As Ethiopian with a sadden heart, i can assure you that it is more than 100% devaluation of our currency (Birr) as in today. Not only have it worsened our economy, but now I am even concerned about how they are going to enforce their ideologies in our country because of it. Thank you guys for covering this ropic. The West had its eyes on Ethiopia since times of antiquity, in fear that ethiopia will be the next superpower leading the rest of Africa as its history indicates. The debt trap is a common strategy by the West. I couldn't agree more. . . The US made Ethiopia and many other African countries aid-dependent. But non prospered. On the other hand, the Marshal Plan and Truman Doctrine helped war-ravaged Europe to redevelop and made South Korea a success story. All can be attributed to the US policy of counter-communism. The only country Washington invested so much in Africa is Egypt which happens to be the historical enemy of Ethiopia. America allotted $1Bn military budget to Egypt annually while keeping Ethiopia food aid dependent. IMF and WB denied a loan to Ethiopia when building the hydroelectric Renaissance Dam on the Nile because Cairo was against it after signing the 2012 agreement that allowed Ethiopia to build it. 85% of the source of the Nile River is in Ethiopia but 60% of the population lives in darkness. The dam only generates electricity and won't reduce the flow of the river. The excess amount of water from the Nile either evaporates in the desert of Egypt or flushed out to the Mediterranean sea. The US built the Hover dam on the river that crosses the Mexican border. Could the Mexican government pressure the US not to build the dam? I guess not. But President Trump said, 'Egypt can blow up the Dam'. Yep, that's his exact words. Because of that, so many Ethiopian Americans voted for Biden in the 2021 election. But in the Tigray war, Biden betrayed Ethiopia. His government tried to overthrow the democratically elected leader. He didn't even congratulate him after he won the election. Currently, he's one of the most hated American presidents in the history of Ethiopia. Egypt(US) called the UN on the issue of the Dam dozens of times. And in the Tigray war, Russia , China and India vetoed US's sanction on Ethiopia. Recently IMF finally made an agreement to give loan to Ethiopia as the construction of the dam is completed without a loan. So democrats or reps . . . they're not good to Ethiopia because of the national interest of America which is favoring the strategic ally. i.e Egypt(the eternal enemy of Ethiopia).

An NPR article assed the issue and found that the Dam which seems to be added cause of conflict is actually beneficial to both countries, Egypt and Ethiopia. It’s just that it give Ethiopia an upper hand in being able to control the flow of the river , rather than nature being the controller. People have to slow down to assess the issue further and not love creating enemies if they want to learn truth. Ethiopia/ Egypt alliance also goes back in history beyond Egypts Islamic occupation, not only animosity.

A while ago, I read a book called “dead Aid” by an African female author. The author is a former IFM economist. In her book, she mentioned Ethiopia and how she is trapped by foreign Aid.
I also read another article, about aid and the article mentioned Ethiopia as “Aid darling” and i remembered I felt so bad/ embarrassed as an African.

One fact that needs to be corrected on the article (and on all other Western take on the colonization of Ethiopia) is that Ethiopia was NEVER colonized. Yet, the West always say "except a brief moment of being ruled by Italians". However, the occupation of European countries by Nazi is never referred as such. Just like European countries were never colonized by Nazi, Ethiopians were fighting the whole five years with Fascist Italy.. My grandfather passed away fighting Italians, as a result my mom grew up without her father. My mom was affected hugely by those bastard Fascists. We are forgiving people and have established diplomatic relations with Italia. This week Ethiopian Airlines celebrated its 60th year anniversary of continued flight to Rome. France was the first country to request receive a loan from the IMF in 1947. Ethiopia first received an IMf loan in 1965.
But IMF did not force Ethiopia to take her loans.

Very interesting analysis. I appreciated the perspective, as an Ethiopian American. However, there is a boyish simplification of lots of things mentioned here and one sidedness.
Let’s first agree that no nation is simply altruistic, I have no faith in China and believe Ethiopians need to watch their own backs instead of reliance on any nation’s aid.
Philosophically, here’s another topic that bother me most about Africa and Ethiopians in particular. Although the birth rates are expected to go down, as you’ve demonstrated on the video, there’s been a HUGE boom in population, aided with reduced childhood mortality. That is all on Ethiopians to fix and not an American, Russian, or Chinese problem. I’ll say that whichever nation helps most with education of youth is the best friend, because that creates the revolving door curse of early uneducated parenthood which keeps the nation in poverty.
I’m very proud that both of my parents returned to live in Ethiopia after obtaining their American nationalities after 10 years there. I believe more Ethiopian expats returning for development work is also a huge solution rather than dependency on foreign aid.

the devaluation is 100%, exchange was 58 two weeks later 110 birr to usd. i would say 10 or 15 % increase in everything right away. and most of the funding is used for subsidizing , and investing on things that wont make money like fancy LED's🤣🤣 Ethiopia is cooked , so more debit in the future into chaos , like Nigeria and Kenya. tnx for covering this

If you go back to 2018 when Abiy assumed power, it went up 400%. The xchange rate used to be 28 birr/ 1 usd

The 30% devaluation of Birr vs. Dollar happened within days of the announcement ($1 = Birr 57). In a couple weeks, it reached 💯% ($1 = Birr 120). The worst part is, food prices increased 10 fold or by 1000% (yes, a thousand percent). Other essential are at least 400% increases. So, the poor feel it worse.

The only way to buy dollars in Ethiopia was through the black market. The current exchange price as of today atleast is essentially the same as it was on the black market before the devaulation. So not much has changed for the average Ethiopian. Infact, access to forex has increased as it was pretty much non-existent before.
