V6 Magna Timing Belt change 6g74 (also 6g72 and 6g75)
Переглядів 18 тис.5 років тому
Hopefully this video will give some idea of what is involved in a timing belt change. This will take most DIY people about a day to complete. No special tools required apart from a socket set and a 14mm ring spanner. I admit the video is a bit choppy, there were a few issues with my editing skills and editing laptop.

    My 01 v6 Magna auto was running perfectly and just decided to stop driving can't select any gears? Funny tho, 5 days ago I went to drive out of the driveway and nothing... jiggled all the plugs from auto and cleaned them & it worked fine for 5 days now nothing? Great gearbox with no flare up during shifting. This manual conversion looks awesome. If it's not a solidod or control unit in my auto i may do this? Are cv's different?

      Sounds like the wave spring issue with your transmission. It would be very likely if you drained the fluid you would have short lengths, 15mm long, of wave spring. I bought an 02 model cheap once because the previous owner stopped at a roundabout, and when he went to go again he had no gears. The CV shaft on one side is shorter than the other by a few mm. I think it is the passenger side. I used both shafts from the passenger side.

      Thanks for the reply Gav! Today I got car on stands and wheels off and inner left guard panels off to see any wires I've missed which I haven't. I was revving engine on the stands and now I'm hearing something very small rattling about only when I rev the engine. So tomorrow I'll get the car level & drain fluid. I have had 6 Magnas and not 1 has left me on roadside until now. I still love Magnas

    These are 'big breathing' engines.. the intake plenum tubes and the lower intake port tubes are MASSIVE for an engine of this capacity, owing to it's direct engine base lineage from the mighty twin turbo GTO 3000 6G72DETT. When Mitsubishi brought out the bigger 380 (3,828cc) the intake ports are substantially SMALLER on this later engine. Smaller diameter runners equals peak torque at lower rpm and a reduced capacity to produce higher power at around 6,000rpm. So, the Magna 3.5 is a VERY tunable engine and can put out a LOT of usable power with just a few simple enough tweaks. The 380 3.8 not so much.

    • @gavsshed_7393
      @gavsshed_7393 Рік тому

      Yes, from what I hear,the 3.8 has more lower torque rather than rev. The 3.5 will rev more freely. I ported the heads in the 2002 manual I had. It was a fun engine.

    One tip: when removing the stud nuts on the plenum chamber, be especially careful not to drop them. I dropped the passenger-side one, and it fell into an almost inaccessible spot between the two tappet covers. After half-an-hour of searching for it, I was lucky to locate it by feel with a telescopic magnetic pick-up. Otherwise, this was an easy job. Don't follow the Gregory's workshop manual which says that you have to dump the coolant in order to remove the plenum chamber.

    Hi Gav, great video thanks. I've just finished doing the timing belt, pulleys, hydraulic tensioner and water pump on my 2003 Magna TL. The car has only 84k on the clock, but the manual says to replace the belt every 100k or 5 years, so I figured I should do it after 20 years! As it was, the old timing belt looked as good as new. The job took 1.5 days on the weekend, taking it slow. A long 17mm socket is almost a necessity for removing two nuts on the engine mount. A rattle gun made short work of the crankshaft bolt. Fortunately the crankshaft pulley just slipped off. Just for interest the belt has 195 teeth on an 8mm pitch, and there are 63 teeth from one camshaft to the other, and 66 teeth from each camshaft to the right edge of the keyway slot when at TDC. I would recommend marking the positions of the camshafts and crankshaft on the old belt before removal (a dot of nail polish works well). You can transfer these marks to the new belt, and it speeds installation. Also, I made the special tool for setting the tension pulley rotation - this is worth doing since it allows you to set the belt tension perfectly so that the hydraulic tensioner moves out by the right amount. If you have the belt too lose, the tensioner will come out too far - possibly leading to a loose belt down the track - and it will be difficult to push back. For reference, the locating holes in the tensioner pulley are 3.35mm in diameter and 14.00mm apart and 9.32mm from the centre; you apply the torque 18mm from the centre; a 3kg spring balance and a spanner will make a suitable torque wrench. Perhaps this is overkill, but it made the tension adjustment very quick and accurate. Rather than making the tool, you can buy it, or you might be able to make do with a pair of circlip pliers.
