- Tribute to the late great Carlton "Carly" Barrett.
The raw drum track off of Bob Marley and the Wailers "Lively Up Yourself" from the album Natty Dread. Recorded in 1973 at Harry J Studio, Kingston, Jamaica. If like me you love the unique drumming style of Carly Barrett then this is gold dust. I spent many an hour trying to copy Carly's unique one drop style - here it is, up front and crystal clear. Percussion in the background is by Alvin "Seeco" Patterson.
Best reggae drummer ever. rhythm tight and right.
When this drum hits you feel no pain! 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍
The heart beat of the Wailers
His style still why he my fav reggae drummer all time
with his brother Aston on bass the best ridim section of Jamaica for years.
he and his brother also wrote the songs Talkin blues , Who the cap fit , War and Rebel music
No they didn't write any song, it's only bob who was the producer of the wailers, but I man know that there is a story telling that the Barrett wrote some song for bob, but they didn't.
RIP beloved master drummer. Your musical talent will live on forever. One ❤ always
Carly was a brilliant musician and arguably the greatest drummer of all time.
Arguably
The greatest drummer of his genre for sure 👍🏼
Snare head sounds like its about to pop, fill master, mostly kick and snare....magic
he unengaged the snare cause it to sound like a timbal
Mr. Carlton Barrett was one of the greatest reggae drummer ever! In my humble opinion. His reggae drum beats was so awesome. RIP Carlton Barrett and Bob Marley LEGEND !
Word!!!!
What a drummer mannn👑 rest up Carly 👑
One of the top, best of all times, of all styles.
Father of the one drop!
Speaks Dapallo Carlton Barrett used Ludwig drumset. That is one of the best brand of drums on the market.
I completely agree! I use to have a Ludwig... I have a dw now
@@withoutwallsministers3703 I have also seen Carlton Barrett using Yamaha drums in the late 1970's and the 1980's even after Bob Marley passed away.
@@Hotters9060 Yep. Yamaha was the only brand that offered him a free kit for touring.
@@freddysanfilipo7395 Oh yes!! That is correct. Carlton Barrett said it himself in an interview that he couldn't turn down an offer like that in Japan when the Wailers had a huge concert over there.
If you sit back and analyze, he isn't doing much. But it makes a whole lot of difference listening to the song as a whole. Just the right fills in the right places.
That's true musicianship, having the ear to know just what to add.
agree. should have put the audio of the singer far away at the background and also the part of the saxophone lead
Less is more. It’s the way the music is allowed to breathe and hang in the air that makes it so magical.
Perfectly described/observed. I am not a musician, and do not play any instruments, but it really is unbelievable how much this individually adds to the other elements in the song, the members of this band have my absolute respect as artists.
NOBODY IN THE WORLD CAN DO IT NO MATTER HOW MUCH IT IS SO SIMPLE XD
Amazing! What a mile wide groove. So solid yet never like a machine. Such superlative feel and taste. Thanks.
Great work this brings Carly back to life. RIP Carly you serve your purpose
Magic. Such a trance.
LEGENDS never dies !!! He is one of them...
Unbelievable. Absolutely magnificent. How can someone even do this?
doing it, I guess it is actually not complicated, what´s actually genius was creating/coming up with it from scratch.
Amazing, truly...always took Bob's vibe to a surreal level.
Can't beat that snare. 1970s Ludwig supra 🔥 even gives a tone with a side stick
Can't have enough of it.
Excellent!!!
Simplicity in a song always produces magic.
It sounds like when you bounce a very bouncy basketball
Carlton... The legend !
This changed my drumming life like nothing else.
The precision disguises the pace. It sounds simple but this is meticulous metronomic mastery.
This is great stuff. The Field Marshall!!
Thanks for sharing.
One drop King 👑
It’s the many so- called “OFF- BEATS “ for me! So unique!
It seems effortless! The variety! #Lovesign #OneOfAKind
This is Aweeeee Awesome
So precise. Incredible!
'Cause reggae is another bag! The best!
A lot of variations and shuffles. Excellent Reggae Drum genius 👌
Pure Gold
Just beautiful. Yes aye Jah!!!!!!
My fave kit drummer ever 😺✨
Genius 🇯🇲🥁🎶
just 100% sublime, the best
Yeah!!! This track is gold!!! Thank you very much. Now I can imagine how the real roots rock reggae is played in drums.
Lovely! More please.
If anyone who thinks this is plain or boring just remember this is only the studio version (where they play it with simplicity in order to try & get play time on radio stations; but not just for that reason alone).
Happy earth strong.. blessed love in heaven
The best. Unbeatable.
literally :)))
Amazing
maestro.....
The best!!!
He looked like the quiet but kind favorite uncle every Black family has.
Adorei
Maravilhoso
YEAH JAH DRUMS
The MASTER
The boss 🔥🥰
Sax and Carlton Barrett's the great drum
Muito talentoso
If you listen to them belly full this guy goes in best one drop drummer
Tasty!!!!!!!!!!
Mestre
Cette caisse clair... fiouu *-*
To all the UA-camrs forget about these drummers post
Ing videos in I how to Play reggae Just listen and study the Master Here AS A drummer myself it grieves me to hear drummers watering down Carly to a stiff One Drop Rhythm Watch him on the Videos go out reason with the drummers in your city doing it The ones who tour through your city Stop watching those ridiculous videos
Junior Richards There is nothing like the original style of Carlton Barrett and many reggae drummers of the past. Even Gregory Isaacs drummer was one of the best. You had the drummer that played for Eek A Mouse in the 1980's.
@@Hotters9060 Gregory had Sly on his early hits, then Style Scott with Roots Radics who were also his live band .. EEk a Mouse and Yellowman were produced by Junjo who brought in Roots Radics to track the riddims for them.
@@jracerichards I didn't know that. I though it was a different drummer who played for Gregory Isaac, Yellowman, and Eek-A-Mouse.
@@jracerichards I didn't know that. I though it was a different drummer who played for Gregory Isaac, Yellowman, and Eek-A-Mouse.
@@Hotters9060 Early Gregory was Sly ( Tune In, Border , Oh what a feeling)
Later Gregory Style( Night Nurse , Cool down the pace , Top ten)
Yellowman (Soldier tek over) Sly
(I'm getting married, Mad ova me,Zunguzzunzzugguzunguzeng) Style
Eek a mouse ( Wa do dem, Ganja smugglin) Style
That is not just Calton, the track also has Alvin's percussion in it too.
Try and remember please remember the legend that is Leroy Wallace
deadly
Exemple comin in from the cold , du dernier album.
Carlton Barrett invented only using the kick drum on beat 3. Thats very basically what he does.
Yeah his use of the kick drum was unique and clever, and made his style stand out
Wow. Where did you get this?
❤️⚽
Note-wise it's not complex but the Feel ! AND the ACCENTS are all important. Play this without and it would not be magical, in the Marley way.
Best reggae drummer ever!!than Come sly Dunbar
I know I’m about a month late with this comment, but I read an article a few years back in which Carly’s wife at the time said that Sly actually mentored Carly on how to make him a better drummer and in turn, Family Man mentored Robbie on how to become a better bassist. All four of them are at the top of my list.
Some times the student is destin to be greater than the Teacher
@@atomicdawg7410 the truth is some times you can guide some
Omg .. so spare
Where do you find raw tracks?
Tem alguma página no Instagram q passe algum conteúdo assim?
Why do some reggae drummers count the one drop on the third beat and others on the two and the four? Is there a consensus on how to count the one drop?
What hihat did he use?
Is this the actual drum track or replayed ? And is this usable ?
Actual drum track. Not mine, so can't say it's usable
School for reggae drummers
This was the drums for kinky reggae, not lively up yourself. Right?
No.. It's Lively Up Yourself
Bonham and Copeland (my other two favorites) have nothing on Carly.
I swear this man was a quantizer himself. Listen to him play faster in his later recordings you’ll go mad. Sly was great but not like Carlton.
2:50 to 2:10 genius at work!
who the fuck is sly drumbar?
Absolutely fucking ill.
As talented as Marley was I believe the band was much more talented.
i heard this shit is actually hard to play because of the ridiculous timing and what not?
