This is a great list, I've read and enjoyed so many of these! Another author I'd definitely recommend is Jennifer McMahon, I'd start with either The Invited or The Winter People. I've been reading horror for a long time, but her books got me back into it after a long absence, and I think she'd be great for beginners too!
My first foray into the horror genre was C. J Tudor's The Chalk Man, which I liked. And later, The Burning Girls, which I loved. And Alex North too. Really enjoyed The Whisper Man and The Shadow Friend. So I'm definitely going to check out some of the others you mentioned. Great recommendations here ☺
I’ve always been intimidated by Stephen King books and have wanted to give them a try but ive never known where to start so thank you for recommending the shining! Definitely gonna try that one first!
Thank you for sharing your recommendations! I’m definitely a thriller guy, but I’d like to read more horror books. It looks like Halloween season will be fun with some of the books you’ve recommended. 🙂
Not a book rec but if you can get your hands on the 1990’s The Shining tv mini series definitely give it a watch! It was very well done and I might even like it more than the original. King liked the mini series much more than the classic movie. Another “SK Experience” book that would be great for beginners and experienced horror readers alike is December Park by Ronald Malfi. It’s a fantastic coming of age “group of kids battle a supernatural (or maybe not?) force and return to their childhood town” type book. So good!
I would love to see another intro to horror video if you have more recommendations. These all went on my TBR because I'm just starting to get interested in reading it.
I just subscribed! I enjoyed your description of all these books. I will definitely be checking some of these out. I am a beginner for reading thrillers and horror. Thanks so much!
Hi Ashley 👋🏻. Great video thank you! I have read the Fisherman and agree it’s a good intro to grief and cosmic horror. Thank you for mentioning Sundial, I had forgotten about it and now it’s on my TBR. I think another good intro to Stephen King would be Salems Lot. It is spooky and creepy but not overwhelmingly so. 🕷
Hide and Seeker by Daka Hermon is a great middle grade horror starter book. Major stranger things vibes! Don't Tell A Soul by Kristin Miller, My Best Friends Exorcism by Grady Hendrix are some good YA horror that would be good to start with. And The Elementals by Michael McDowell (80s under rated horror book, The Winter people by Jennifer McMahon (horror-thriller) and Carmilla (a classic), NOS4A2 by Joe Hill (fantasy horror ft vampires).and some Stephen King introductory books I'd recommend that aren't that scary or too long is Carrie, Firestarter and Pet Cemetery (thr latter is a little spookier than the other two but is my personal favorite and still a good horror book to start with)
This is a fab list! I would had R. Saint Claire's Ravenscroft Hall because it's more drama than horror, but it still has a classic horror creature in it.
Thank you. This is the video I’ve been looking for without knowing I was looking for it! I’ve enjoyed thrillers and then The Girl Next Door came on my radar. Apparently this is not a good place for a newbie to start into the horror genre so I will take your recommendations. 🕷🇨🇦
For anyone who wants a horror manga, I’d suggest Uzumaki by Junji Ito. It’s about a town haunted by spirals. It’s weird, it’s body horror and it’s cosmic horror. 🕷
🕷 I liked today's video. I picked up three: The Hole, The Fisherman, and The Cabin at the End of the World. (Didn't have a pen for the first part. I'll watch again after I read these three.)
I think The Manitou by Graham Masterton is a very good to start with the body horror reading. He is a true horror master for me. Loads of your recommendations are on my TBR already, even though I’m not a horror beginner. No emoji, sorry, scared of spiders, even on a pic, lol.

I keep putting her books off but I really need to try her stuff out!

I think you’d really like King’s Misery! This is one of the better recommendations videos I’ve seen in a while!🕷🕸

The mini series is great! The actor playing dad was scary as hell!
Ooh yes I need to try Ronald Malfi! And that mini series sounds so intriguing 👀

Sundial is one of my favorite reads of this year. I haven’t read Needless Street yet but I’m excited to!
I would love to see another intro to horror video if you have more recommendations. These all went on my TBR because I'm just starting to get interested in reading it.
I loved Dracula. I listened to the audiobook while I read the book and it made it easier for me.

Thank you for this! For some reason, I have a hard time getting into horror, but I love thrillers. Great recommendations!

Superb recs!
I love a good recommendation video! Thanks Ash!
I really wanted to read some atmospheric and psychological horror, so thanks for that ❤️😁
For anyone who wants a horror manga, I’d suggest Uzumaki by Junji Ito. It’s about a town haunted by spirals. It’s weird, it’s body horror and it’s cosmic horror. 🕷
Was super weird/scary for me so maybe beware 💀
Love these recommendations!
Thank you for this video! I don't think it's a list only for beginners ;)
Have you checked out any novellas from Chad Lutzke or Kealan Patrick Burke?
Thanks for the recs!🕷🕸🕷
Great video
🕷 I liked today's video. I picked up three: The Hole, The Fisherman, and The Cabin at the End of the World. (Didn't have a pen for the first part. I'll watch again after I read these three.)
I'm half way through the cabin, hard to make myself commit to it daily...
Loved this!!
I think any novella by kealan Patrick Burke is great as well!

Hahaha fair 😂
Maybe off-topic but have you read The Good Lie? I read it recently and loved it, gave it 5 stars. It’s a psychological thriller.
Yes! I read it for my friend’s (Reading With Jess) book club and there’s a video on her channel of us discussing it! I really enjoyed it too 😊
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Don’t read anything from Stephen King that he’s written in the last 10-12 years.
Thank you for sharing your recommendations! I’m definitely a thriller guy, but I’d like to read more horror books. It looks like Halloween season will be fun with some of the books you’ve recommended.
