This movie does a masterful job of pulling in the viewer by showing and not telling. The reason he let him live is after the greeting in English, he then complimented him, in Russian, about his apparent weight loss, which Francis replied in Russian, that he has lost 27kg (60lbs). Francis is replying the number of armed guards in the building.
They got Bridget Moynahan, an actress with a significant amount of star power in her own right, to play the role of John Wick’s deceased wife. She’s barely on screen, yet she’s not wasted because she is part of the driving force behind John’s quest for vengeance. Probably my favorite action movie of the last decade or so.
Great reaction. You need to watch the other 2 before Chapter 4 comes out. I love these reactions where everyone is like "Who is John Wick". And when you find out, you know why everyone says "oh" and why they are worried. There are two are just as good.
Willem Dafoe's character takes the job of killing John Wick after he asks if it is an exclusive contract. So his intention was all along to protect John Wick. It is an easy thing to miss when you see it the first time and you get the impression he intends to kill hired but in a rewatch it you can see it is not something he what to do and only take it when he knows other people will be after John Wick as a way. That way he can help his friend and a the same time try to avoid any troubles.
I think the base motivation, they build in this movie, is one of the best, if not the best, I have ever seen in an action movie. The moment they kill this cute little puppie everione is immediatly behind John, and they are OK with what he does. I have seen plenty of reactions to this and it works every time. Even (and sometimes especially) women, who are generally averse to excessive violence in movies are on board when they kill the dog. That was such a smart piece of writing. 😄
Unsure if anyone else let you know, but the conversation with Francis at 13:45, where John asks Francis if he lost weight, Francis mentions his weight in kilograms (27) implying the number of men inside. John let him go since he knew Francis was not in the way of his target. (The subtitles blurred the reasoning behind the question/answer and its importance.)
One of those movies where the protagonist was introduced by the bad guys. A mob boss of Viggo's status suddenly at a loss for words with "Oh." I love that shot of John stepping out of the shadows like a nocturnal predator and pouncing.
I remember seeing this in the theater. I have never seen a movie audience galvanize so quickly behind the hero. The moment that puppy died everyone wanted those Russians dead.
I love the attention to detail in this movie. They don't use the unlimited ammo cheat code and fire 39 shots from a gun that has a 12 bullet magazine without reloading.
This movie is a great lesson in subtle storytelling. Even the lighting color scheme works to convey emotion. During the times when Helen is alive, golds and yellows. After she's gone, cold blues. After Daisy is killed, the film gets subtly sharper and the contrast is increased as John now has something to focus on. And after it is all done, he goes home down the same path where Helen collapsed and while the colors have not returned to normal, they are not as drab. Then there is the actions Viggo takes. Every time there is a threat to himself, he hides behind his men. It really shows how Iosef became such a spoiled brat.
The John Wick house is out here on Long Island in a very exclusive town called Mill Neck.. (At the end of Horseshoe road right by the water.) -- The runway he practices on is Republic Airport, Farmingdale, NY.. -- The place where Ms. Perkins gets hers, is the Bethesda Fountain in Central Park.
it's the same with Riddick in the second movie (The Chronicles of Riddick), "Death by Teacup". Only the best turn everything they get their hands on into a deadly weapon.
Love johns way of revenge, no stretched out monologues “ I finally got you… and now…. My half an hour monologue on how and why!!” Just one to the chest/abdomen and one to the dome and the most bad ass Death Stare and walk off 💯
Something that was subtle in the movie, but it get clear to everyone when Viggo decides to deliver his own son in trade for his life. The problem is the father, the son is just the result. That is why, when John finally get the boy, it was that simple. I think what John was feeling at that moment was "here I am, cleaning the trash fo Viggo again". That is why his rage didn't subdue.
I keep watching these reaction video just for the reactions to: "He was the one you sent to kill the f***ing boogeyman." and "Just a few days after his wife died...". I love this movie so much.
There's a screenwriting "how to" book called Save the Cat. Its title comes from the first thing the author advises you put in your movie: have your protagonist "save the cat" (or similar) so the audience immediately likes and roots for them. This movie shows that the opposite works as well: have your antagonist kill the dog.
I'm remembering a roundtable with the creators talking about all the little things they wanted to do with the movie. They reacted to some of the 'fan favorite' clips and comments and built up what was going on to answer questions or explain the framework, and you're completely correct. The writers had decided they wanted John not to be the stereotypical hero, but to be 'the bad guy that kills bad guys'. So the question was 'how do we make that happen?', and the answer was simple. They needed to make something HORRIBLE happen in the first half-hour that would cement sympathy for him as the placeholder 'hero' of the film, despite him being every bit as bad a guy as the 'bad guys'. So he tries to be a good person. Tries to make his girlfriend and wife happy. Tries to clean his act up. Tries to be the best man for her that he can be- And then she dies. But she prepares this gift to remind him how proud she was that he'd left it all behind for her. Then some shitbag kills the dog, and EVERYBODY hates when an adorable puppy dies. Who can blame a grieving widower losing his shit when the last thing his wife did for him gets taken away? I certainly couldn't blame him. Also, fun fact. The 'Oh' was originally going to be either 'whoah' or 'wow' in the script, but the writers decided not to make the 'whoah' meme follow Keanu to John Wick. They changed it to 'oh', and it thankfully stuck.
24:42 Evie is just straight up terrifyingly and (simultaneously) amusingly savage in this reaction. I promise I will never mess with her pets or her car….
I watched this movie with my mother. She is an extremely peaceful and kind woman but after what happened to the dog, she had the exact same reaction. This movie did a brilliant job of making the bad guy such a hate sink.
As much as “Oh” holds a place at the top of best ultimate lines in a movie, “Everything’s gotta price” is right up there with it…especially in context with this movie.
They didn't really beat John and kill his dog over the car. It was about Iosef's humiliation. Throughout the film, we are shown how little Ioseph means. The only power or respect he gets is because he's the son of a powerful and respected crime lord. At the gas station, Iosef tries to assert his dominance by using money to buy John's car . But John dismissed him, saying "the cars not for sale." John didn't even stop to consider it. Even worse, Iosef was shown to be powerless in front of his goons. Humiliation. Iosef needed to reassert his dominance n front of his goons. So, Iosef made a threat to John, but he said it in a language that he thought John couldn't understand. That threat was mostly for the benefit of his goons, so they could see Iosef reassert his power. But John did understand Iosef's threat. When John said "Not this bitch", he was telling Iosef that he was utterly powerless. And his goons just made the situation worse by pulling Iosef away, trying to protect him like he's a child. At that point, the only way to assert his dominance again was by beating up John, killing his dog and taking his car
This movie is great for exposing our basic instincts. The fact so many humans care more about a dog than a human life says a lot. And explains a lot about our society. The irony that the dog was going to be put down anyway. And nobody cared enough to do anything then.
Oh Evie... you're starting to become one of my go-to reactors. I was a casual sub for a long time, but since you started film reactions... I'm all hooked. Your comments about Daisy's death... I'm right there with you. Brings all the feels and tears. Great reaction to this excellent film. Can't wait for the next one. 👍
I love this film so much !! There are so many little nuances to this film. And multiple things you can notice. Like the fact that you can track Vigo's mental mind frame, by his alcohol/drug usage. He starts off by breaking out the really expensive stuff, because who cares now? Then moves on to Vodka, then I think it's cocaine, then finally just smoking weed and looking for his gun in the back seat of his own car. In addition, you can tell who's going to win in any fight, by the background color. Whenever someone steps into John's blue light of death, they die a second later. It turns red when people are safe, and it turns purple when John gets shot. But then shifts back to blue a second later before he kills the guy. Lastly, this film is about respect. And what happens when respect isn't earned. John asked the body guard if he lost weight. The body guard responds with a specific number in Russian. It's been noticed that the subtitled translation is actually wrong. HOWEVER, it IS, the number of guys John's about to kill. Even the body guard was telling John how many guys there were. I recommend watching this film again. There are so many things that no one sees the first time.
a person has a choice, that dog did not. but there is no better way to get the audience to side with the bad guy than killing the innocent dog(it works every time)!
Great reaction! All the Wick movies are great and worth a watch. Ever seen ‘The Lord of The Rings’? It’s the mother of all fantasy stories..it’s wonderful!
Batman’s one rule is literally to not kill anyone. John wick is literally the anti Batman. They literally are in no way related to the point that I’m worried you’re so drunk that you may die of alcohol poisoning.
Really good reaction! Really enjoyed it! The scene with the cop at his door is _so_ *very* good! You can see him (the cop) working it out in his head ... OK, not working, but he's dealing with something - probably something from his past 'coming back for him'; he seems to figure that it's probably some 'bad guys' that John took care of, so why sweat it? ... fewer bad guys wandering around now, so it's all good, and I won't have to worry about facing them myself! He's probably thinking "thanks for the service, John!"
Fun fact: When Marcus (Willem Dafoe) asks Vigo if it's an open contract on John Wick it's because he knows other assassins will be coming for him, that's why he takes the deal. To protect John.
Minor spoilers of a joke in John wick 2. John has to go to Rome, and he stays at the Roman continental hotel and speaks with its manager. The manager asks John if he is in Rome to kill the pope. That is the reputation he had. That he can and will kill anyone, no matter what
The Continental exists so that everyone in this world has a safe spot. No one can conduct "business" there...as you saw. Perkins was stupid and greedy to take on the contract against John, not just because of his skill set, but because she did it on Continental grounds. John should have killed her after she tried to kill him in his room. Viggo was played by Mikael Nyqvist, a wonderful Swedish actor. Before this, he was best known for his role as Mikael Blomqvist in the 'Millennium' Trilogy films based on the worldwide best-selling novels by Steig Larsson...'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo', 'The Girl Who Played With Fire' and 'The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest' opposite Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth Salander, the "Girl" of the titles. These films are in Swedish, and they did a remake in English of 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' with Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara as Mikael and Lisbeth. Unfortunately, Nyqvist passed just a couple of years after 'John Wick' was released. These films owe a LOT to The Matrix films... - Chad Stahelski (the director) was Keanu's stunt double on the first, and stunt coordinator on the second and third, and even had a small role in the recent fourth one. Chad and Keanu are friends. - The main bodyguard with the square jaw who threw John to the ground in the nightclub is Daniel Bernhardt, a stuntman and actor, who played Agent Johnson in the second Matrix film. - The doctor who patched up John was Randall Duk Kim, and he played The Keymaker in the second Matrix. There are more Matrix easter eggs in the other 'John Wick' films.
30:32 The US have what is colloquial termed as *"Kill shelters"* for stray cats & dogs and other pets too. Which IMO is awful. At least in the UK we have the RSPCA & the PDSA thankfully.
You asked John Wick (Keanu Reeves) was born Jardani Jovonovich in Belarus. He was an orphan, and was taken in by the Tarasov Russian Mafia where he was raised as an assassin. He was so ruthless that the mafia boss Viggo Tarasov respected and feared him. Peace out.
Whats fucked up, is that dog crawled to lay with john before she died. She only knew him for a day, but she loved him unconditionally anyway. So she wanted them to be together till the very end and to lay with john incase he died and she didnt. At first i thought the fucks who killed her placed her body there. But then i saw the blood trail sliding across the floor. Like she was pulling her body across like a snake. God i pray for any soul who even attempts to hurt my dog
I think around the 4th or 5th film is when john will learn that someone had a hand in his wife's sickness/death through giving her something secretly radiation wise or disease in a drink or food that way it will lead up to the final crochet endo in the very final movie
The "oh" thing said so slow was a nod to his early days in hollow movies like Pare(great movie about family) and also Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure which in both he says "whoa" slowly. There is also the line in either this or the next one in which he says " Guns Lots of guns" which is from The Matrix (first one). Thanks to the John Wick movies Keanu is classed as the best weapons expert in Hollywood they coined the phase gunfu a mix of martial ars, knives and guns. You should watch him training for John Wick he is absolutely amazing. He has such a good heart and pure soul we could do with more people like Keanu in the world. Most of his money from tge matrix first film he gave alot of his money to tge special effects team, he bought motorcycles for the stuntman and donated a very large sum of his money to tge hospital that treated and saved his sister who was fighting leukaemia. Like I said a wonderful pure soul. He is not the type of actors who wants bodyguards or fancy stuff he rides the subway, can be seen sitting with homeless people for hours having lunch. He truly has had a traumatic life and tge scene where u see him crying reading a letter from his late wife in the movie but it always makes me cry knowing the tragedy that has happened in his life with his late partner and the loss of their child. Cause I truly believe in that moment he is thinking of them if not looking at pictures or something like that. It really breaks my heart every single time.
12:25 There's something called planning for the future, that 2 million would probably cover his mortgage for the rest of his life, had he lived that is
"Be seeing you John." was more of a reference to be seeing him in hell. Everybody dies one day right. So he's basically saying they'll meet again in hell.
I watched this a few weeks ago and read the description before and thought the story was that his dog got kidnapped. That sounded lame to me but when I watched it and saw Wick get the dog as a gift from his dead wife I instantly changed my mind and thought it was a really good storyline. So I thought the film was going to be about how his dog gets kidnapped and he has to get it back due to it being the last memory of his wife. And then....I realised I had misread it. I reckon it would be better if they had the dog kidnapped.😞

@@watevatube Yeah, the people that killed Daisy aren't innocent. So F them.
@@watevatube Whoever kills a cute animal isnt innocent...
I meant in general, not specifically about these guys.
Even before that puppy, for years I’ve wanted Russians dead as fuck.
@@HappyHarryHardon Based.
Notice that at the end when he is walking with the dog it’s the same place his wife collapsed at the beginning.
Just the fact that Aurelio straight up namedrops the big bad boss's son without a second thought is pretty telling.
I once saw him kill three men in a bar, with a pencil. A bloody ✏️!
That gave me chills right there.
Yeah - John Wick and three men, one pencil ... Wick walks out alone!
it's the same with Riddick in the second movie (The Chronicles of Riddick), "Death by Teacup". Only the best turn everything they get their hands on into a deadly weapon.
The puppy was a gift from his wife from beyond. His only consolation that was left for him in this world.
Tries to be the best man for her that he can be-
And then she dies.
That moment the bad guy “shut the dog up”…we ALL said “you have signed your death warrant.”
remember Keanu Reeves did most of his own fights and trained for over 4000 hours per film in the use of guns and fighting. amazing guy !!
also remember real guns were not used on set and the fights were choreographed
I believe it was stated as 4000 hours total , not per. 2 solid years at 40/week be about 4000
Nah no way was it 4000 hours per film, that's 167 days
24:42 Evie is just straight up terrifyingly and (simultaneously) amusingly savage in this reaction. I promise I will never mess with her pets or her car….
I watched this movie with my mother. She is an extremely peaceful and kind woman but after what happened to the dog, she had the exact same reaction. This movie did a brilliant job of making the bad guy such a hate sink.
The directors said they were not aware killing the dog would give them a free pass on who dies and how many but they are ok with it
As much as “Oh” holds a place at the top of best ultimate lines in a movie, “Everything’s gotta price” is right up there with it…especially in context with this movie.
Reminds me of that scene in equalizer when Robert was talking to the Teddy
This movie is great for exposing our basic instincts. The fact so many humans care more about a dog than a human life says a lot. And explains a lot about our society.
The irony that the dog was going to be put down anyway. And nobody cared enough to do anything then.
Oh Evie... you're starting to become one of my go-to reactors.
I was a casual sub for a long time, but since you started film reactions... I'm all hooked.
Your comments about Daisy's death... I'm right there with you. Brings all the feels and tears.
Great reaction to this excellent film.
Can't wait for the next one. 👍
"Be seeing you." He meant in hell.
Wow. Just... wow....
a person has a choice, that dog did not.
but there is no better way to get the audience to side with the bad guy than killing the innocent dog(it works every time)!
when that Russian said at the end be seeing you John he didn't mean alive he meant in hell
His wife suffered from Terminal Movie Illness (TMI), the unnamed illness which has killed so many actors over the years.
When he says "be seeing you John", he knows he's dying. He means he'll see John in hell when John eventually dies.
What I learned from John Wick is that it's ok to beat your elderly neighbor if his son gets out of line.
idk how I ran into this reaction video but I'm in love with you already. The goodbye wave when they killed Perkins had me 😂😂
At 26:06, I agree with HONEST TRAILERS. I believe Malice is just excited that he got that close to actually shooting John with the gun !!
"You uhm... working again?" 😂😂😂 Fun reaction, such an infectious laugh.
7:16 Girl, you have no idea what's coming! Either way, I'm with u. Waiting for the Chapter 2&3 reaction. Hope you'd remember this comment.
25:35 - Some movie trivia: NYC doesnt let anyone do high-speed chases on the streets. so, they used a private dock for the end scene..
Great reaction! All the Wick movies are great and worth a watch. Ever seen ‘The Lord of The Rings’? It’s the mother of all fantasy stories..it’s wonderful!
He said "Be seeing you" meaning they would meet again in hell.
John wick is like if batman had no mask and cape.
Batman’s one rule is literally to not kill anyone. John wick is literally the anti Batman. They literally are in no way related to the point that I’m worried you’re so drunk that you may die of alcohol poisoning.
My favorite part is John walking into the church and killing the clergy. Dead clergy are my favorite kind.
He's probably thinking "thanks for the service, John!"
and no paper work for the cop 🤣🤣🤣
Jimmy the Cop also took off his hat to cover his body camera when he realized what was up
How helpless he must have felt as she died. While the whole city feared him
Fun fact: When Marcus (Willem Dafoe) asks Vigo if it's an open contract on John Wick it's because he knows other assassins will be coming for him, that's why he takes the deal. To protect John.
Minor spoilers of a joke in John wick 2.
John has to go to Rome, and he stays at the Roman continental hotel and speaks with its manager. The manager asks John if he is in Rome to kill the pope. That is the reputation he had. That he can and will kill anyone, no matter what
Siuuu! Theon Greyjoy never disappoints 😂
I'm sure you will also enjoy 2 & 3. Great reaction
"No land, no wealth, no silver or gold; nothing satisfies me but your soul."
Great reaction videos. Watching you watch and react to movies is enjoyable. Thank you 🤩
i love love love the other 3 movies, but the first is perfect. Simple and executed to perfection
Don't spare people. Kill them. :)
-Evie 2023
At least in the UK we have the RSPCA & the PDSA thankfully.
the director was a stunt man so he knew how to shoot the movie in a way to best show the action
Can you imagine the thought process in choosing what type of dog/puppy daisy should be.
Peace out.
This and Deadpool my favorite films in last 10 years, funny and action packed
Whats fucked up, is that dog crawled to lay with john before she died. She only knew him for a day, but she loved him unconditionally anyway. So she wanted them to be together till the very end and to lay with john incase he died and she didnt. At first i thought the fucks who killed her placed her body there. But then i saw the blood trail sliding across the floor. Like she was pulling her body across like a snake. God i pray for any soul who even attempts to hurt my dog
Oh my god stopppp I also thought they put her there, but now my heart is even more shattered :'(
Just got on youtube to see what movie you chose this week and could barely grab my headphones fast enough. This will be a great reaction
I think around the 4th or 5th film is when john will learn that someone had a hand in his wife's sickness/death through giving her something secretly radiation wise or disease in a drink or food that way it will lead up to the final crochet endo in the very final movie
After John Wick was born, he drove his parents home. When John Wick was born the Dr said “It’s a man!”
This movie was well written, they knew what they were doing!
Jimmy the cop taking his hat off, respect
“All that for the car?” A $250,000+ car.
Whoa..Alright thank you..right back at you..hope you enjoy the other movies also.
Evie waving at Perkins before she gets shot is absolutely fucken hilarious lol.
The actor who ‘killed’ dog was so upset that he adopted her
He thought John was dying too, so he was basically saying; "ill be seeing you shortly in hell, John."
12:25 There's something called planning for the future, that 2 million would probably cover his mortgage for the rest of his life, had he lived that is
Lmao! Early time of the video," i am glad this won on the pole" later on the video. "Why did you guys want me to watch this?" 😅🤣😂
"Be seeing you John." was more of a reference to be seeing him in hell. Everybody dies one day right. So he's basically saying they'll meet again in hell.
I mean, depending on what state he's in, John was potentially completely legal on killing any and all intruders. Castle doctrine, baybee.
Jimmy and Francis are two of the smartest characters in this movie. John Wick is 'working' again? Be polite and stay out of his way.
When they say "Be seeing you" they mean in the afterlife. Or hell. Or wherever they end up.
Then he would be the pet version of Brian Mills...
@@Ikller-xh7qq 📞 "If you let my dog go now, that’ll be the end of it -- I will not look for you, I will not pursue you -- but if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.”
It's great to see you enjoy this movie! Agree with other folks that you should totally watch the other films to-date before John Wick Chapter 4 comes out.
Just before watching John Wick Chapter 2, you may want to watch the teaser trailer that leads into Chapter 2 for an entertaining recap of the first movie. 'John Wick - A Symphony of Violence' is exactly that :)
one detail noone really notices about jimmy the police officer, he removes his hat to speak to john as a person rather than an officer.
"Be Seeing You" isn't quite the full meaning. "Be Seeing You In Hell" would be closer to what Vego meant.
Best movie about a boy and his dog.
A coming of age story about a man and his dog.
He killed the friend because he took the contract and didn't kill Wick.
7:02 This might be the most exposition with the fewest words ever :D
