do for a 2k as a very much power focused rower
The dude cycling in the background is like "Who cares? Typical day at the office"😂
This is awesome, congratulations! What is the breathing technique when going all out like this?
Next time I suggest you should add your heart rate , well done
Such an awesome row. I enjoyed your chat with Sam Loch. I hope you do decide to have a crack at a 1,500 and show that there are other ways to approach a low 4 minute performance. I wonder if 4k individual pursuit track cyclists have a similar or different training intensity distribution to 1,500m runners?
@@anthonyward5329 those are the events I would be looking at for inspiration
Christ I just did 3:25 and it nearly killed me.
I can feel everything burning
@@Clynikal that's an accurate description
Well done Big Phil 👏
Thanks dan
and meanwhile the dude on the bike is blessedly oblivious to this feat!
@@anderzoritaurricelqui581 "looks like a hard session you did" was the description from him after
I noticed the weights holding it down at the front haha you don't half get some looks in the gym when the rower is making lots of noise and lifting off the ground and banging down. Once I found out that people had these records like this chap and James hall and that there is technique to it, it immediately made the concept2 vastly more interesting to me to use
Hall is a beast, but he's clearly sauced to the gills.
Zooty on an erg is elite
💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣🎇. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Amazing.
700W+ for that long is insane. my max watts are around 750W for maybe 5 strokes
What’s the biggest change(s) you made for the 1k compared to the 500? It looks like you are rowing longer. I’m sure your drag factor and feet are set lower too.
@@backtobasics4267 0.3m longer strokes on average, a little less top end strength and a little more glycolytic fitness
@ Very fascinating, thanks for the share. How many more meters of slide longer would you row for 2000m (by comparison)?
At What resistance out the rower at when you broke the record?
What's the resistance level?
What is rower fan setting
Well done Phil. What is your weight? [Edit: reddit says you were 122.45kg last year]
@@specialblorb yes around 120 to 123 generally
That is just incredible Phil. What an amazing achievement!!
As an aside, how do you keep your heels so well pinned to the foot plates? When I come forward on the recovery my heels tend to rock up.
Also, your HRM is only 180 at the end, does your heart rate never get higher? Mine hits 184 (age 52) at peak effort.
He's rowing in weightlifting shoes that have a hard sole and a bit of a heel. Brilliant since he's basically doing a hundred power cleans.
@@carlhoward9527 I don't ever think about my heels placement (I know some people think lifted heels is a big point of coaching). I don't ever run so probably fairly flexible ankles which makes it easier. For these sprint efforts I am more limited by the glycolytic system so not getting to maxHR. That's great you are still fit enough to hit those numbers at 52! Very impressive
And I thought sub 4 mins was good 😂
What did you have damper setting on?
Zooming in, looks like damper at around 6.5.
I can do about 3 strokes at that pace.
Awesome it’s the worse thing. I recently did a marathon and I was in a very special place after. Like a zombie 🧟
@Vusseyv881 I would be a zombie after a marathon too!
This looks miserable haha
