I probably would have installed a threaded union where the coupling was just to make future repairs easier because those ball valves and RPZs break often. Wish I could find someone who wouldn't balk at a $2000 bill.... Nice work Mr Hand E!!

Small bit of advice from a former plumber and current multi family maintenance man. If you have done this same thing for a customer before sounds like winterizing is falling on deaf ears. Sweat in a union in place of the coupler and this will make the next replacement much quicker.

@@jimduffy3523 Most homeowners in UK forget about their outside taps no matter how many times you remind them to isolate and open them up before the freeze! I often suggest putting a wooden insulated housing round them for this reason.

@@Rprecision wilkins internals are locally available here and to rebuild one is about $25 vs $130 for the whole valve. Also a lot less labor. Yoy can buy the parts individually as well, so there goes your theory.
@All About Roofing internals isn't the problem when they freeze and crack the valves or housing. They whole point of my original comment isn't that you could never rebuild one, (although many you cant) the point is when the valve is frozen its more cost effective to replace. So you replace a cracked valve all to find the main housing is also cracked and leaking, did you or your customer just save money? How do you think I learned that one? Hint, because it happened several times. It's not theory, go ahead rebuild them all you want I could care less.

Have you ever considered offering somethings like a maintenance contract for customers/ clients. For a yearly fee you would take care of all the annual maintenance for the property ( i.e. winterize ext. water lines, gutter cleaning, HVAC filter change, HVAC cleaning, water heater flush, etc.)? Haven't watched much of your channel so don't know if you have addressed this before. Thanx and keep up the good work.
Just don't get the alligator model from them. The regular knipex have a button on the head letting you slide exactly where you want to. I have both wrenches and pliers from them and they work great. Much nicer to work with than channel locks.
The tiny valve you noticed was cracked after the first repair is actually called a test cock. Though you can drain from there, the primary use is to test the PVB. In the event of back siphonage you can confirm the vacuum breaker opens.

Have you ever considered selling a renewable “winterizer” service to prevent this? If you sell an annual winter shutdown to enough clients it will generate more revenue at a higher profit margin!
Could you put an insulated enclosure around the fixure that would be all season that is accesible for repair , replacement , adjustment etc and charge a fair add on price to it ?
I may be wrong but I would have cut the pipe above or below the coupling and then installed a repair coupling because it can be a pain to get all the water out of the pipe.

I'm not a fan of shark bite fittings but if this is a regular thing maybe it would be worth putting the sliding sleeve one on there esp since it's in an easily accessible area.
Yeah, I get that but if he charges the same amount each time as in he bills for this job not time. He can cut the labor time down and make his hourly earning increase. Like I said it's just a thought I'm not sure how he bills for this. But if he typically charges $100 for this and he buys a slp joint fitting not necessarily shark bite brand but of the same style and now instead of it taking 30mins it may only take 10mins and he can do more and still make the same amount for less time.
I always try to replace things with the same parts when prompted with situations like these. Do you ever modify it to make it more uhh... "servicable"?
Instead of a sleve, should be a union joint, so when other parts of that need to be repaired or replaced, it can be done easily without effort and waste of materials.

Anytime the backflow preventer is frozen I replace the whole thing. Saves callbacks and the drama you went through.

Curious, it looked like the valve bodies and top valve weren’t really tight. Do you leave it loose and let the pipe dope harden to seal it?
You get them as tight as you can and still line up. Sometime if you go for another turn it tightens up to much before you get where you need to be.

the main reason these are out there is because the rest of the system might freeze. This is your drain / blow out point.

In my area if we were uninstalling and reinstalling a PVB we wouldn’t have to have the device tested.

shark bites are not cheap so for only a few bucks more you could do a brass union and not worry about it.

Throw a union where that coupling was. Insulate it for the customer, and explain what and why you did it. They’ll thank you for it
