IT was the first Stephen King book I ever read and pulled me back into being a heavy reader after not picking up a book (for entertainment) in a while. The character work is out of this world and right after I finished I immediately started to binge his other works. Hands down my favorite King novel.

@@otherworldsthanthese they are saying around that maybe you are that "Adam Medvidović" that wrote that "Night in Zagreb" that is raising a lot of dust - its like novel that is actually revealing whats gonna happen. It is known that "Adam Medvidović" is a pen name, but actuall writer is unknown. Wanted to ask you is it true? You are a genius for writing that and a man with the balls. If it is you.

I am so impressed that you read all SK novels. The book Rage was written at a very different time. There were no school shootings that I know of in the 70’s and it was a powerful book for it’s time. Sadly, we are in a different world. My favorites are Per Semetary, Salem’s Lot and the Shining and the Long Walk…. My least favorite was Cell. I just finished Later and really enjoyed it.

What a fabulous job you've done! As you said in your introduction, 100 King fans would undoubtedly come up with 100 different lists. But yours is well thought out. Having said that, of course my list is different. I think my top ten (no particular order) would include The Stand, Salem's Lot, Bag of Bones, It, The Shining, Pet Sematary, Needful Things, Desperation, Firestarter, and 11/22/63.

First of all CONGRATULATIONS!!!! It’s absolutely fascinating that you read all of Stephen Kings novels in just three years, especially some of his novels are insanely long!! I love this list and it makes me want to continue reading Kings books!! My favorite so fat are definitely It, green mile and I really loved Liseys story, but I’m currently reading Salems lot and I love it so far!

I just got through with reading Revival for the second time and in my opinion, it's one of the best examples of his newest balls to the wall horror, and The Dead Zone was the first Stephen King book I ever read and it holds a special place in my heart.

14:50 - Long Walk is indeed the first novel that Stephen King ever finished writing, which was in 1967 when he was a freshman in college. He actually started Rage earlier than that when he was a senior in high school but didn't finish writing it until 1971 when he found the partial manuscript it in a box in the cellar of his parents house.

I'm new to your channel and posted on your Firestarter video before posting a comment here (even though I watched this first). First of all, I wrote a paper for my bachelor's degree about the Firestarter novel. I agree that this book is full of themes and reference that could rival Shakespeare or Dickens. Such a well written cast of characters, plot, and pacing. My favorite line of yours though is when you said The Regulators was as all over the place as your sexuality. I had to go back several times to hear it again - Brilliant!

My top 5 would probably be Misery, The Running Man, The Dead Zone, The Shining, and (I know it's not a novel but) Apt Pupil. Really hard to choose though.

    • @otherworldsthanthese

    • @CezzL
      @CezzL 2 роки тому

@@otherworldsthanthese I think it took me by surprise when I read it. It was the first time I'd read one of his books where I could see the larger themes and issues that he was making a comment about: poverty & social class being the main one, and then the idea of the poor selling themselves for entertainment (reality TV) in order to survive and support their families. It's so close to what we see people do nowadays on reality shows and social media.
I think I was still quite new to King when I read it so I hadn't expected that kind of social commentary from his work (especially a Bachman book). I know it's not everyone's favourite though 😊

However, with all due respect, I am trying to finish Insomnia at the moment, and it’s difficult because it is dreadful. Lol. Painfully slow. And there is a 200-300 page section in the middle with nothing but exposition and instructions for moving forward (“above” the hospital with Ralph, Lois and the two little men). LOL I am 62, a young 62, so I was in my teens when King started with Carrie. I read a lot back then but stopped for some reason. Now I am buying all Stephen King books again. First I read Salem's Lot, one of my all time favorites. After all these years I still remembered the scenes that creeped me out the most. Then I read Billy Summers and agree it was a WOW book showing how great he still is. Then I read Mr. Mercedes and found it a bit slow at first but then the last 2/3 were amazing. I am trying to read all the books with Holly in them before reading Holly. I have 15 more I have bought. Some I will be rereading and there are newer ones I have not read yet like The Institute. I got Christine and Needful Things. Loved them back in the day and can't wait to reread them. The only thing I really disagree on is Dreamcatcher. That is one of my fave King books. Sorry for the length but would you like me to share my thoughts as I read each book and we can compare our thoughts. I already have 5 more in my Amazon cart including Pet Cemetery and The Dark Half and your fave Dreamcatcher LOL I look forward to reading more Later King like Duma Key, Bag of Bones and Lisey's Story. Oh lord, Tommyknockers, everyone gets one mulligan bad opinion 😂 Finders Keepers is definitely the best Bill Hodges book. You were a lot more lenient with The Stand than I was haha, I put it much lower. Love to see The Dead Zone in your top 20! WHOAAA Dark Tower 7 so low?!?! Your tastes did change! My favorite King book is either Misery or The Dead Zone - can never really decide between those two - and my least favorite is The Gunslinger.

I'm glad you mentioned "that scene" in the book IT, and I agree completely with everything you said. I was thoroughly enjoying the book, then reached that scene, and found it so disturbing, it ruined the rest of the story for me. It should never be there, and the fact it is removed from every movie adaptation speaks volumes. Many reviewers praise this book and never mention that scene, which I also find disturbing. Great review and great video.

@@Major42all the main kid characters have an orgy like literally the girl in the gang has sex with all the boys in the group.
It’s strange because when you read it you just brush it off but afterwards you say to yourself wtf did I just read and how is that not been banned and how is king not been Called a pedo for it because it is actually so bad.
But at the same time I think the reason behind it was that the kids knew they were all possibly going to die and wanted to experience what sex was all about but it’s just fucking weird

Oh my god. Pet sematary. You can never be wrong. First SK book I've read and first ever book I FINISHED. I hate reading and for some reason I felt I'm always out of focus so I tried reading. I went straight to Pet sematary (recommended by an old friend) and oh my god, I can't put it down. I love horror and never get scared easily but this one gave me nightmares and I got scared to climb off my bed because I'm afraid that Z**** would pull my feet from under the bed lol. Now I have 30 books, 21 of them are SK. Because of Pet sematary I'm now a reader. There could be other better SK books out there but Pet sematary will always have a special place in my heart

Great video, great presentation, good insights and entertaining. For me however it's 1 The Green Mile. 2 The Shining. 3 Christine. 4 Salem's Lot and 5 Pet Cemetery. I read the Green Mile in three or four mammoth sittings about ten years ago, literally didn't want to put it down. The film was great too. Well done keep up the good work!

Superb as usual! Two comments come to mind.
    1. I like following tier lists and rankings about SK. Yours is the only to rank Firestarter as best and it doesn't usually come in the first positions (though not the last either). I haven't read it yet though (now reading my 21st SK, Thinner, after the meh monster Nightmares and Dreamscapes ).
    2. I am not a native English speaker (¡español!) and I don't get why you call a love-or-hate book a marmite. Is that a UK thing??
    Thanks, my fav SK reviewer!

I'm currently so undecisive about what to read from him next. I've really enjoyed Misery, Dolores Claiborne and the Shining. But I really want to read some of his really horror intense books for this fall, that are not too long. Besides Pet Cemetery (it's on my tbr) can you please reccomend me one so I can get back into King's books. There are so many I get overwhelmed :D Thank you

I will say one of the marks of a great book which is longer is you don't realize how long it is. The first time I read The Stand was the abridged version which was still 800+ pages long. The second time was the unabridged version and I was probably even more captivated by it. It probably helped the first time reading The Stand I was in the 8th grade and the second time was just a few years ago). But The Stand is my favorite of King's (and in general, one of my favorite fiction books). You did get me to change my mind on IT though, I can't in good conscious have it quite as high as I did because of THAT scene (come on King, really?).

I recently finished Dreamcatcher and loved almost every bit of it, but I guess I can see where you're coming from. I still think it's really underrated, but the movie adaptation, good god... my thoughts on the movie are basically your thoughts on the book. It's so unbelievably terrible that I can't even describe it.

Well argued and great fun. Agree on a lot of things (The order of the Bill Hodges books for an example, also the high rating for The Dark Half and the love for The Long Walk), wildly disagree on others (Firestarter as the masterpiece!?)
My favourite three (just can't pick one):
    It
    The Stand
    11.22.63
My least favourite (that I remember well):
    The Regulators
    Gerald's Game
    Dreamcatcher

    1) 11/22/63
    2) IT - would be #1 if the ending 100 pages were better
    3) The Shining
    4) Misery
    5) The Stand
    6) The Dead Zone - last of his I read that I thought was great in this list.
    7) Mr Mercedes - it was decent
    8) Revival - was ok but didn’t like the ending

But it’s the hidden gems that I really appreciate…Desperation, Needful Things, Tommyknockers…. I’m still only about 2/3 of the way through his body of work. Have you read them all? Haven’t really read a clunker yet

    • @chibishoyo8416
      @chibishoyo8416 2 роки тому

@@otherworldsthanthese I personally think that the boy named Crow was Kafka's alter ego. There was a part in the book that says that he named himself Kafka because it translates to "crow" in another language (I can't really remember coz my memory is jumbled while reading this book 😭). Crows are associated with intelligence, braveness, and higher perspective (we can relate this to the part where the Crow repeatledly said to Kafka that he should be strong and the part where Kafka searches for the boy named Crow to answer a question). Aside from that, crows are also a totem of death which we can interpret that Kafka's past self had died when he decided to run away from home and take this new identity. I'm sorry I'm terrible at explaining things but I hope you get my point. 😂 I'd love to know your thoughts about the boy named Crow too because I think it was an interesting character to study and analyse.

I'm so glad that you made that comment about Rose Madder! I had such high hopes for the book and loved it to begin with. If it had remained the way it was, and even remotely realistic, I'd have been gripped. The supernatural elements just totally ruined it for me. Would have been much more interested to see them attempt to deal with the situation in a realistic way. Having it become supernatural seemed like a lazy solution imo
