Am I alone in thinking that illegal immigration is not really an issue? It’s been inflated by the previous government in an attempt to make it a ‘hot issue’ - but are you bothered by it, as you’re rightfully bothered by a crumbling NHS or a lack of teachers? I’m not. The Rwanda scheme was an obscene waste of money.

I agree, but I don't live in a poor area where there are lots of asylum seekers. I can understand the resentment in those places and sadly Braverman and Farage have exploited it. I just hope that Starmer is able to find a more positive way to deal with it.

Stop calling it illegal immigration! Do you not understand international law. You lot closed down ALL of the safe routes therefore immigrants HAVE to reach these shores to apply. Use just a little bit of common sense before you make these wild statements. THEIR APPLICATION HAS TO BE REFUSED AND THEY HAVE TO REFUSE TO LEAVE BEFORE THEY BECOME ILLEGAL.
      Now do you understand?

      @@mrd64here's a bright idea
      1. Why is asylum processing privatised?
      2. Why are we dumping asylum seekers in specific areas?
      3. Why do we have deprived areas?
Fixing these issues would fix the underlying conflicts, but you'll note that amongst naturalised Britons that there's more anti migrant rhetoric in areas *without* migrants than in areas with migrants

that depends on your definition of "illegal immigration". the left defines it as being in the country without being allowed to be in the country. the right defines it as everyone who isnt "invited" - so asylum seekers are illegal migrants, in the eyes of the right. "real" illegal migrants" are not a "real issue", i agree. asylum seekers on the other hand are a real issue. the reason you dont understand that, is the tory government. germany took in 1 million syrians, the uk none. germany took in 1 million ukrainians, the uk none. germany took in 500 000 afghans, the uk none etc. ... the reason asylum seekers are not "really an issue" in the uk is, that the tories refused to take them in... but how many million asylum seekers do you reckon does it take to make it a "real issue" in the uk?

Ol Max Headroom really needs to stop with the criminal gangs thing and take up France on their offer of processing centres there and employ loads of processing staff. Doing those things would eliminate the need for refugees to use criminal gangs if he really does want to target the so called criminal gangs the only criminal gang I know of has just left office.

As a Brit Pakistani, one thing that has always frustrated me about the 'immigration debate' (left and right) is how the 'immigration' issue is taken on face value and as an elision, it's never clear which, and is never properly disambiguated. We know immigration has always been a stand-in for the myriad of other issues. Brexit/Reform sentiment became a code for 'anti-immigrant' sentiment, but really it also includes recent + descendents of immigrants, and is largely a fear of 'foreign' cultures in England. There are indeed pockets of ghettoization esp in the mids/north, where there are acute problems of housing, public services, and yes also cultural in-cohesion. So let's confront and deal with all those issues on their own terms, inc. the cultural tensions.

    • @lindaj5492

You seem to have a very basic shallow understanding of refugee law and refugee realities since you automatically declare someone invalid for asylum simply based on their nationality; You don’t get to say a certain country is not at war (thus appears generally safe), therefore its citizens are ALL economic migrants.
      Processing claims is done on an individual case basis. People run away for all sorts of reasons outside warzones;
For example: Fear out of racial discrimination, ethnic violence, gang violence, police targeting, political repression, anti-gay laws, transphobia and killing of transgender people, governments that punish Atheists even with the death penalty, Terrorism, membership of a party or social group, honour killings, Climate Crisis refugees, and yes a part of them are poor and moving for better jobs. But please stop this idea of thinking only Afghans or Syrians qualify for protection.
A country can be a lovely summer vacation destination for Europeans but its local citizens can face very serious dangers under dictatorship making them unsafe.
We always say “Asylum is for people experiencing war and persecution” ➡️ these two categories are widely different.
      Do your research

I don't think what he said is a concern. If anything, I think he's trying to show that he will do what he said he would do - represent the electorate, whether they voted for him or not.
He's directly addressing a talking point in the right wing papers that will be on the minds of many of the people who voted - that "Labour are for open borders with no controls". This worries a lot of people (albeit unnecessarily because it's not true). By speaking on the points that concern them (& directly addressing claims in papers like the Spectator, the Hate Mail, and Telegraph that he will "promote lawlessness by not stopping people trafficking"), at his first press conference, as he does something that those papers will spin as "proof" that they were right (cancelling the Rwanda saga), he's trying to appease a wider audience.
Why? Because, yes, Labour got in, but 14% of votes went to Reform, and that shows that a lot of people are worried about immigration (not because it's actually a problem, but because the Tory press have been whipping up fear on the issue since Brexit).
The guy's a former barrister, he's trying to win over the whole jury.

He did say he'd set up a 'Border Force', but we all know that illegality thrives when a legal option is removed. Legal routes would remove the market from the people smugglers immediately. Surely he knows this? Solution must be two-fold: Legal policed routes provided, plus crackdown on smuggling gangs.
