I've had both lenses for my 70D for the past couple years. They're amazing. Warning: The 50-100 is an absolute beast of a lens in terms of it's weight. I'm sure the 18-35 is like 800 grams which many people consider heavy'ish but since I use the 50-100 about 80% of the time going back to the 18-35 feels like i'm carrying a feather. The heavy weight of the 50-100 doesn't bother me but some people might struggle with it for long shoots. I do find that my focussing can be off a little bit but I'm not experienced enough to know if that's my error, the camera or the lens. Perhaps with modern cameras that have eye af it won't be a problem. The only two lenses you need on aps-c.
Just a few suggestions. Use the lens shade; it'll help combat your image getting washed in situations where there's bright specular light just out of frame. Also while holding an SLR, you can be much steadier by turning your non-grip hand 180 degrees (so your thumb is pointing away from the center of your body), hand horizontal like you're holding a tiny serving tray, body of the camera resting in your palm, fingers around the barrel and elbow braced against your torso. It might feel weird at first, but it's considerably more stable; look at how pros hold their camera. It also puts your fingers in a position to manually focus while holding the camera steady.
Beautiful photos! Location, model and the actual shots. I’m seriously thinking of getting t sigma 18-35 for my canon 80d. In some groups people had said portrait is where the lens doesn’t do well but safe to say you proved them wrong.
just bought my new camera, photography was just my hobby but now im getting clients for photoshoot and im not even that good, but because of Julia i'm trying my best, thank you for being an inspiration.
I used the same kit like Julia did for quite awhile and I did tried before with the 80d, I totally recommend this two lens to be a match. Autofocus never failed me throughout many events and weddings. But if your canon has dpaf, definitely maximise these two lens and your camera by shooting via liveview. CA is a problem but you can remove them in lightroom. Shot video with them and my only complain is either sigma didn’t put ILIS or Canon doesn’t have IBIS. Now using them as my second camera and still recommend ppl that don’t mind apsc to get this as a matching gear
I’ve never clicked on a video so fast! The 18-35 f1.8 is by far my favourite cropped sensor lens. I gave my Canon 16-35 f2.8 II away as I kept comparing it to the Sigma. I tend to take two cameras with me for landscapes so I can use this lens with my filters. I do think time spent on the Sigma Hub is time well invested with their Art and Sports lenses. A great video, thank you.
I have the 18-35 mm one and I'm loving it! Yes it misses focus a lot, like 40-50% of the time when using the viewfinder, especially when you're not focusing it on the center. But you can fix it by using the live view! I have never had an issue with focusing when using the live view. I really want to get a hand on the 50-100 mm like it's the 80-160 mm f2.8 equivalent on the full frame! How good is that?
that why i prefer manual focus regime ;) so my sort answer is only manual regime for all cameras and lens, only with exertion if you have A9, and may be A6300 or A7 III if you are agree with only 10 frames per second.
She has such a beautiful smile, her whole face lights up, but soon as you lift the camera to shoot the contemplative melancholy look comes back 😃 Nice review, but honestly you can make any lens/camera look good
The 18-35 1.8 is a perfect lens for low light indoor events. Bars, pubs, birthday parties, etc. Lively scenes, where you often need a speedlight. You can really keep the speedlights power down and your photos will look very natural but still crisp. Also street photography at night. I call mine The Owl (Sounds more beatiful in my language though). :-) I belive there are more suitable lenses fot shooting in bright daylight when there are lots of contrast and chromatic aberration is easy to appear.
The images look very good. My first dslr was eos 400D, then I got 7D and last year the 7Dii. The 7Dii is a great camera and mated to the sigma Art lenses or canon L the results are fantastic. It is an underrated camera. Though it is the one of most popular cameras with amateurs. IMO canon need to release a firmware update to keep it current. But they will not so you have to buy a new body like the over priced eos R or RP !
I’m renting this lens for upcoming Mother’s Day family portraits outdoor & at the studio as well as senior photos, do we think this will preform well? I’m a beginner of 2 years!😊
I open your videos and click like asap. I'm SO SO SO happy to see you use this lens (18-35). It is one of my fav crop zoom lenses and maybe the best lens I have, even adapted to my Sony a6500. I bought it originally for my Canon crop, which i've sold, but it is so good I've adapted it for my Sony. It is heavy, but does amazing work! Not a fan of the 50-100...too much CA and it looked like it missed focus A LOT!
I'm actually thinking of getting both of these lenses. The image looked great and to be honest, I thought the sigma zoom looked sharper than the 50mm you compared but maybe it's just me.
If you want to nail the focus you have to play around with your camera's focus system to find out what will work fine in sigma 50-100, in my nikon if I want AF-S mode I have to increase the aperture value to 2.8f and if I want to use 1.8f I will change my focusing mode to AF-C Dynamic Area D25.
If I was a full time crop frame shooter, I would definitely have this lens in my kit! I'm also curious as to what you replaced it with when you switched to full frame :) I'm guessing maybe a 24-70?
@@juliatrotti I usually shoot fashion photography and replaced it with a 16-35 2.8. But I'm not very pleased with it. I can't really get passed the the black circle around the edges of the photograph when i shoot full frame with the sigma 18-35
I know it's such a shame! These zooms had much better focus accuracy though compared to my Sigma 24mm 1.4 which alwayyssss back focuses so I don't use it much anymore!
Dan's a pro. Video looks fantastic as always. I did realize I like a wider angle when watching you work. It gives a better perspective on your surroundings throughout the shoot. No complaints though! Was super cool to see you testing lenses and sensor with which I have personal experience. These lenses are spectacular. I did tons of research before I bought them. And I found a UA-cam vid that had the proper settings for my 18-35 via Sigma dock. The 50-100 was fortunately already sharp as hell. Downside as you know is the 50-100 is a straight up brick. I got a fancy ifootage monopod to use with it and I still wasn't encouraged to actually use the thing. So then I bought the Sigma 50mm to keep me company until I have the patience to try it out again. I know I'll love it once I get use to the heft. Thank-you for delving into aps-c for us. I was considering f1.2- f1.4 primes before, but I think you may have changed my mind and made me realize what I have now is good enough :)
Thanks so much! If I was a full time crop frame shooter I would seriously have this and like an 85mm in my kit, it's such a great zoom lens! And yeah I definitely feel like I got a little arm workout with that 50-100 haha
I've learned so much from watching your videos I just have one question you might have covered this but do you use manual or auto focus primarily for portraits?
You should try the sigma18-35mm on a full frame body at 35mm at around f2, you will be shocked! It will probably make you want to sell your full frame 35 prime.
For best results on sigma 18-35 f.8 remove the uv filter u had on the lens and attach the lens hood it came with.....then it will perform its best in such high contrast scenarios....
I actually like to shoot without a lens hood for a more washed out back lit look, it also gives a better indication of how a lens/camera can focus in harsher situations like that :)
Awesome review and liking how you're reviewing more affordable crop size camera. I have the 7d mark2 and shooting live view is actually pretty good in nailing focus with the face detection.
Thank you Julia for guiding me to this video of your shoot with the 18-35mm, f1.8 lens. I was mistakingly under the impression that the 18-35mm lens, (even on a crop sensor camera) would cause too much distortion. I am so glad you set me straight on that misconception! Am I correct to assume that you would use this lens for portraiture at the 23 "ish" to 35mm range? I loved the shots you took of your model and the detail shown! I guess I won't need an 85mm lens for awhile! Thanks again!
So glad you liked it! Since this is a crop lens the widest end of 18mm actually has a field of view of roughly 28mm, which is a little bit wide for portraits but you can get some nice results there. Then anything more zoomed in than that works really well for portraits too :)
@@juliatrotti I plan to use it tonight to play with portraiture of a plastic model head. Unfortunately I don't have a lovely, live model to photograph but then the plastic model head will be very patient and won't get tired of posing while I try different things to get the shot right! LOL
Great Julia 👌👌👌👌 I have already canon m 50 mirorless crop sensor With a 50 mm lens .. I wanna change to 18 .35 coz i need wider shot with blury background Do you advise me ? To buy it ? 🌹
The 18-35 Sig must be calibrated to your camera for optimal AF through the view finder. This can be done with their dock for $50. Its takes a few hours to do but its pretty simple. Or you can send the camera and the lens to sigma for calibration.
I can only recommendto really consider it. I bought this lens like 1 1/2 years ago, used it once and never packed it again.... sold it after just 2 months. It was too impractical, even if images are fine.
It really depends on what you shoot! If I was a full time crop sensor shooter, I would have this lens for all my travels and portrait shoots as well, it has a great range that I love working with!
@@juliatrotti well, for me it was as heavy as my travel kit consisting of 2 zooms and 1 prime. Plus if I used it i wouldn't want to carry my camera in my hand anymore.
Nice! I feel like the 18-35 is more versatile anyway and then if you want a more portrait/bokeh style lens you can always go for a 50 or 85 which would be a nice compliment to this lens!
It might be only me, but as you mentioned the make-up more so in this video than usual, I was wondering if you would consider making a video on the type of makeup looks you prefer to shoot these natural portraits with? Maybe asking Lidija to share some general tips with us? 😊
Thanks for the review. I shoot the Canon 80D with a Sigma 18-35 1.8 and the Sigma 70-200 2.8 Sport. Am thinking of eventually adding the 50-100 1.8 to my arsenal to fill the gap. The 18-35 is an amazing lens that is perfect for a photographer like me that shoots various subjects such as landscape, portraits and astrophotography. Well worth the cost when you factor in all the uses you get from it.
@@CyberPunkSimms it's a great lens. Solid build, little heavier and has weather seal. Worth it IMO. I am not looking at the 150-600 sport for my wildlife work as the 70-200 doesn't have the reach I would like.
@@CyberPunkSimms yeah the 150 to 600 sport has the weather ceiling and the body's made out of metal instead of plastic and few more elements of glass. Other than that about the same. But seeing that I take my gear into spots and weather that requires the seals I always go higher end.
@@CalTek ah, so are you still using the 80d? Also, a thing I've noticed with my 150-600mm is that focusing is a little strange with my 90d. (I am a new photographer though.)
Crop sensor camera here, I need help with a buying decision... I mostly do Portrait and I'm just getting into the Business kinda. Should I get; the sigma 24mm f1.4 + the 30mm f1.4 for around 850€ or this sigma 18-35mm f1.8 for like 640€? I have the canon 50mm f1.8 (which on a crop sensor is like the 85) and a 24mm f2.8 (which on a crop sensor is like the 35). I have a Engagement Party shooting coming up and I need something to handle the dim lights without too much noise and I also want to get into 'nighttime' photography more...
I'm on a 7d mark i body...should I upgrade on the mark ii or go for a mirrorless..like r6 II or Sony a7iv??🤔..what's your thoughts (considering I want to shoot both photos and videos)
Ah I know, I didn't realise until I was editing the photos that I didn't get too many shots on the zoomed in end! I'm so used to shooting at wider focal lengths that I only got that one closeup at 100mm :(
Thank you! I definitely have a LOT of back focusing issues on my Sigma 24mm f1.4 to the point where I can't even use it much anymore. But the 18-35 didn't back focus, only missed focus when the wind and back light was getting a little crazy, no CA either. The 50-100 was back focusing a little more and defs a lot more CA as you could see in the video 😊
@@juliatrotti I got the Sigma art 35mm for Sony emount when it came out & sent it back sadly after a month ..& bought the Sony 28mm instead which I LOVE....
I thought the sigma DC lens didn't fit on a full frame and only on crop? I have a crop sensor, should I still buy the sigma DC lens? Will it work on a full frame if I invest in that later?
I personally would try to futureproof as best you can if you are to get a full frame down the line. But, on the other hand the 18-35mm f1.8 is soooo good.
I want to get myself one of these 2 lenses but I can't decide which one, they look both great for me but I can only afford one of them so which one would you pick?
I can’t make up my mind between the 50-100mm or the 70-200mm f2.8 canon Which the 70-200mm may be the best and most quality lens that distance on a crop camera may be alil to much for portrait This is where the 50-100mm comes in to give me that telephoto compression But I can’t put up with the purple fridgin
This video is giving me an incredibly hard time about which lens to buy for my 90D first. I can only afford one lens at the moment, not both (and I want both, each for a specific purpose!) Edit: Got the 18-35. As a guy who had no clue he loves photography more than videography, I have my own regrets
Yep, it focused well straight out of the box. Unfortunately I think that's just a quality control issue with Sigma unfortunately :( I have the 24mm 1.4 which back focuses SO much that I can't use it anymore, I even tried readjusting it but it didn't end up helping.
@@juliatrotti good to know. I also tried doing that but my calibration software (Reikan Focal) was telling me the lens had a mind of it's own. I gave up, but it was enough to prevent me from purchasing it or any other Sigma lens
Okay but why does she have perfect freckle placement 😫
Cause its fake
Nice to see more content on the Sigma zooms, especially the 50-100mm. I think that lens doesn’t have enough coverage and is worth looking at

I was thinking about upgrading to full frame, but those lenses changed my mind.
lol - same here :D
Awesome review and liking how you're reviewing more affordable crop size camera. I have the 7d mark2 and shooting live view is actually pretty good in nailing focus with the face detection.
Thank you! It's been really fun shooting on the 7D2 recently, it's a great camera!
@@juliatrotti You're awesome and pretty :-)
I just got the z50 and was thinking about selling the 16-50 kit lens it comes with to fund this sigma 18-35 1.8 lens. Do you think thats a good idea ?
LOL
Great Julia 👌👌👌👌
I have already canon m 50 mirorless crop sensor
With a 50 mm lens ..
I wanna change to 18 .35 coz i need wider shot with blury background
Do you advise me ? To buy it ? 🌹
Nice video and nice photo i like sigma lenses but ihave't it yet what abut 50-100 mm f1,8 for nikon D7200 🙏
The 18-35 Sig must be calibrated to your camera for optimal AF through the view finder. This can be done with their dock for $50. Its takes a few hours to do but its pretty simple. Or you can send the camera and the lens to sigma for calibration.
I hear a lot about CA, but it really doesn't bother me. Great video! I'm inspired to get out and shoot again.
Yeah for photo it's at least easy to fix CA with Lightroom, for video that would be a different story!
Great futage keep up the good work 👍😀
Lovely model.
18-35 its the next lens i am going to buy, thanx for the Review Julia. Grattings from México
I'm saving up for the 18-35mm f/1.8. The 50-100mm f1.8 is worth my entire life, so that's out of the question.
That sounds like a really fun idea!
Julia Can you please redo this video with Canon R7 and these two Sigma lenses?
Thanks for the review. I shoot the Canon 80D with a Sigma 18-35 1.8 and the Sigma 70-200 2.8 Sport. Am thinking of eventually adding the 50-100 1.8 to my arsenal to fill the gap.
The 18-35 is an amazing lens that is perfect for a photographer like me that shoots various subjects such as landscape, portraits and astrophotography. Well worth the cost when you factor in all the uses you get from it.
Looking at getting the 70-200mm f2.8 sport. It's more than half the price of canon's equivalent:)
@@CyberPunkSimms it's a great lens. Solid build, little heavier and has weather seal. Worth it IMO.
I am not looking at the 150-600 sport for my wildlife work as the 70-200 doesn't have the reach I would like.
@@CalTek I have a 150-600mm Contemporary haha, went for that one as I saw little difference specs wise between that and the sport.
Great shoot! I would looove to see you shoot with the bokeh monster sigma 105mm 😀
These are amazing!
The friendliest hey everyone in history of hey everyone! I love it xD
Really looking at getting this sigma 18-35 for my gh5 using an adapter, only draw back is heavy to travel almost a KG
I'm on a 7d mark i body...should I upgrade on the mark ii or go for a mirrorless..like r6 II or Sony a7iv??🤔..what's your thoughts (considering I want to shoot both photos and videos)
Pleaseeeeeee shoot on the canon 80d!!
The 50-100 1.8 is currently my favorite lens BUT the back focusing issue makes me hesitant to use it sometimes
No wonder this lens is mostly sold with the USB dock as a bundle on b&h photo.
Nice video I have a question regarding crop magnification. If you were to use a 50mm designed for full frame would you have to multiply it by 1.6?
yes
Have you tried that 50-100 on a crop sony with the mc11 adapter ? ALOT OF PEOPLE would love to see that review.
Not yet but I would love to try it! I'll shoot this next time :)
Cuteness overloaded 😍
shooting with this maximum aperture at 1.8, does it have any advantage over blur?
I wished there were more sample shots at the 80-100mm end
Ah I know, I didn't realise until I was editing the photos that I didn't get too many shots on the zoomed in end! I'm so used to shooting at wider focal lengths that I only got that one closeup at 100mm :(
such beautiful images.... i found sigma lenses are bad for CA & back focusing.. but good optics..
Also, yeah. The 18-35mm f1.8 sigma, will not work on a full frame, well not very well at 18mm.
I want to get myself one of these 2 lenses but I can't decide which one, they look both great for me but I can only afford one of them so which one would you pick?
18-35 is more versatile as an everyday lens as it's a full frame equivalent of 28-55 on crop bodies.
I'd recommend the 18-35mm f1.8 for the wide angles.
I can’t make up my mind between the 50-100mm or the 70-200mm f2.8 canon
Which the 70-200mm may be the best and most quality lens that distance on a crop camera may be alil to much for portrait
This is where the 50-100mm comes in to give me that telephoto compression
But I can’t put up with the purple fridgin
This video is giving me an incredibly hard time about which lens to buy for my 90D first. I can only afford one lens at the moment, not both (and I want both, each for a specific purpose!)
Edit: Got the 18-35. As a guy who had no clue he loves photography more than videography, I have my own regrets
You should try at focal 100mm on full body :(
Hi Julia. Did the lens focus precisely straight out of the box? I rented the 18-35 one and it was appaling, hit or miss constantly
