Pretty cool and it has a face to boot! I imagine you could add a little wax if anything ever started sticking too. Maybe an embedded magnet if the slide front ever tried to slide off on its own. I think on the end of a board it's called a rabbet.

Aiming to make my own too as an experienced amateur stills photographer (who enjoys diy and carpentry) I'm wanting to up my video capabilities and feel these might help. I'd considered designing 'nesting' too but had wondered about making to also store grip kit (grip heads, super clamps, baby pins, cardellini clamps etc etc) but figured there must be a reason I never saw that - perhaps too heavy or only limited space maybe? any thoughts on pros/cons of incorporating storage?
That’s a great idea. The problem I would suppose is the difficulty in making it strong enough to hold super heavy gear. You’d need some gussets on the inside. Normally a full apple that doesn’t nest has a center support and the other side that doesn’t remove. With the nesting your points of contact are less and there is no middle support. So it’s already not as strong. But since you wouldn’t need to nest apples inside, you could do gussets to strengthen it and still have room for storage. Give it a shot!!

Thanks! And yes, the plan was to put a magnet but it fit so snug, I called it quits. But eventually will probably have to put one.

Pl saw use a Lavaliere or shotgun mic. It’s very hard to hear you with an enormous amount of echo
