Forsberg came home in 09-10 to play for free for MODO, they were risking elimination and bankrupcy. Him and Naslund played without salaries to draw a crowed to a new arena that he had funded. Played 23 games, 11 goals and 19 assists for a total of 30 points.
For me, he is the best all-round hockey player I’ve ever seen. His heart, work rate and competitiveness is second to none.
For me there are 5 players that you can put in any order: Peter the great, sid the kid, Bobby clarke, Stevie Y, and Mr. Hockey. Honorable mentions to Datsyuk, bergy, kurri, Kopitar, Francis, and naslund

I am of Swedish background and will tell you something about Swedes:
There are 3 kinds ...
1. Laplanders - reindeer herders.
Very tough and can take anything you can dish out but are barely assertive, let alone aggressive.
Safe around women & children.
Examples:
Mats Sundin / Markus Naslund / Magic Nilsson / Borje Salming / Nic Lidstrom / Hakken Loob / Michael Nylander, etc.,
2. Bushwhackers - Savage woodsmen / hunters / trappers. Tough and have a temper & Killer Instinct. Don’t piss them off and turn your back on them! Women & Children should probably keep their distance if these guys are in a bad mood.
Examples:
Paul Holmgren / Nik Kronwall / Ulf Samuelson
4. VIKINGS - bloodthirsty Raiders & Killers - would as soon skate THROUGH you as Around you!
These are the guys you send out to recover the women & children!
Examples:
Forsberg / ..... hmmm having trouble thinking of many more. Foppa is the quintessential VIKING. He LIVED for a PHYSICAL skill challenge.

He’s certainly one of the biggest “what ifs” in the history of the game. I watched a lot of Avalanche games as a kid and got to see him live multiple times as they were in the same division as the Oilers, and I am always surprised at how much time that he actually missed in his career. I look at him as nothing less than one of the all-time greats, despite only putting up 885 career points. The man was one the hardest people to remove from the puck that you will ever see. He would spend entire shifts with the puck, I swear. Even if he wasn’t doing anything that would lead to a goal, your team certainly wasn’t getting to play in the offensive zone for that shift, that’s for sure.
not only that. look at his defensive play. no jagr, ovechkin would tetrive the puck in their own zones, move the puck up the ice and score/assist on a goal. he was all over the ice and still managed to be a 1-point-per game player at worst
Exactly,& how you have to judge him isn't total points...it's points per game...& mostly in the dead puck era,where you were allowed to all but kill people.. before it was a penalty.(Marchment,Hatcher,Matmichuk,Scott Stevens)
@@phillytheflyerable He was a lot more than 1 point per game...his pts per game is top 5 All-time...or very close. I haven't looked it up recently,but it's crazy how many pts per game he averaged...more than Sakic.
There's 3 bigger ones.
Orr, Lindros and Lemieux. All got plagued by injuries, especially Mario, who could've scored like 2500+ points in his career, if he hadn't missed over 500 games during his career...
He accomplished enough to not leave any what ifs.

Perhaps the best all-around player in his prime. The Hero of the Clutch era! The shootout vs Canada in the Olympic final 94' will forever be inprinted in my brain.
if the guy had no injuries, can you imagine the stats? He's one of those players i could never hate like Ray Bourque and Patrice Bergeron. Peter was just magic on the ice.
plus he played basicly his entire career in the age of the trap...had he played sooner...oh boy..
or later. but that was what merged his style. the toughe the games the better he was. remember when he was facing the whole florida team on his own. slapped, kicked, hooked, shoved, grabbed and still put up 6 points.

Well Forsbergs playing style made him injury-prone so saying "imagine if he didn't have the injuries" is like saying "imagine if Forsberg didn't play like Forsberg"

forsberg was one of a kind. no one can or could do what he did. some few. like me, argue that he is the best player of all time. just look what he was able to do on the ice. its like a mix of datsuyk and a mick foley on ice. injuries shortened his career and the stuff he did was not humanly possible.

I agree he was one of the best athletes of all time. His career was cut short because he was so tough.
My favorite player, hands down. A force on the ice. Another thing to be impressed about is the fact that Peters homecounty of Örnsköldsvik also has given us the Sedins and Näslund. Incredible considering the county has about 55.000 inhabitens.
And Viktor Hedman, Tobias Enstrom, Linus Ullmark, Niklas Sundstrom and Zucarello. But Zuc got there as a youngster from Norway :) I probably forgot some players.

Grew up with Forsberg being the big name in Swedish hockey. So much talent, so much grit. Even though he had an injury ridden career I think that somehow adds to the mystique around the guy. Such a 'what if'. He was a hell of a player to watch thats for sure.
Peter is one of my favorite players to ever play the game. As a child my 2 favorites were Curtis Joseph and Peter the great. I adored them both and mimicked everything they did.
Forsberg’s legacy is ahead of Ron Francis. Francis was a great player but Forsberg was a consistent Hart contender in his career.
You clearly didn't watch Ron Francis play if you think this! Francis is 2nd all time in career assists and 5th all time in points. Forsberg was a great player who had his career shortened due to injury, but he wasnt even the best player on his own team. Francis was the best on multiple teams except for Pittsburgh!

MikeG82 let me guess your someone who doesn't believe in stats? Mario isn't in this conversation an only someone that's ignorant in hockey would bring that up. Mario's stats speak for them self on why he's better then pretty much everyone, but we are talking Francis and Forsberg. What's Next you're going to tell me Paul kariya is better then Sidney Crosby. But you're right very hard to Compare when Francis has more assists then Forsberg has points. Two entirely different careers, two entirely different types of players that shouldn't even be compared. Yet here we are but not allowed to use stats that's funny. Please I can't wait to read your reply to why he's better other then saying he's not better then lemieux.

playing longer and piling up stats does not make a player better than a guy that was arguably the best in the world for a few years
your kariya/crosby example makes no sense considering crosby has more career points and has many individual trophies while kariya has nothing, francis has better stats than mario and just as many cups so i don't see the comparison with kariya/crosby
show me one ranking list that has francis ahead of forsberg, in honesty i think forsberg is a bit overrated he seems to becomes a better player the longer he's out of the game, but he's still better than francis just like mario is better than francis despite having less numbers on his stat sheet
i believe in stats when players are close in talent and peak, for example gretzky and mario are arguably the two best ever but gretzky gets the nod because his stats are much better
MikeG82 cups is a team sport that has nothing to do with this argument. Just because you and I are pens fans doesn't mean your making a good argument for Forsberg. Yes lemieux and Gretzky are close in comparison. I used kariya and Crosby because they just recently in the last two seasons were very close statistically even though we both know Crosby still has plenty of career left. (This was an arguement circulating around Pittsburgh when Crosby first got hurt)
Forsberg was maybe the best in the world for a season if we can even consider that best in the world since he never repeated it and his best season still is less then Francis best season. Yes Forsberg won a hart and art Ross that's certainly an accomplishment unfortunately the season he won it the field wasnt that impressive. Difference between them Francis helped his team win back to back cups Forsberg didn't help his team win both cups.
Honestly we are arguing over apples and oranges. Ironically he's the Eric lindros of the Colorado avalanche, a career cut short with plenty of potential that has what ifs surrounding it. Mark messier never won anything his entire career is considered one of the greatest of all time
Looked up to him as a hockey player for a good time. He had my respect and admiration. Two favorite Swedish plays him and Lidstrom.
I think the most impressive thing about Forsberg is that he put up those numbers while opposing players were clutching and grabbing and riding on his back. Elias Petterson will be the new Forsberg when it come to play-making (not the physicality and meanness). Both players have that intangible hockey sense.
He is also part of the triple club!. Stanley cup/olympic gold/gold in world championships!. Very impressive in sweden jersey!. I remember seeing him last time in vancouver olympics 2010 sweden jersey and he wasnt the same man!!. Im from finland and Forsberg with Sundin has caused me so much pain against finnish national team....aaaargh!!. But still i have always been his bandwagon!:). Great player:)

In the 1993 WJC he set the insane record of 31 points in 7 games. His class mate Markus Näslund "only" managed 24 points.

As a Detroit fan all my life, Peter Foresberg was pound for pound the best hockey player I ever saw
One of those rare players who you can say was an absolute warrior, but at the same time also the most talented guy on the ice
Most bone headed guy to ever come out of Sweden and play hockey. When you look at his highlights there was absolutely no quit in the man. He shoved through better or worse by punishing his body way too much for way too long but all he ever wanted was to compete in hockey.
They say he changed the way north Americans look at Swedish players forever. He played during the hooking era and despite some strong guys' best efforts it took so incredibly much to get him off the puck even if you were playing him dirty.
It’s tough the way his career ended, but boy was he a fierce competitor and he achieved things in his career that most could just dream of, despite his injuries!
Skilled guy who also played an extremely physical game too. Not easily bullied around at all.
My absolute favorite player of all time and the reason I fell in love with hockey. One of the most dominant players oh his days, an absolute force. I teared up at his HOF speech, if it wasn't for the this man I would've never fell in love with the game.

The season he only played in the playoff was BEASTLY! The series against Detroit was so dramatic. He was close to (almost singlehanded) take them to another Cup. Thats my biggest Forsberg moment.
Had the Avs beat the Wings ... no way he would not have won the Conn Smythe.
He said in several swedish interwievs that before 30 (03) he felt good, had a good time, everything just beeing good. But after that it was misery and just a fight against his body.
Also worth nothing that in 96 he was a member of the tripple gold club and felt a bit 'oh this is easy'.
I'm just happy that Forsberg is very well thought of and loved in Sweden. So many people have very fond memories of him. A man who deserve all the respect.

My favourite Swedish player of all time, the total package, tough as hell (mentally and physically), intelligent and superb technique + he is a really humble guy.

It was weird seeing him in Nashville and Philly.
As a Swede it was always fun to see him play in the national team, because you knew he would always at least try his best. Never seen anyone with that kind of just ridiculous willpower.
Absolutely, the willpower. The will to contribute to the team. The will to prove that Swedes were just as tough as North Americans. Watching Forsberg play was a joy and honor. I am just lucky to be a fan of the team he played most of his NHL Career with. Peter achieved the respect he fought so hard for.
This isn’t taking to account all the magical things he did in the swedish national team. Best swedish player ever in my oppinion. The most spectacular by far.

Had to watch an old documentary on Forsberg from 2011 where he explained that never understood what the word "spleen" meant :D. It was all thanks to his GM, at a dinner, saving his life. They found half a gallon of blood in his stomach at the hospital. Yikes!
Poor guy. What a talent, played super hard but also had massive amounts of heart in the game his whole career. Absolute Hall Of Fame.
As a Finn who's second favorite team was Detroit it was easy to dislike Avs and all Swedish players but I still really liked Forsberg and the way he played.

As a Wings fan watching my team during their rise in the early 90’s it was frustrating as hell to watch them play the Aves (ok the rivalry games were awesome) bc it seemed like Forsberg just couldn’t be stopped, he had such command, physical play and puck control. When I think of a complete player he’s one I would think of, just didn’t have major or even minor weaknesses in his game.

Forsberg was considered past his prime in Philly and still put up 115 points in 100 games. Look up "Peter the great Forsberg" and watch the amount of highlights he put up in less than 1 1/2 seasons in Philly.

For me, Forsberg is the best Swedish hockey player of all time, and Forsberg at his peak health and performance must be on the first line of an all-time allstar team of hockey. He had it all.

As a fan of every team based in Michigan, there have been three athletes that made me always sit up on the edge of my seat: Pavel Datsyuk, Barry Sanders, and Peter Forsberg. Only the last one was an "Oh, no!", the other two were with a "Oh, yeah, let's go!"
basicly top 5 player of all time..people often say "the way he played gave him injuries"...true but also the way he was hacked ans slashed in the clutch and grab era did it....i simply dont see anyone as good as him during that era in a overall view.

4:50 - Well you could make a lot of arguments aboy Peter Forsberg's play-style and choise of playing the 04-05 hockey season.
BUT in his defence for that choise, he did that out of pure loyalty to his hometown Ornskoldsvik and Modo Hockey, his foster team since childhood, and he allong with several Modo NHL stars, Markus Naslund, the Sedin brothers had near "promised" to win for there team a Swedish championship aka SM-guld.
Modo was joined with a lot of NHL star power beside them; Tommy Salo, František Kaberle, Alexander Steen, Adrian Aucoin, Mattias Weinhandl etc so Forsberg & Naslund fully believed they had great tallents to finally win home that championship. But they still had a mediocre season and went swept eliminated in 1st round play-off.
Other Swedish teams had great NHL star reinforcments as well so the league was major stacked that lock-out season.
He was the epitome of toughness grit and skill. My absolute favorite player to ever touch the ice.
Chris Pronger said on a podcast that Forsberg was his favorite player in the league to battle with. That kind of willingness to battle with one of the biggest and meanest defensemen the sport has ever seen, while also being one of the best point producers of his era and probably the best playoff performer - that's quite a hockey player.

I haven't seen a better overall hockey player than Peter Forceberg. He could play any style you wanted. The guy was a hero in the Dead Puck Era. His hockey IQ and vision was off the charts.

He was just awe inspireing.
Forsberg combined hands with speed and physicality like no player ever. He was so graceful and beautiful to watch and would run you over like a truck. His style of play is not sustainable, but man was he fun to watch. He's the greatest playmaker ever as far as I'm concerned. Joe sakic, Peter Forsberg and Milan Hejduk was an epic line.
Forsberg in his prime was a beast, shame he had all the injury problems. Met him at the Stockholm airport in Sweden when I was about 20 years old, I probably acted like a 4 year old on xmas 😂

Great video! Though I would argue that the further we get from his era the more his in-game dominance compared to other greats with more games and points is recognized. That's why he was a first ballot hall of famer with no real discussion unlike some of the others you mentioned. If you consider the testimonies of players who played with/against him and that he was 8th all time in ppg playing in the nhl's lowest scoring era his case for the HHOF is pretty clear.

Grew up watching him in Colorado and still think he's the most complete forward I've seen. His physical presence and strength were god-like.

As a Canadian, it sucked seeing them lose in the 1994 Oympics, but I gotta say the shootout winning goal by Forsberg was pretty sweet.

Also, Peter Forsberg is only one out of three NHL players in the Triple Crown Club (twice...) with Larionov and Fetisov (both HOFs).
96/97 was supposed to be his year. I almost threw up when Todd Simpson (a nobody of course) stuck out his leg and got Forsberg in the thigh... had it been the knee - his career would have been even shorter. He was killing it and so much fun to watch that year. Simpson a nobody taking out a HOF.
That was one guy who could dominate the ice in so many ways. He's defensive hits perhaps should put hin the box for interference but they were great to watch.
He was still good in 07-08 he signed late and had 14 points in 9 games I remember in NHL 09 that year he was a 95 overall one of the top players still

Way better than Lindros, You forgot that Forsberg when he had the puck you were not taking it from him like that time he took the puck into the zone against Calgary's 4th line dekes it all the way behind the net then gets tripped as he's going back to the blue line, maintains his balance and scores.

Foppa = greatest all round player of all time, a superstar who is stronger than you, smarter than you and more aggressive than you, there is and has never been anyone like Foppa (at the elite superstar level)
How about an episode on MoDo Hockey and the town Örnsköldsvik in northern Sweden with 30 000 residents.
That has produced NHL players like:
Peter Forsberg, Marcus Näslund,
Niklas Sundström, Victor Hedman, Samuel Påhlsson, Daniel & Henrik Sedin, Toby Enström, Mattias Timander,
Linus Ullmark, Robert Hägg.
Has to be unheard of, that a small town like that produced all these players.
Even when he was being held together by duct tape and bailing wire, I always feared for my team when Forsberg hit the ice.
On one hand, it's a shame the Flyers didn't keep him and let him blossom in Philly. On the other hand, Lindros was one of the most dominant players in the league and only injuries held him back. I still say Lindors was worth trading for.
Hope you will go through some other swedish players like Lidstrom, Salming, Sundin and so on. Also, it would be interesting if you talked a bit about the career and tragic death of Pelle Lindbergh. Probably only swedes and "older" people that know about him.
Point totals doesnt do justice to the player forsberg was. Super dynamic player, yet super gritty, clutch performer. One of the best players ive seen play.

When healthy, Peter Forsberg was one of the best offensive players on the ice in the era of the trap. Had he not accumulated so many injuries in a short period of time, he would have easily passed the 1000 point threshold and could have continued on playing longer than he did. Probably could have played into the early 2010s.
I shook his hand once at a bar, during the brief intermission he had back at MoDo .. it was like a vise clad in skin.

Peter, was a force, and an emotional boost for His team. Spectacular to watch. Nicklas Lidström had somehow all of that but house trained with disciplin into what looked like effortless surgical coolness.

Forsberg missing the entire 01-02 season, has foot surgery then comes back and has the most points in the playoffs is insanely impressive
I thing a lot misses. He was born with 60% sight on one of his eyes. Insane player. As a swede. So many special stories about this player since young age. He was a tiny boy from the beginning who learned and figured out how to master older and bigger opponents. In the end he had i all. Crazy strenght, balance, split vision and stick handling.
There is a story of him coming home after a game looking sullen. His Dad, Coach of Modo and the Swedish national team ask him what was wrong, he answered, we lost, 9-10 - his dad asked, did you score, Peter answered, 9 goals.
