In this episode, we are in Italy exploring what is known as "The Green Hospital" in the exploration community. We soon find out it is not really a hospital and not that green either. Instead, it is a brutalist holiday resort built in the mountains that happens to have an infirmary.

Fun color theory fact! Hospitals use that blue/green color because eyes can become desensitized to color over long periods of time. So when doctors and nurses are spending long periods of time looking at red blood, looking at blue or green can refresh their vision of red things, including the innards of a patient during surgery. It also reduces the effects of seeing the "negatives" of the color when you stare at a white surface.
I read "Fun colour theory fact! Hospitals" and expected it to be one of those red is actually a good colour for a children's hospital jokes
@Oreo Cookie Thats exactly what I'm refering to! someone responded to the post saying red had more positive connotations in colour theory completely ignoring the fact it looks like a trail of blood in a hospital and it kinda became a meme for a while

The Architecture of the place is quite nice , the lots of natural light and the use of wood is quite good. it would have been a very modern looking place in the 70's
hehe... "lots of natural light" yeah... couple years exposed to the elements will do that....
I know beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder and it is not the worst building I've ever seen but - to be honest - I think the decay is what adds really good to that very basic brutalist architecture and makes the holiday resort pretty.
I really like this kind of architecture. I've also been playing the game Control. I liked this type of architecture before Control, but the game only made me like it more.
I've been there last year! It was a colony for children of postal administrators, here we call it ecomostro . It was part of a settlement project built to house families in the summer. Unfortunately, the institution that managed it disappeared and passed under the INPS, which decided to close it in 1997

The phone does not exactly take credit cards, there used to be cards made specifically for those phones, which had a fixed amount of money on it. That's what we used when mobiles werent available yet, i do remember using it when i was a kid, I think they've fully dismatled those phones by now.
Also, in italy schools end at beginning of june and start in september so usually children are sent to places like that till around august, when parents are on holiday too...

Same. It took a phone card that you could purchase.
Ah phone cards, remember those from my younger days, for me they where Green BT (British Telecom) cards, money on those things tended to run out quick.

You put the card in, it read the amount on it, locked the card in the slot, and when you finished your call, it would write the new amount and release the card.
Some clever people found that if you cut the card so that it only had the magnetic strip and then a section in the middle, you could insert it, wait until it locked and read the value, and then pulle the card partways out.
When the call ended it did it's write thing, but since the magnetic strip was not there, it did not write the amount.
This gave you infinite calls...Only thing was that you might need to hang up and redial, if the full amount was used up.
The telco, soon got wind of this, and just changed the procedure to "Read amount, write $0 as the amount on the card"
When the call ended, the $0 would be overwritten with the actual amount.
Anyone trying the trick after that, found that their $100 card, was empty even though they just made a $1 call :)

14:00 The pay phone doesn't take credit cards, it takes prepaid phone cards that were common throughout most of Europe in the 80s and 90s to cut down on the vandalism that coin-operated phone booths attracted.

Uncertain future? I'd be enormously surprised if this were to be repurposed at all. Being a remote location it just might not be demolished and left to rot indefinitely if the particular plot of land isn't of interest to any developer.
Maybe I just have weird taste but although I generally hate '70s style I think this building looks incredibly modern. Really looks like it could have been built in the last 5 years.
I also think the notion of summer camp is very American. In the UK we had things like Butlins which was basically a summer camp for families, like this one. It's not in the woods and in cabins. just chalets, with swimming pools, arcades and stage shows etc. I think that's more what they did here, not like cooking smores on camp fires lol
It's kind of a strange, barebones building. It reminds me of a sports resort in the Swiss town of Fiesch, where I went as a kid nearly 40 years ago. Apparently it still exists. Very simple looking buildings, plain concrete. But very spacious, and of course beautiful scenery. I have great memories of that time.
The Italian Lira currency was pretty crazy back in the days before the Euro was introduced. It was about 1700 ITL to 1 USD.

I feel like the whole "cabin ins the woods" scenario is a very american idee of summercamp. I have been a camp councelor for 8+ years here in Germany and all of them have been in youth hostels. no camping, no cabins. sometimes rurally, sometimes actually in the forest. but not always. Anyone else from a different country with summer camp styles/ locations to share?
we have these medium youth centers owned by the church, always near a big lake, accessable through short drive off the highway into the forest. There is a sauna and a pier. There is a medium cafeteria and a few medium rooms for activities, often a gravel field for games. Not the best or most memorable locations, just existing to recruit youth into a religion. They are sometimes used for grouping activity days by schools, which are somewhat enjoyable.
These summer camps are NOTHING compared to camping trips boy scouts do, those are once in a lifetime experiences in the most beautiful and magical places.
The whole episode was unusually "ignorant American". I am used to much better research from our dudes. No idea what went wrong here. As a German myself, my youth vacations have been all over the place. Tent camps at the coast, youth hostels in larger cities, boat trips across the IJsselmeer, all over the places with any type of accommodation. It was a really great time!
Where I come from...... my parents fortunately didn't send us to indoctrination camps.....
As an American who sent to summer camp, I kind of had that- out in the country side, huge property with forest and nature trail. But alot of the activities from the pool, climbing tower, arts and crafts, etc and the residental halls were in the front in a large mowed meadow with the parklot and reception. And the Halls had two wings of 30 beds apiece. Most days had as walking into the woods for canoeing on the lake back there, among other outdoor things. But it wasn't exclusvely in the forest, especially if rain or super high heat was in the forecast.
Also, if you go to any park, campground or no, there are two ways we lay them out here
1. There road and plots up to the waterfront because people love fishing, boating and swimming in the water
2. You park in a lot (relativaly) close to the main road out, with the rangers hut, nature center and WC close to the water & power main as possible. Not alot of cabins surrounded by woods, at least not for cheap.
PS- At my old summer camp there was camping area with permentaly sheltered bunk beds mini-cabins around a fire, where we (mostly) made our S'mores but that was a offered as a one night thing available for the kids who wanted too. Only a porta potty out there though so no I didn't opt for it.
The ramps were way too steep and long for wheel chair use, imagine loosing your grip on the wheel chair at the top of the ramp 😱😲

A giveaway that this wasn't a hospital is the fact the "patient rooms" don't have any medical gas outlets, nurse call buttons, etc. Every patient room, even rooms for the 70's will have a headwall with outlets, medical gas outlets, etc. It was clear when you guys found a guest room that this was something other than a hospital.

I guess when your a kid, you don't really notice that you summer camp looks like a futuristic concentration camp. I bet it was a great place to make new friends. And mom and dad got some "quality time" without kids. Anyways, thanks for yet another upload. Keep em' coming. Also, I noticed a bottle of wine, with the content and cork intact. As a wine aficionado, I would have a hard time not looking into that, might still be good if not directly exposed to sunlight.

Probably just table wine, which is not meant to be aged. The bottle with the wicker/straw woven around it is likely a cheap chianti. Also since it's upright the cork has likely dried out and allowed air in oxidizing the wine into vinegar. Might be nice drizzled into olive oil with some good focaccia to dip into it!

yeah in europe summer camps are more like dorms. Some buildings are designed almost like motels, some others more like hostels (more people cramedinto one rrom amd all facilities are communal)
The cabin/tent type camps are usually more for scouts or if you go to a camp that is specifically for camping.
I am guessing this resorts housed several different groups of kis who would circulate in the building in rows of 2. Ramps are more efficient than stairs for this (but take more space)
Modern for the 70s! That still looks pretty modern! Even the desks look like the minimalist style that's in now a days! So cool
The ramps are much better and safer for mass foot traffic
14:18 this kind of phone, named "Rotor" was common from the late 80s until 2000-2002. It was able to accept both coins and cards who were very popular and frequently illustrated for marketing or institutional purpose. As i grew up in the 90s, i remember the smell of cigarettes and the large amount of syringes left in phone cabins when the heroin epidemic was at its peak. Strange times.
The whole of Italy takes their national holiday in August, so the parents send the children to have a holiday in the hotel like a Summer camp

It could also be 'hospital' in the hospitality sense of the word. In medieval times, the word hospital meant a place of hospitality, often on the routes of travellers attending religious pilgrimages. Great video, guys!
I am from italy and the money write in the sheets was in lire so i can convert in € for you it start from around 200 to 400€ to 600 to 800€ for each children, pretty expansive considered that the structure is from back in the seventy

Thinking the ramps were just so large amounts of kids could move from floor to floor? More so than an elevator or stairway???
Safer in general if you have the space to build them. I doubt anyone has tripped and died falling down a ramp. I'd take ramps over stairs any day.
I really like the last scene in the corridor. Looks like a shadow fleeing the quit solitude of the place and leaving the child screams as a vague souvenir of the past. The music is very appropriate for this moment.

Hi from Toronto Canada. This has got to be the weirdest camp ever. Best kind of decay is natural. Weird place. Views out the windows are really nice. Beautiful scenery. Wonder if there was a gym , pool. Why and when it closed. Thanks for taking us with you.
if you're from Toronto you may have been to Bonye River as part of the TDSB which had buildings of similar construction.

If you are still in Italy by any chance there is a large abandoned psychiatric hospital in Volterra called "the place of no return". Also there is an abandoned Bugatti factory. Seen both whilst in Italy and just thought they would be great for your channel if you get the chance!

I loved your Cathedral video. I love the secret lookout windows looking down on the congregation from the little rooms. My other favorite type of videos are your European videos. It gives a nice different perspective from a European human standpoint which is very different in some ways and similar in others. Also, the building are many times older than American buildings

Absolutely. There is so many beautiful abandoned places that get covered in graffiti. Like sometimes I think graffiti can be pretty but should only be put on certain places and not places like this
I take it neither of you have ever been to Italy, I am Italian and our cities have tons more graffiti than any American one....this place might just be too out of reach

The Proper People are my spirit animal. They explore the places I never could, but I feel their experiences as close as I had been there. First of all thanx guys! Very nice photography! All in all I deem it quite a nice piece of 70s architecture. Only the size of it seems massive, especially when you think of the huge numbers of kids there in the summer... not very intimate!!
However I ask myself, why it was abandoned, probably all of the sudden...
Also it's too bad for the kitchen and other expensive stuff that coud have been used by other people in need...

It was a holiday retreet for kids of postal workers according to research I have done I might visit when I move there later this year!
Come to England to Redcar steelworks where the steel that was used to build the Sydney harbour bridge was made. Its due to be demolished very soon. Its huge with alsorts of machines and equipment

Places like that were typically owned by the church or by big industrial companies like FIAT back in the 70s.
In Italy most companies actually close down for a month in the summer and people from the city travel to the coast and mountains to get fresh air and relax etc...it's nothing shady or mysterious lol
