Hi Katie, I would love it if you would do a quick breakdown on back flexibility as it's something my dance school doesn't put much emphasis on. Things like explaining which part of the back is stretching, which muscles can be found in your back, etc, is something I don't have much knowledge on. Thanks :)
I know this is late but look up hypoextension. You might have it. There's some great stuff on Pointe/Dance Magazinr and the forum Ballet Talk for Dancers.
This video is very helpful since I'm a terrible split person had a hard time with it in my young age . so now I know that it's best to do as many stretches as possible
I'm so thankful that I came across your channel! I have been wanting to do ballet and get the splits since last year but I wasn't able too. My dad says that I am too old to start ballet (I'm 15 going on 16) but I still think there is still a chance that I can get my flexibility back! You have motivated me to get my splits and I'm really so happy to have watched your vids!💓💓 Are you able to make videos on back flexiblity? Thank you❤
This is great! It's always been a dream of mine to do the splits. Almost got there a few years ago when I was doing a lot of yoga along with ballet. Consistency is key. Unfortunately I let it go for a couple years and lost a lot of flexibility. I'm 33 but one of those believers that it's never too late...at least to try! Thanks for this video... definitely motivated me to do some stretching, because who knows, right!? :)
As a teacher, and dancer, who is your age-- it's never too late! I'm set to do a RAD vocational exam in two weeks, with girls 20 years younger. I am not going to let that stop me. Keep moving! Keep dancing! The world needs your energy!
Hi Katie, I love how you explain things in such a practical way, it really helps. I'm not a dancer and I'm not going to be (slightly over 30 and 180 cm), but I really admire the ballet art and sometimes like to try things - in my own, tall way;-) I'm a big fan of yours and wish you all the best in the world :-)
Thanks for the video! Really helpful. Could you please give some tips about getting your spot correctly for pirouettes? I'm reallly struggling with that.
Do you (or anyone in the comments) have any tips to prevent the circular swinging of legs in tour jeté? I've always found that this movement tends to really throw me off in grand allegro. Gosh, this comment section is filled with questions and requests, yet you still manage to answer the great majority of them. Thanks for doing what you do - I love your channel, podcast and powhow classes!
Hello!! SoMy plan is to do this for a month long (all febuary) every night and see the results at the end of the month! And if I improve a lot I think I will do 2 months and just see how far I can get!! cause rn when I do the splits i ltterally just look like I'm lunging XD
That was great, thank you so much! I'm very close to achieving the splits, but I'm only able to touchdown when I'm suuuper warm. Now I'm getting serious and stretching more often, so this video is gonna help me a lot!
Hi Katie so ik how to do the splits but i just wanted to point out that ur knee isn't supposed to pass ur foot im new i just found and subscribed to ir channel yesterday can't wait till u reach 200k
Hiiii can u do a video on improving ur arch and balancing in passé and etc. and also the kinds of pointe shoes and describe them like what's better in your opinion :)) thank you
I'm so glad I found your videos! I restarted ballet after a 4 year hiatus so I'm really out of shape, but your videos have really helped! Thank you so much!
Hi I asked this question on the last video in more detail but you may not have seen it. I was wondering if there are any advice you would give me for improving a lot and getting the teacher's attention for getting Clara next year when you know there are other girls that are the favorites.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your advice and knowledge of dance and especially ballet! 😊 I’ve seen improvement in my technique, especially after learning the proper way to plié! Keep up the great work with these videos!
Hey Katie, this year I'm traveling all the way to London for my RAD exam. Would you please give us your advise for surviving a ballet exam in your next video/QnA? Greetings from Bulgaria!!
I have been trying for the splits since 1997 but I dont tend to get any farther down, though the reason I did was to lengthen out my stride as I am a runner, so with the way my legs built over the years I might be muscle bound that I cant, and I dont stretch all the time, maybe that is why I dont get all the way down.
That's one reason, you can use some massage devices, do a split (try at least) every single time you finish running. And check, maybe your back is curve and that's why you have to work always squared hip, and arched back on stretching
My problem in front splits is that even though I'm so close to the floor my hips not matter what I try are not 100% squared and my back leg turns out. No matter what I try I can't stop this leg from turning it just does it. Any pointers? :(
ChelseaJeanBentley I would always get a friend or the teacher to hold my hips down so that they got used to that position. Then I would work on strengthening my hip muscles to hold my hips square. It's like working on your turn out, it's not just about flexibility, it's about strengthening the muscles to hold your foot out in that position
I had the same problem. Then I realized it's actually the foot in the front that creeped too far which caused the imbalance. What I do now is from a lunge, going down, I first bend the knee in front, and let my pelvis get closer to the floor, then not moving anything else, straighten the front knee. Also, activating the hip muscles (especially the back one) really helps. And lastly, I put my hand above my hip, and press down a little bit (not too much of course, cuz you can tear something). Good luck with your splits!
I've only done the first one so far and I was watching loads of other vids I did not get lower but in this one I did I will update on the next one after I finish it
Hi Katie! Could you please do a tutorial on calypso leaps or how to improve your arches video. I just recently started doing pointe and we have a Christmas show coming up. I am doing a paquita variation on pointe but I am scared that at some point I might not get over my box. Btw I love you and your videos are really helpful
I know you did a video on Self Doubt, but I thought that this was different. See, I enjoy ballet, but lately, I've been so focused on correct technique that I forget to enjoy it and wind up miserable halfway through class. I'm afraid that if I let go and enjoy, I'll lose my technique. Do you know any tips for this? Leave you reply in the comments below
I just wanted to encourage you that finding the marriage of artistry and technique is something all dancers struggle with from time to time but you will find it! I think it can ebb and flow but I would let yourself focus on just enjoying the movement and finding the joy in dancing again. You will burn out very quickly if you make yourself miserable every class and nobody wants to watch a miserable perfect dancer they want to see humans dancing and expressing emotion! ( at least that is how I feel) There will always be something to improve upon but make sure that you don't lose your spark!
I love all your videos. You are so beautiful. I love this blue dance wearing in the video. Where did you get it or what is your favorite place to buy your dance outfits? all of them look gorgeous on you:))))))
I've never realized until watching this that I've been cheating my hamstring stretches for years, which explains why I'm able to touch my chest to my leg but aren't actually able to bring my leg up that high in developpe. I just know that I'm cheating my hip flexor and quads too as back back legs are really low in split jumps. Do you have any suggestions on how to correct it (like if there are common improper way of stretching back legs)? Also, my middle split is basically non-existent and I don't feel like the lying on the back thing seems to be helping me much. Is that just me being impatient and I should just keep at it?
hi kathryn I'm from the biggest fan of you from Egypt before my right leg was very flexible and more better than my left leg i do extremely oversplits without warming up I feel so bad pain in my hamstring and now I can't achieve any of the easiest stretches that i was doing before i wanna your advice
Hi I'm new at ballet as adult beginners. However I am working on my flexibility the middle splits is harder. Do you have more tips in terms on just middle splits where u can just do without having someone to push u. As some of the positions if you don't have partner to help u cannot progress further.
Evelien Van Oppens, wen I was first getting my right split I let my self have a brake and it helped me get it further and more consistently. I think I was just over stenching my self
hey i was wondering cuz you seem to be rly into this but how do you properly recover/ take care of your body !! like i know of epsom salt baths and ice baths but what do you think are the best things to do rly reset your body almost and kinda restore it after a hard week or so
Hi Katie! Love your tips and they help me alott!! But i got something I need some tips on. How do i trane My feet/toes? To go from flex to toe to point? (This sounds way better in Swidish, haha) love
i have a really hard time even putting my elbows down on the ground in side splits, and i still don't understand quite what muscles that part has to do with. but it sounds like inner thighs and hips would likely be good to concentrate on.
how long would you suggest stretching each day? also thank you so much i have very tight hips and they hold me back a lot so hopefully this will help me!
Do you have to have perfect turnout to get a perfect middle split? Also I have my calves and knees on the ground in my middle splits from standing position, but I can't get my thighs to touch the ground no matter what I do. Any idea which muscles I should stretch to get flat?
Hi Katie, I want to incorporate stretches in my daily routine, what kind of warm up can I do if it is just for getting my muscles warm enough to stretch and improve my flexibility? Love your videos and podcast!!!!
I am not being able to get up after splitting (nearly) , how am I gonna get out of split? Btw, the hip flexor tip is very useful. I was trying to extend my knee. But I am having trouble with get out of extending legs.
Hello Kathryn, I love your videos!!! This is a very good one too. and I have one question on middle splits. No matter how much I try, I cannot perform a middle split, because I feel some tingling high up on my right inner thigh and don't want to push it too much to avoid injuring my leg. Is there any advice I can follow to improve my flexibility on the inner thigh of this leg? Thanks a lot!
Love Love Love this video! You are looking amazing! You've always looked beautiful, but you have this presence about you that exudes your inner happiness with your appearance. (Having hypothyroidism myself - I understand that's a hard thing to achieve) So proud of you and this video is super helpful - I adore that Yumiko on you! :) Love & Gratitude!
Hey so I have scoliosis that twists my back instead of a curve (this also causes uneven hips for me) and I have been doing all these stretches for years now and my middle splits haven't gotten any better. Could it be possible that my scoliosis is preventing me from going any further? Ps I love all of your videos so much and u do such a good job explaining this
at the least you need to warm up a little bit before, like a few minutes of jumping jacks or something similar. without warming up you could injure yourself and warming up just lets you go a lot farther/deeper into your stretches. another option is doing it after a hot shower or bath.
It really depends on your body type (naturally flexible not flexible etc), but you have to be very very warm, or you risk tearing a muscle and loosing flexibility. It's best to stretch the splits within 15 minutes after finishing a ballet class or a good workout. I had a 2 hour ballet class, am really flexible, took a hot shower, but I still ended up injuring a muscle in my hips since I stretched an hour after class and was not warm enough.
I have the same thing I can nearly get my head on my knee for my right leg but I only need to lean forward a couple inches to really stretch my left leg. I stretch them individually because when I push the left too much to stretch the right leg, my left leg will actually pop out and back in, but it's pretty uncomfortable.
I don't have any soreness at the knee. That's why I stretch them individually now. I do have snapping hip syndrome when doing delvelopés a la second and also when lying on my back with legs up and then opening them to the side, which does involve the IT band as well I know. It probably doesn't help that I have a bit of lumbar lordosis but I think I have been making some real progress with that at the moment. It doesn't hurt as much to lie down I don't think and once my hip flexors are loose enough to lower both legs without the hip moving then that will definitely help
hello, i have really bad turnouts and my teacher kind of gave up on me and even though i have watched your video for improving turnouts i can't get them past 150 degrees. what should i do ?
Hi I am 13years old and just started ballet, I am only able to go to class twice a month do you know what I could do to move to an intermediate class? I love practicing but I feel like I am missing out when I am not present.
Hey, I just started watching your channel and I'm trying to do open splits but I just can't. I have never been flexible like I can't even touch my toes. What should I do??? Please I'm starting to get made fun of because I can't touch my toes or do the splits.
Split turned out or in? I've had instructors that would say people were fake dancers if they turned out hips during a split, alternatively I've had teachers just happy someone could get on the ground
Hi Katie! I was just wondering, could you do a video on back flexibility ?
Hi Katie, I would love it if you would do a quick breakdown on back flexibility as it's something my dance school doesn't put much emphasis on. Things like explaining which part of the back is stretching, which muscles can be found in your back, etc, is something I don't have much knowledge on. Thanks :)
omg that would be super helpful. I hadn't been able to stretch my back for the past 2 yrs due to an injury...
YEES! I need that too
Yes!🙏🏻👌🏻
You are one of the best ballet UA-camrs!!!! 😃😄🦄💃🎵🎶
She is my favorite
This does work! Do it a couple times and you will see results!
( for the normal splits) OMGGGGGG,!!!!!!!
Kayleigh Pollock how long did it take!?
How long???
vid on straightening knees please ... my legs dont looks straight even when fully extended
racheal horas pull your quads up it’s really hard work but it will properly straighten your legs 😊 good luck xx
I have the same problem so I went to a physical therapist and it turns out my right knee cap is rotated inward so i couldn't straighten my knee.
Ingrid Johnson, I feel for you, I also had that problem (well, I still have it but I don't dance so much anymore... well not in a professional way)
I know this is late but look up hypoextension. You might have it. There's some great stuff on Pointe/Dance Magazinr and the forum Ballet Talk for Dancers.

You are definitely NOT too old! I hope you started back!!❤
Im 5 years late but you can do anything you set your mind to. I hope you did it cuz it makes YOU happy !
I could only do my split on my left side and did these exercises and got my right split right away thanks so much !!
This is great! It's always been a dream of mine to do the splits. Almost got there a few years ago when I was doing a lot of yoga along with ballet. Consistency is key. Thank you so much! I will DEFINITELY do a video on tour jeté. It's easier to explain in a video.
I really appreciate it, Katie.
Yes please this messes me up so much after completely nailing the rest of a combo!

Hi Katie! I am an Irish dancer and March in a marching band, and this works so well! Thank you so much for all of your helpful tips and tricks!
I'm so glad I found your videos! I restarted ballet after a 4 year hiatus so I'm really out of shape, but your videos have really helped! Thank you so much!
Great tutorial!! Thank you!!!❤❤❤
Thank u so much! This video was very helpful and I saw results the first day !!:)
I am about to go on pointe next year and your videos really help please make more
I'm coming back to dance after a year out due to a hip injury and this has been so helpful

Me too! I'm going down to the RAD in December, an exam video would be really helpful
***** thanks for the info ,would you mind contacting you if I have a certain question
Could you do video on how to get the splits very quickly without putting strain on your muscles
THANK YOU SO MUCH KATHRYN! 😍

IT`S A GREAT CLASS!
I LOVE YOU thank you so much your videos help me dance so soooo much better yayy!
Thank you so much for making this!! Hopefully it will help me with my middle split. I have my left and right split but I just can't do middle😄😬

thank you for this Kathryn!!! I love you

Hi Katie! Could you please do a tutorial on calypso leaps or how to improve your arches video. I just recently started doing pointe and we have a Christmas show coming up. Both of those video topics would be super helpful for me
Unless you're flat footed, getting over your box is a matter of having the correct fitted shoe and strengthen, check out Katie's pointe vid!
Could you do a tour jete video? Like how to improve it. It would be very helpful!!❤️
Great vid.Thanks for the tips👍😊
Make more videos about stretches pleasseeeee💕
this was extremely helpful!

The side splits tips are very helpful in last then a week I got my side splits! But do you have another way for front splits? Thanks!
it really helpful! I want to become a great dancer like you one day!
can you make a video on how to work with less than ideal turnout?? loved this video btw!
Do you have any advice on over splits? Thanks!💕
Love your lessons.
Thanks for sharing. :)
you're a hero
Active subtitles plissss i don't speak english, and i really love your videos!!
Please make a video on making your pointe shoes last longer! I cannot afford to buy new pointe shoes every few weeks.
I have my split it just hurts when ever I go into it. Do I need to stretch lot more than I am?
I love all your videos. You are so beautiful. I love this blue dance wearing in the video. Where did you get it or what is your favorite place to buy your dance outfits? all of them look gorgeous on you:))))))

You mention that there may be a video that uses a foam roller to work out tight muscles. I can't seem to find that one. Can you help me find it?
how long would you suggest stretching each day? also thank you so much i have very tight hips and they hold me back a lot so hopefully this will help me!
Haha I don't do ballet but decided to try this - when I stretched legs apart when on back, they only went out to about a 35 degree angle 😂
Do you have to have perfect turnout to get a perfect middle split? Also I have my calves and knees on the ground in my middle splits from standing position, but I can't get my thighs to touch the ground no matter what I do. Any idea which muscles I should stretch to get flat?
Ok thanks. I'll take a look.
Hi Katie,

Could it be possible that my scoliosis is preventing me from going any further? Ps I love all of your videos so much and u do such a good job explaining this
It could be possible, I'd see if you can go to a physio and get it checked out!
Hi! Can you just go for this routine or do you have to warm up for like 10 minutes or do you have to do a whole work out before?
at the least you need to warm up a little bit before, like a few minutes of jumping jacks or something similar. without warming up you could injure yourself and warming up just lets you go a lot farther/deeper into your stretches. another option is doing it after a hot shower or bath.

I had a 2 hour ballet class, am really flexible, took a hot shower, but I still ended up injuring a muscle in my hips since I stretched an hour after class and was not warm enough.
"You'll definitively definitely....(probably) get there.
Emphasis on probably lol.
My left hip never wants to turn out as nicely as the right one! I have the hardest time doing the front splits but no problems with the side.

Hi, I'm wondering if this will work for me as I'm 50 - a bit late for flexibility. I could do one way splits when I was a child, so any advice?
I have really tite hip what are ways I could loosen them?
hello, i have really bad turnouts and my teacher kind of gave up on me and even though i have watched your video for improving turnouts i can't get them past 150 degrees. what should i do ?
Hi I am 13years old and just started ballet, I am only able to go to class twice a month do you know what I could do to move to an intermediate class? I love practicing but I feel like I am missing out when I am not present.
If you can do the Split, can you do A penche or an illusion?
definitely definitely probably hehehe one of my fav things to say too haha
Hey, I just started watching your channel and I'm trying to do open splits but I just can't. I have never been flexible like I can't even touch my toes. What should I do??? Please I'm starting to get made fun of because I can't touch my toes or do the splits.
Does it hurt. It does to me
So can anyone get there middle split?
I hope this helps🤪🙄💓 her legs looked creepy at 4:00 the way they were moving
That sadly made no difference in my left leg forward split and I already have my right splits but I cants go down in my left side
When I stretch for splits the muscle right underneath my knee hurts more than anything else. Is that part of the hamstring?
That muscle is your (whole) hamstring.
J K Pegasisters Thank you!
Cora Vukosich No worries! ^ - ^
Split turned out or in? I've had instructors that would say people were fake dancers if they turned out hips during a split, alternatively I've had teachers just happy someone could get on the ground
Hii
how to improve your turnout?
I lost my ability to split 4-5 years ago. I used to be really flexible
Its not correct that you need 25/30 seconds. A minimum of 10 seconds is basically enough
samuel bakker i feel like if you want to be more efficient, 30 seconds does make a difference!
my 2 year old sister could do the splits.
