The Kirin are from Chinese mythology actually. They are the Chinese version of unicorns. The Nirik are original to MLP, but it's just Kirin spelled backwards.
Autumn Blaze is precious and wonderful and precious and adorable and have I mentioned precious yet? She must be protected and hugged and cared for

NIGHTMARE
The Kiren are Chinese based mythological creatures. My first exposure to the Kiren was in a anime series called the 12 kingdoms where they choose the Emperor/Empress of one of 12 kingdoms. In that series, they are extremely pure beings, and they could only bow to their Emperor. They also cannot be around spilled blood because of the fact that they are pure beings. And only one Kiren is born, who, then go on to choose the Emperor of the nation, and when the ruler dies, they can then go on to choose another, however, if the Kiren dies, then the kings/Emperor will die very shortly after as the two are linked. Also, the one chosen to be Emperor/king is immortal so long as they rule. Well if they don’t rule well then the Kiren will sicken and die. At least according to the law of the anime, the 12 kingdoms.
How much of what the 12 kingdoms tells us as lore, if it’s true based on the mythology or not, I don’t know. The author of the 12th kingdoms, Has been known as the Tolkien of the east.
In case no one has brought up how close they got kirin to the sources, and what the source versions are like, from what I recall and a glance at wikipedia, kirin [Japanese] aka qilin [Chinese] were cloven-hooved quadrupeds similar in form to oxen, deer, or horses--hence pony version, with one of Celestial stature! At least partially scaled, yet with flowing manes & beards, often with 1-2 antlers like Chinese dragons or horns like Western unicorns, many times with fluffy tufts of fur and/or partly on fire. Some depictions have fire-breath or other flame powers among their arsenal, but most all are unwaveringly and unerringly on the side of good, unwilling to harm the innocent but defend them from attack by evil, and so wise as to be valued in even the Celestial courts for their ability to know the guilty from the innocent.
Also sightings often line up with the birth and/or passing of great people. I suppose this episode was fairly close to the first time Celestia & Luna tried to install Twilight in their stead in the S9 opening 2-parter? And as I recall, Autumn Blaze if not also others attended Twilight's coronation in the final episode's flashback story! =>_^=
