Defying Gravity has some breaks in the show as well! However you are probably right that they added more or lengthened the breaks in the song, I had some suspicions based on the trailers and clips. Thanks for the review, I can‘t wait to see it!
I have been a fan of the musical since I saw it in Broadway, in September of 2003. I saw the musical with the Original Cast. My expectation for this movie based on the past Musical adaptation to the big screen I was hoping for the best but expecting another CATS and Mean Girls fiasco. Jon M Chu did what should be expected for a good musical adaptation, it not only catered to the Wicked Fandom but also was an amazing story, cast, and setting for a first-time viewer. Bravo for everyone who brought this modern masterpiece to life, thank you from this 55yr Old theater kid for renewing my faith in what made me fall in love with the theater in the first place.
I think I know what you were talking about with the “chopping up” of a song. But I have to disagree. Perhaps you were just so used to hearing it a certain way on the album especially since it’s been played a lot in your household. But that song in particular is broken up in the stage production too. And thematically, I think the breaks worked. It added to the intensity of emotion until the climax. Also, yes, I agree with Wendy here on the runtime. It felt like it all zoomed by. People keep on focusing that it’s been split up but honestly, I think the book alone could’ve made 4 movies. And Act 1 feels like a complete movie on its own as is.
I think you hit the nail on the head about the song feeling “chopped up”. It’s been forever since I last saw the production, and the OST doesn’t have the song broken up in the same way the play does. At the end, it’s such a fantastic movie and I can’t wait to see it again
@@TheMovieCouple John Chu said in an interview that it was a real task envision Defying Gravity as a movie scene because naturally, instead of being suspended above the stage in one place, Elphaba flies when she belts out to the sky so I guess the breaks is to portray someone "catching up" to the rush of newly gained freedom. That's my take, anyway.
I saw it last night. It had so many Easter eggs from the Wizard of Oz, stage musical, the book, and some surprise cameos, music, dancing sequences, cinematography. The two actresses Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande owned their roles as the witches. The whole cast and crew I think did an amazing job. My husband went to the play with me and also to the movie last night. It was funny because it was mostly women and a couple of guys in the theater. I think most of the guys were going to Gladiator 2 and the women going to Wicked. But when he's not interested in a movie, he goes outside for a lot of smoke breaks and leaves early to go get the car. He stayed until the very end To Be Continued on the screen. Will probably see it again with mom, sisters, nieces that want to go.
I'm so excited to see this on Thursday! Been a big fan of The Wizard of Oz and I'm excited to see this one. The five year old me in the Dorothy Gale dress with ruby red slippers would be jumping up and down to know about Wicked movie.
Part 2 will most likely be reprised of songs in part 1 with perhaps some new original songs. I think they will get into more deeper aspects of the story from the book that the play didn't get into.
I really want to see this in theaters. My one concern is that former theater kids and Wicked fans will forget all movie going etiquette and sing along through the whole thing. Like I’m seeing stuff about interactive sing along screenings, but those wouldn’t start until next month.
Dustin, my 3 sisters and I had a few days in NY, but they were arguing. I spent my saved car money on 3 tickets to Wicked, and slept at the hotel. Later these 3 came hugging, laughing, and crying (why?), and told their only brother about Wicked. W&D, thanks for a great review. I guess Wicked magic is real.
I’m going to see it tonight!!!! I haven’t had the privilege to see the musical before but I’ve listened to the soundtrack over and over again for 20 years. 20 years is a LONG time to manifest anything so I really feel like a dream of mine is finally coming true. 😭 Also, growing up gay in rural America, I can relate to Elphaba so deeply on the feeling of being “othered” and misunderstood. This movie is going to absolutely wreck me and heal something in me at the same time. 💚💖🫧🫧🫧 Also, aside from Defying Gravity, I am most looking forward to The Wizard and I.
@@TheMovieCouple Doesn't look like a Glicked holiday. Gladiator 2 is shaping to be a box office underperformer to failure and audiences are refunded to see wicked. The audience scores aren't good and it looks like we don't need it. The first one was perfect.

I was trying hard to get an early screening for Wicked last Sunday, but was unable. I'm very excited to see this movie. 💚💖
Yes!!! Sneaking watching this at work 😅
hehe!
Mr Bridgerton got his start on broadway
Love him in this

Omg I was so worried this might be the case during my screening. Luckily no one decided to make the screening their personal karaoke room.
Can’t wait 🩷🩷🩷💚💚💚🧹🫧🫧
