"Straight from the Horse's Mouth" is a series of short video documentaries produced by Harrison "Professor" Stafford and starring legendary Jamaican drummer Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace where he shares his inside knowledge behind Reggae music...here "Horse" remembers his good friend Carlton Barrett, long time drummer for Bob Marley and the Wailers.
Carlton Barrett and his brother Aston ''Family Man'' Barrett were my best bredren in the Wailers. Carly was the warmest kindest musician that I ever knew. He and Family Man would always look out for me. It was Carly that first taught me how to cook ital food as he and I would often take care of meal preparation in the Wailers camp. Carly wouldn't take no nonsense from anyone not even Bob Marley and he would often ''lick out'' if Bob did anything that he never approved. I recall one time during the Natty Dread sessions Bob began experimenting with a Rhythm King Rhythm box. Bob had heard Sly Stone using the Rhythm box on the song ''Family Affair'' and thought it was an interesting sound that he could try a thing with. Bob purchased the Rhythm King and began using while he and Family Man and I were creating songs like ''No Woman No Cry'', ''So Jah Seh'' and ''Natural Mystic''. Carly never liked the idea and would often tell Bob that he should '' Tek that bombart pon stage and mek dat play fi yuh.'' Everyone would crack up when Carly would have a go at Bob. Despite that Bob genuinely loved Carly and would not have replaced him with anyone or anything. Carly is the most distinctive and original drummer of the 20th century. Like my bredren Horsemouth said Carly's style didn't owe anything to any other drummer. He was strictly a one off kind of musician. He was an originator that set a trend in one drop Reggae. He and Family Man were responsible for providing the most distinctive sound that made the sound of the Wailers what it was. Credit and Kudos to Family Man who was NOT just another session player as I heard Rita Marley was reputed to have said. The fact is that it was Family Man who should have been given full production credits for Bob Marley's music. Family Man didn't simply play bass guitar. He additionally played acoustic guitar, piano, rhythm guitar in addition to ensuring that the ''sound'' of the music was right. Without Family Man and Carly Bob Marley's music would have never been what it is. Big up the ever living Carly Barrett. 👍👌😃💖💖💖

Reggae starts with the drums. It is the foundation. Without the foundation, you cannot build the house. One of the best reggae drummers ever.

we went to Sunsplash in 1982, & after the concert went to Kingston by plane, to visit Tuff Gong. It was I, my wife Zahava & our tiny baby Kaya, age 6 months. Rita held her in her arms. Carly came out of the studio & shook my hand with a giant smile, & welcomed me as if I were a Prince. At that moment I was, iz. He the only Wailer & ever touched, but they all touched I n I. Continually. Full Respect for Him & Music***

Thank you Harrison "professor" Stafford for this beautiful tribute all too rare to Carlton Barrett, especially since he remains one of the best reggae drummers. I think he's the source of a lot of little things on the drums still used today by all the reggae drummers (well, they try! Not everyone is "Carly") That he's resting in peace.
I greatly admire his drumming technique, it's beautiful and difficult to stop listening. It's a shame he was taken too soon, I wish his family well.

His style is open for addition, you can put into it with out it loosing the feel, and that's what he did when he felt like it,

Carlton Barrett - b. 17 Dec 1950 - 17 Apr 1987-“Carly" Barrett was one of the early pioneers of the ‘One Drop’ drumming style. Born in Jamaica, and one of the original band members of Bob Marley's Wailers.
On April 17, 1987, Good Friday, as Carly arrived at his Kingston home, a gunman stepped up behind him and shot him twice in the head. He was dead on arrival at a Kingston hospital at the age of 36.

The most correct drummer of all ltimes. Cant be more correct than him and creator of his own style, respect. Though the recordings did not give good listen of what the real sounds of his beats.
Taken away from us to soon Loved Carlton he was so deep into the reggae groove I love his druming on Legalize It Peter Toshs album and Bobs Albums loved his craft.

I love those two Barett brothers my uncle thought me to no Bob Marley by snare drum while I was six years the song I picked while I was young by myself is redemption song the instrumental one . I wasn't aware that famaly man use to play acoustic guiter on the band . I was allways surprised of the hi-hat style of playing example Natural mystic and punkey reggae party the druming was so amazing combination of tumborines and kick and snare . Cally Rip

You can tell his choice of music was this Latin etc he be throwing them rolls in for fun.. Random single hits on the snare or Tom. And the way he had his snare tuned to timbale pitch.

Yes and ar 3:41 seconds he’s talking about the high hats and using a term I’ve never heard before (being from North America perhaps), “triplet semiquavers” which is very cool because there’s a lot of that kind of thing that goes on behind the music in African based rhythms.
Besides the pure feel there’s also a kind of mathematics that goes on. How many ways and layers of subdivisions of beats can be utilized to great effect.
“Triplet semiquaver’s” would likely be playing double time 12/8 or triplets against another less dense subdivision. Take a listen to Afro Cuban “Bata” drumming and you’ll hear a lot of the stuff going on. It also happens a lot in Congolese drumming and likely in Brazilian drumming as well. But you really have to commit to listening to the stuff and get it under your skin as well as analyzing it.

Carly woman hire man to kill him for his money , I hope God himself take care of these vipers . I read that story in the Jamaica gleaner a few years ago , I know she went on trial and got convicted. This is one story that will stay with me thru all my days , I am Still upset to this day .
