From what I've read, llamas and donkeys may be afraid of wolves due to their large size and strength in numbers, or may themselves be vulnerable. However, certain dog breeds, when put in small packs, are considered pretty useful when defending the flock from wolves, or even from cougars and bobcats.
I really wish more ranchers would use guard animals to protect their livestock instead of trapping, poisoning and shooting coyotes. Coyotes have a place in nature. Without them, rodents would overpopulate everywhere. Rodents are their main food source. I had a pet coyote (here in North Dakota). She had been raised by hand from about 10 days old. One of my coyote-hating neighbors reported us to the game warden who came out and confiscated her and had her euthanized. She was a wonderful pet
lol a coyote as a pet?! Coyotes often subsist off waste and are often awfully diseased. Around here they overpopulate from dead factory-farmed animal corpses, the factory farms people purchase from in their grocery store... like where you get the meat you fed your pet coyote.
I've heard that similar stuff like this is done with chickens. From what I've heard, some people might stick a few guinea fowls in with them so when danger comes, they'll screech and the chickens will run. Or I've also heard that sometimes, they might keep a few turkeys and let them run loose with the chickens, because male turkeys will usually puff themselves up and hold their ground against foxes and hawks, and the chickens will just hide behind the turkeys for protection.
You do realize that coyotes are an American form of wildlife, therefore any farmer using these techniques are Americans? Just because BBC is filming doesn't mean it is is British. This isn't new in any case. And don't think that the donkeys just chase them away. A donkey will kill a coyote if he can get his mouth and hooves on it as will a Llama. We use a donkey to help protect our foals.
I knew about guard donkeys, and dogs of course, but guard llamas? They are so cute too. If I get sheep and chickens again I will look into getting guard animals. The coyotes are not afraid of people at all around here, and will walk right up to you. One was menacing my horses when I went out to feed them, and came right up to me. I thought it was going to bite me and kicked it--my lead mare then went after it and chased it off the property. Cougars have attacked my horses too.
That's not more efficient. Those animals will cost way more than removing the coyotes. Plus the coyotes will just come back with a pack of they don't get removed legally. Bbc taking a one-off instance in an attempt to sway opinion. Dead coyotes don't need any deterring, they're the only ones that do no damage.
I don't think shooting them is a long-term solution. The dead coyote just gets replaced by another from elsewhere. Much better to deter the resident coyote with a guard animal, I think.
actually tripleheshy a burro or llama is a pretty effective guard. in the wild burros chase and attack coyotes. they are much bigger than what they normally consider prey - even in a pack. an angry burro could do a lot of damage to a coyote or a wolf. they are really powerful
I really hope humans and coyotes will learn to coexist peacefully in the future. Coyotes are here to stay, so it is up to us to learn non-lethal and peaceful ways to coexist. If killing doesn't work, then coexisting must be the way forward!
Coyotes are very reluctant to take on larger animals especially if they show any aggression. I would not have thought of Llamas and Donkeys but they certainly are larger and they did not seem to want to put up with any shit from the coyote.
You are very right! But she is smart. That is why she has a Donkey and a Lama. And for that matter she can get few Alpacas. They can be in multiple and still will herd/gaurd the live stock. My friend has bunch of Alpacas. And they still come right in between me and the goats when I step in there. And these gaurd animals are so intelligent and intimidating at the same time. Finally also when you hurt/trap coyotes - they breed profusely. Meaning more females in the pack are allowed to breed.
I just bought a new home. Its in the foothills outside the city I lived in. I have been here a week...and every night starting in the early evening, before the sun sets,.the coyotes start howling. There are marks on my windows from the them standing on my porch looking in the windows. Even when I am home and making noise. I have to say its unsettling. The distant howls are eerie cool but not, (like right now...lol) them howling just out of sight of my motion detector lights. And the fighting..
@madax132 A 19 year old woman is still 5 foot tall and over 100lb adult. That's much stronger than a coyote. Though the coyotes in this case were wolf hybrids and were 50 to 70 lbs, a pack of three or four canines that size could take down any human. If you had been on the island that day your powerful dog would have saved you. Too bad Tayor was alone.
This works, but coyotes and wolves will still get in,my uncle has a sheep farm and they have donkeys but we still end up having to shoot the coyotes and wolves
this is true. but a cow is pretty docile compared to a bull, say, or a donkey. they are all big but the latter would be much more aggressive. but I really dont know. I'd have to ask an expert, which clearly I am not . lol
@CanadiaNecro1 You should also consider the fact that coyotes don't have weighing scales, and humans are much taller than sheep. We look bigger to predators. Still, your point is mostly valid. My roommate's cat only harasses one of my cats, the one that looks like he's ready to bolt every time they see each other.
Interestingly a human and an adult sheep weigh about the same yet humans are seldom attaked by coyotes. If you act like prey, predators will attack you. Don't act like a prey animal and you won't be eaten. The same approach can be used against human predators. Don't act like a scared victim. If you are confident you are scary to them and you have nothing to fear.
@madax132 Coyotes are not stupid but are very crafty, as much as a dolphin or ape. They are very adaptable and can eat anything, just like humans. The only thing is they are shorter and weaker than us, and also don't have the ability to use a stick to defend themselves. Coyotes have used pack behavior to kill humans. It happened since my last comment. Obviously I underestimated them. Look up "Coyotes kill Taylor Mitchel"
@Bobesocks This is not talking about controlling the population, Its about protecting the sheep. I myself have guard llamas for that same reason. I think you misunderstood.
Now of course, take everything with a grain of salt. I don't know how legit my sources are, nor do I remember them all. For turkeys, be careful that your chickens don't have certain diseases (mostly blackhead) that the turkeys could possibly get and die from. But as long as they're mostly outside in a larger area, they should be fine, because the turkeys are far less likely to accidentally eat the chickens' crap, which is where turkeys usually get blackhead and other sicknesses from chickens.
Ok, now that you have your ATTACK Lama's Whoes going to defend those poor Giraffs against these Killer Lamas??? Doesnt anyone know that one of the only animals on Earth that hunts Giraffs is a Killer Lama??? Ive heard that they pack guns..They have some kind of hidden pouches where they hide like 38s.
I think a riffle and a few lessons would be far more efficient, and cheaper, and you never have to worry about them returning. Look people, coyote have no natural predators. So the more food that's available, the more they multiply. Don't be so dam stupid.
@CanadiaNecro1 Like I said a lone women is not going to be much of a challenge for a coyote and wolf mixed pack, a coywolf of 70 pounds would arguably have more muscle mass than her. It depends on the human and the coyote pack in question but I say most humans could defend themselves against a coyote pack. It is sad that that happened to her though, I always encourage people in coyote areas to get ovcharkas, excellent species of dog, very loyal and strong.
I didn't know that about guineas and turkeys. I knew I wanted turkeys when we start homesteading but now I know to keep them with the chicken flock (with caution, of course). Thank you!
So you do not want to trap or poison the vermin coyotes? Right? You would rather scare them off with guard animals to your neighbour's farm to kill their sheep? That's a really nice, socially responsible attitude.
@jijuspiritwalker you must be out west bud because here in atlantic canada the coyotes are about the size of a good sized german sheppard because when they migrated from the parries the inter-bred with wolves so they are like the coyote from hell. two years ago in october of 09 they killed a poor girl who was visitng the maritimes on a musical tour. they also kill our cattle. they are by no means harmless. the ones out here are much larger compared to their prarrie counterparts :P
ppl who think hunting is cruel if animals populations grow the animals with starve to death would you rather hav a quick death or starve to death and coyotes wont go exstieck
Last night there were a bunch of Coyotes right next to our land. I didn't bother to go check because my animals (just four) are locked in a little barn at nights. But my neighbor buddy went checking but could not spot them. I dont mind them even in my land at night. My birds/animals are secured at night. I wish they take care of the moles/gophers. LOL. But now I am seriously thinking of either Lama or Alpacas.
How is this more "natural" than, say, shooting coyotes? As much as I love all animals including nuisances like coyotes, there is no reason to exclude humans from the abstract all encompassing entity that we describe nature to be as; humans are as natural as anything else. I think there really isn't anything wrong about dealing with coyotes in a different way.
kala captain Damn, I don’t remember this comment. I doubt coyotes would build a resistance against bullets. Evolution just isn’t that effective. If that was the case, then the surviving game animals in the wild would be built like tanks.
She may think trapping doesn't work, but without hunting and trapping of predator animals, they will quickly overpopulate and shell need a whole herd of lamas to protect her sheep. The problem is that llamas are ineffective if you have more than one because they bond with each other instead of the sheep.
wow ranchers an farmers are getting smarter but thy still haven't solved the the starving out the wildlife if thy would place there scraps in a place 4 the wildlife thy would conserve on trash an help many wild animals the elders of this land call this giving a spirit plate
Llama: *exists*
Coyote: Well this is just weird, Im outta here.
Respect to those who use intelligent methods of managing predators.
Eeyup.
From what I've read, llamas and donkeys may be afraid of wolves due to their large size and strength in numbers, or may themselves be vulnerable. However, certain dog breeds, when put in small packs, are considered pretty useful when defending the flock from wolves, or even from cougars and bobcats.
get all of the above
Donkeys can take on Hyenas. A pack of donkeys can fight off a pack of wolves. 1 donkey vs 1 wolf the wolf dosent stand a chance.
@@MuffHama pack of donkeys might be more interested in hanging out among themaelves
Then again, they have a huge inherent dislike for anything that look like canine
A farm near me uses llamas to beat down bobcats and coyotes 😅

Your neighbor sounds like a real POS
I HAD A WOLF PACK BOY
Unfortunately you can’t keep wild animals as pets :/
What else did you have for a pet? A black mamba? A vulture? A hyena? Jesus wept.
lol a coyote as a pet?! Coyotes often subsist off waste and are often awfully diseased. Around here they overpopulate from dead factory-farmed animal corpses, the factory farms people purchase from in their grocery store... like where you get the meat you fed your pet coyote.
Love the guard llama.

It's called a Rooster. I have a fenced run. But still open at the top. I get birds of prey looking in but they move along when they see the roosters.
That larma is super big
we could use more wise farmers like that in america .. wish we could get more of em
You do realize that coyotes are an American form of wildlife, therefore any farmer using these techniques are Americans? Just because BBC is filming doesn't mean it is is British. Suzanne Mohme it was a pretty ambiguous statement one way or another. your drawing a lot from it. guarding livestock is cool
+Suzanne Mohme yeah the lady being filmed even had an American accent. some people are just so ignorant
America could use more wise people period!
Yes, wise farmers to push these pests into starvation. A much more humane way to die.
I knew about guard donkeys, and dogs of course, but guard llamas? They are so cute too. If I get sheep and chickens again I will look into getting guard animals. Okay I am now a fan of llamas lol
stay away from it. they hate everything
true llamas hate dog like creatures, i saw a video wherein the llama kept chasing a dog away hahaha
A .22 LR is a great way to control the population.
@JOSEPH BRADFORD Yes, shoot. I've taken 3 out already.
wow, the burro and llama are beautiful animals!! very very nice vid.
I shoot coyotes here. We get about $20 per. I shoot very humanely, though. I respect my prey and use the pelts.
At least you don't take them for granted and actually use leftover.
I don't think shooting them is a long-term solution.
The dead coyote just gets replaced by another from elsewhere.
Much better to deter the resident coyote with a guard animal, I think.
Shooting them is not a solution
Naughty Avocado yes it is going to say please stop coyote don’t eat my cattle mr coyote
@kala captain That could be the dumbest thing ive read on the interwebs this week.
thats it im getting a guard llama for my house!
the llama's I've definitely heard of as great guardians for the sheep, but I had no idea donkey's were good at it too.
Donkeys bite
The best are Mammoth Donkey..cost more $... but, they are the best!
actually tripleheshy a burro or llama is a pretty effective guard. in the wild burros chase and attack coyotes. they are much bigger than what they normally consider prey - even in a pack. an angry burro could do a lot of damage to a coyote or a wolf. they are really powerful

That llama was ready to kick ass.

A gaurd llama? That's adorable.

I saw a llama kill a coyote once. They take their guardian job seriously.
Humans should find more of these NATURAL solutions to such problems..
Good on the farmers and ranchers to use natural deterrents.

understandable but thats the farmers income/safety its eating.
This IS their natural habitat. Their original one was overtaken by...oh, that's right OTHER HUMANS.
How do they do on wolves?
bad real bad leave that to the gun not donkey
better then poisoning, shooting, trapping etc.
yes and we have chickens and they are
getting killed by coyotes....
llamas are like sexy sheep ;)
no
