    They really were an underrated car. The 3.5 V6 is a great smooth engine.

    One tip: when removing the stud nuts on the plenum chamber, be especially careful not to drop them. I dropped the passenger-side one, and it fell into an almost inaccessible spot between the two tappet covers. After half-an-hour of searching for it, I was lucky to locate it by feel with a telescopic magnetic pick-up. Otherwise, this was an easy job. Don't follow the Gregory's workshop manual which says that you have to dump the coolant in order to remove the plenum chamber.

      Must I add that anyone who attempts this MUST take their time doing so for your own safety and the cars safety too!!!
      Nothing worse than anything metal going down in the cylinders and...BANG!!! Goodbye engine

    Great video Gav! I'll need this while I'm traveling around the coast, pretty sure the TW V6 is pretty much the exact same? Now I know why the receipts for the services I got with my car were so expensive. This was a technical process for such a small intention! Cheers again. Please keep us updated and make some more videos on upkeep with this vehicle.

      I done this on my own. Took apart and put together. MAXIMUM TIME... 3 HOURS. No power tools. Just good old fashioned manual handling tools
      Best apart in the end was
      1. Self accomplishment
      2. NO LABOUR CHARGE!!!😂😂😂
      I know it looks nerve racking to do as it looks complex but trust me. If you break it down one by one, it actually gets easier. Just take your time looking around the spark plug area and you'll see it's a big job but it's not that bad

    Great tutorial Gav. Im glad you've helped the world with this wonderful car. I learned alot after watching it as I tried all this. Beautiful!!!
    Is it necessary, however that sealant and spare manifold gaskets to be changed and used!!!

    • @gavsshed_7393
      @gavsshed_7393  Рік тому

      You just need to make sure that there are no air leaks in the manifold as your air intake needs to be measured properly by the computer.

    Gav what condition was the intake gasket like? Did you replace it at the same time or was it clean enough to reuse. Knowing full well how gunked up the Magna upper intakes can get.

      Ratel.H Badger I had a VRS set for this car so I replaced the gasket. The original metal gaskets seem to do well and I have re-used them without any problems also.

    These are 'big breathing' engines.. the intake plenum tubes and the lower intake port tubes are MASSIVE for an engine of this capacity, owing to it's direct engine base lineage from the mighty twin turbo GTO 3000 6G72DETT.
    When Mitsubishi brought out the bigger 380 (3,828cc) the intake ports are substantially SMALLER on this later engine.
    Smaller diameter runners equals peak torque at lower rpm and a reduced capacity to produce higher power at around 6,000rpm.
    So, the Magna 3.5 is a VERY tunable engine and can put out a LOT of usable power with just a few simple enough tweaks.
    The 380 3.8 not so much.

    • @gavsshed_7393
      @gavsshed_7393  Рік тому

      Yes, from what I hear,the 3.8 has more lower torque rather than rev. The 3.5 will rev more freely. I ported the heads in the 2002 manual I had. It was a fun engine.

    You wouldn't think a Australian built car has so much work involved just to change spark plugs as bugger me would a mechanic really do all of this during servicing them ??.

    • @gavsshed_7393
      @gavsshed_7393  6 років тому +3

      Darryl Bavington , good thing platinum plugs are good for 100,000km hey... Actually the AC Denso plugs I used are supposed to be good for 160,000km.
      I've been charged for a four hour service for that job on a V6 Toyota Camry in the past.

      I just brought a 1997 Mitsubishi Verada ei 3.5lt with 190,000 on the clock and I must say they are a great car to drive so I will be replacing the spark plugs with the help of your video. Thanks Darryl

      @@darrylbavington726 I've got a '97 also. Such a pain to change the rear plugs, may as well spend the extra coin and get the Iridium tips, so you only have to replace them once.

    Hi there, what if the spark plug well has been flooded with the oil? Do I need to remove valve cover to get rid of the oil? And why it has happened? What need to do to fix the problem? Thank you.

    Are the back spark plugs the same as the front 3?

    My tj has 266k on the clock, any ideas as to why it is missing when at idle. Just changed the spark plugs and gaskets associated. It runs and has great performance and normal and high speeds but come idle it misses not all the time when at idle. Fuel system is spotless use 98 octane bought it 2003 single owner. Can you assist. Steve

    my mates got one of these is going to get another car because the mechanic told him you have to take the engine out to change the plugs , thought it was a bit extreme and overkill .

    its not that bad to to this job , the secret is to go to rockauto in the us and get the iridium plugs for 2 $ each, i buy all my magna / diamante parts from them
    i got air filter/fuel filters for 2-3 dollars each, even suspension parts and 02 sensors are ½ the price here in 0z, waterpump and timing kits, with tensioner/belts /idlers are ¼ the price we pay here in australia

    • @ThePaulv12
      @ThePaulv12 3 роки тому +1

      I just checked. Some parts are really cheap some not so much. Premium timing kit is A$296 which isn't that much cheaper than the Dayco $377 I found on eBay with *everything*. Some things are cheap though - Bosch dist cap A$11, here $140 Ffffar out!
      Premium iridium plugs ~$30 cheaper for the set and HT leads $25 cheaper. Here's the thing, assuming they send the right stuff it's all fine, but the moment some goose puts the wrong thing in the box you're DP'd on a) import duty possibly x2 and b) return freight.
      Good cross reference for part #s though. I appreciate the comment and have bookmarked it.
      Cheers!

    Thanks for the video. Is it possible to change the spark plug HT leads in the future without taking the intake manifold off like you have to with the plugs ? It would be a shame if you couldn't but chose not to replace them when you had the manifold off.

    Is that the 3.8?

    • @gavsshed_7393
      @gavsshed_7393  5 років тому

      It's the 3.5, I expect the 3.8 would be much the same except the 3.8 will have coil packs that will need removal. I haven't had a 3.8 to work on.

    I have a turbo 240z no problems changing plugs on that ..but my magna ....?😳

    Also MUST make sure anyone who watches this that the SPARK PLUG LEADS GO BACK IN THE RIGHT ORDER THAT THEY WERE FOUND IN!!!
    Failure to do so will result in misfires and starting issues. This is called THE FIRING ORDER.
    Hope I was helpful to anyone taking up this wonderful dirty hands hobby 😊👍
