In context- the bbc tried to remove this song from the last night of the proms. Apparently it’s references to Britons never being slaves was offensive because at some point Britain had taken part in the slave trade… like literally every single nation and race on the planet… but unlike most nations and races on the planet the British actively sought to end it and were often in conflict with nations and colonies that continued the disgusting institution. Be proud, Joel, that of all nations on the planet though very few fought an actual civil war that ripped apart their country and sent hundreds of thousands of people of one race to their death to unslave another race. Slavery does continue to exist - in fact sheer numbers wise there are more slaves today than when this song was written. But they are not in the west (and when slavery is detected here in the western world it is decried as the abomination that it is).
Yes, We just have to persuade the strange contingent of America that they can NEVER be taken seriously if carry on with the insane prejudice they harbour towards people of different coloured skin. I am sure if the world used the same system that birthed a New South Africa we could achieve some progress.
Absolute nonsense. The British slave trade was genocidal and a huge stain in the country. Silly patriotic songs only hide the reality the brutality and racism intrinsic in British history.
@@Chris-mk1wh blah blah blah. As it is a stain on the history of every other single nation on earth - and race etc. Or is it ok when other races do it?

Looking through the telescope when she came on was a reference to the battle of Copenhagen........On April 2, 1801 Nelson put a telescope to his blind eye and said, “I really do not see the signal” - the order from his commanding admiral, Sir Hyde Parker, to withdraw from the Battle of Copenhagen. These are the correct words from a poem written by James Thomson in 1740 and set to the music of Thomas Arne as part of a masque ( courtly entertainment) called Alfred, about King Alfred the Great, who was an Anglo-Saxon king who reigned from 871 to 899. When Britain first, at Heaven’s command Arose from out the azure main; This was the charter of the land, And guardian angels sang this strain: Rule Britannia! Britannia rule the waves; Britons never will be slaves. In the chorus, “will be slaves” is now sometimes sung: “shall be slaves”, but the words above are the original words.
John what is your source, I only ask because I have read the original and is says "Britons never again will be slaves", Thomas wrote this with full knowledge of our history.
@@carlchapman4053 Hi Carl, I have the full work “Alfred” on CD. It was recorded in 1998 and features the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and Philharmonia Chorale. The CD comes with the usual notes.
Fantastic to see the reaction of this American, and you see how youngsters can be impressed with something so truly "old-fashioned" (?) British - in all its humour, pump and circumstance and joy ! We love the British for this (says a European), because it's so classy while being funny. Only the British can put a show on in such a way. Bravo !
i saw my favourite band ELP at The Albert Hall in 1992 and I can honestly say it's THE most amazing concert hall in the world .. when you walk into the auditorium you are literally stepping into a time machine and it takes your breath away ... thanks Joel for another brilliant video!

Lyrics Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves! Britons never, never, never shall be slaves. When Britain first, at heaven's command, Arose from out the azure main, This was the charter of the land, And Guardian Angels sang this strain: The nations not so blest as thee Must, in their turn, to tyrants fall, While thou shalt flourish great and free: The dread and envy of them all. Still more majestic shalt thou rise, More dreadful from each foreign stroke, As the loud blast that tears the skies Serves but to root thy native oak. Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame; All their attempts to bend thee down Will but arouse thy generous flame, But work their woe and thy renown. To thee belongs the rural reign; Thy cities shall with commerce shine; All thine shall be the subject main, And every shore it circles, thine. The Muses, still with freedom found, Shall to thy happy coasts repair. Blest isle! with matchless beauty crowned, And manly hearts to guard the fair. Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves! Britons never, never, never shall be slaves
I performed during the proms season, when I played as 1st violin with the National Youth Orchestra, between 1988 and 1993, and playing in that season at the Royal Albert Hall was a phenomenal experience. Some of the best experiences of my life. Something I would recommend is the performance of Barber's Adagio for strings, a couple of days after 9/11, which coincided with the last night of the proms. It was a truly moving experience and showed our own solidarity with our American friends
For at least 7 years I attended the Last Night at the Proms in Hyde Park with a group of 5 to 7 families together with our champagne picnics, plus usually about 70,000 other people all waving flags from all over the world, bloody fantastic and made me very proud to be British. 2009 was definitely one of the better years.
It's nice to see an American give a good review of this special year of the Proms. Every Brit is swelling with patriotism and tears in their eyes!! Thank you!! I've seen one other where a couple were clueless.
the WOKE brigade have tried having this song banned, due to the line "Britons never, never shall be slaves". it has been pointed out to them, that in fact it was Britain that stopped slavery throughout the entire Empire over 200yrs ago. even today the Royal Navy patrol the African coast stopping slave ships heading to other African ports. have you reacted to "Jerusalem" at the Proms yet?
Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves, Britain's never, never, never shall be slaves! Soooo great... TY Josh?? Is that right... I think it might be. Sooo awesome... as a Brit sitting listening... what else could I do but sing at the top of my voice!! lol.. Fabulous Josh, Happy New Year....Jan, 2022!

Brilliant to see as my two neighbours play in the symphony orchestra, a violinist and a cellist and they've been doing it for around 20yrs. They are also the greatest neighbours.
many of us are not vocal experts but like you we just KNOW when something is of the highest caliber. Last Night of The Proms is in two havles. The first will be an arrangement of an orchestrial piece done by the invited conductor. I is considered a great honour to conduct the last night. Then in the second half it goes wild the conductor makes a speech normally with a lot of humour and then the standards like Rule Britannia, Land of Hope and Glory, Jerusalem, Pomp and Circumstance ad the National Anthem are played and sung witht the audience. I may have got some of that the wrong way round but you get the jist of it. Its one time when we do get to be proud to be British and shout it (or sing it) as loud as possible.
It is BRITAIN - I - A - This one of the Great shows every year in London and if you ever get a ticket to this event you will be a very lucky person. You might even sell that ticket for 500 dollers.
Sarah Connolly knocks this out of the park as a last night of the proms evening. "Though" it has to be said that each year offers something unique. I like the later years versions where the night of music is simulcast to different locations in Ireland (Titanic Launch Dock) Locations throughout the UK, Wales and Scotland. All make for a very nostalgic evenings entertainment. I like to see the span across the different generations who deliver their own chorus voices to Land of Hope and Glory, Jerusalem. Once I watch one I usually have to view the others as I'm in the mood.
"Rule Britannia" is a very emotional piece of music and very powerful, however "Land of Hope and Glory" is my favourite go-to traditional song when I think of England, it should be the British national anthem. I love the way it "builds" and blasts the roof off right at the end on these promenade concerts. Last night of the Proms is on my bucket. I get the feeling Joel you are a big fan of the UK... maybe the stork dropped you off in the wrong country...LOL! Brian
Sarah Cononley was singing Opera and without a microphone 🎤 🤣 The last night of The Proms aka a 6 to 8 week festival of classical music celebrations. Ends with the last night and the public join in. Hence the righteous cordial celebrations. Because the previous few weeks were very quiet. Over the preceding concerts. This happens every year in the 🇬🇧 Pop concerts also happen in Hyde Park. Scotland and Northern Ireland. Every summer concert ends with the last night of the Prom. Short for Promenade Festival.
Went to the last night of the proms years ago. Was amazing, really made me proud to be a British. Our history, good and bad, is amazing. This tiny island had the largest empire (with all its horror), ruled 1/4 of the globe and dominated the rest of it for 300 years.
I''m grateful to have stumbled upon this video and your comments. The repetition of the song is a tradition when people are moved by music. An encore. If I were a musician, I would be thrilled to get your reaction. I'm not even sure how to interpret "Its.Jps" so I don't know your name, but you make me happy.
The important thing to remember is the song says " Britannia rule the waves" never "Rules the waves" That would be boastful. There is no final "S" Britain's guardian Angels are urging her to go out and rule the waves. As an Englishman I like to think the Royal Navy has always protected the weak. I would look for the words now. David
Yes we certainly did for a couple of centuries up to perhaps the end of the 2nd world war when our friends the Americans took over, but it would have been boastful to sing of such. @@soniatwortowen9494
The venue is The Royal Albert Hall which although built in 1871 has the most incredible acoustics. As a young boy, many, many years ago I had the pleasure and the honour to see my late mother sing Soprano with the Philharmonic performing Handel's Messiah. The Hallelujah chorus still gives me chills and I heartily recommend that you give it a listen.
The Last Night is always a light hearted evening, where the audience really gets involved, gets dressed up and sings along to a whole bunch of patriotic songs. You have to watch Land of Hope and Glory too, another mass audience participation number. Enjoy
Its great seeing your reactions to these events, I agree it its a wonderful performance. May I suggest you view Juan Diego Flores, the Peruvian tenor, dressed as an Inca King singing Rule Britannia at the last night Proms, he's fantastic.
The audience on the floor can bring in 'bangers' fire crackers, that's the bangs you here . on the floor, the promenades also bring a picnic, wine, drinks, sit on the floor in the circle of the Albert Hall while the boxes fill . As a broke student I have been to many concerts, the air is electric.......Wish you were here !
The final night of the Proms is the ticket to get. I have never been in the Royal Albert Hall for this, but I was in Hyde Park for the final night in 2017.
It's traditional to sing the last verse as an encore, which is what happened here. The lyrics: Rule, Britannia! Joel, the last night of the proms is the last of the annual British classical concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in London, July - September, and tendsbto be rather informal for the audience, sometimes broadcast across the 4 UK nations in public parks and is absolute fun! Book yourself to go if you can and you eill never forget that fabulous experience all your life. Been several times, danced and waved flags in that glorious moshpit, I will never forget it!
The lyrics were written by James Thomson - a Scotsman. We will always be united in our musical history, and that's what I love about the proms. They bring all sorts of people together and unites us all through music.
You must watch the famous but sadly late Russian Baritone Boris Hvorostovsky singing Votre Toast from Carmen at the last night of the proms. Not only was he one of the worlds best baritones, in my opinion the best, but the ladies (and some men?) found him very attractive and seductive. At the end he reaches inside his shirt for a handkerchief and pulls out a Union Jack to an enormous roar from the crowd. Classic!

Last Night at the Proms was/is?? broadcast to Denmark - and perhaps the rest of Europe - or worldwide??. We had subtexts so we could sing along - I loved it! - My daughter is frequently playing some of the "Sea SongsL" with her orchestra.
The Proms isn’t limited to classical music. They have done lots of popular music theme nights. There was one honouring composer John Williams who wrote the score for the Indiana Jones films, Star Wars, Superman, Jurassic Park and Harry Potter. I grew up doing theatre and loved the Proms’ tributes to musicals.
I think it's about time we start a fundraising initiative to get you over here to the UK, Joel - including a visit to the Royal Albert Hall to watch the Last Night of the Proms. ;)
The Naval Defence Act 1889 was an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It received the Royal Assent on 31 May 1889 and formally adopted the "two-power standard" and increased the United Kingdom's naval strength. The standard called for the Royal Navy to maintain a number of battleships at least equal to the combined strength of the next two largest navies in the world, which then were France and Russia. We really did rule the waves.

BBC? Say no more....
@@tozmom615 Couldn't care less. UK committed genocidal acts against slaves. Then they sing how great ruling the world was and Empire. If you don't see how uncomfortable that is then it says more about you than me.
Brings me out in goosebumps every time this is played/sung at The Last Night of the Proms. This was sheer class.
Britain was at war with France and the Royal Navy enforced a blockade of neutral ships trading with France.
How wonderful to see a young American enjoying a song (and a style of singing) from way, way back in 1740. Well done dude !
I am loving the Last Night Of Prom series at the moment Joel & I really appreciate you reacting to the UK 🇬🇧 as a whole & this prom reaction had so much energy into it & I was singing it with happiness & I can see you were enjoying this one by you dancing to it. A huge congratulations 🎉 on your 30K subs. Sending love to you & your family all the way from Somerset, England, UK 🇬🇧.
I just love 💕 every we do like this I’m so proud to be British I would never want to be anything else great reaction Love from Denise in Yorkshire England 🏴💕💕👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧👏👏👏👏👏🥰👋
Did you notice the outside audiences in Hyde Park and HIllsborough, Co. Down ? This is Proms in the Park and cities in the UK have prominent artists on in large parks and also have a live link to the Albert Hall for the last night. It's really popular.
Much love to you from England 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🏴🏴🏴. God bless America ❤️👊
These are the correct words from a poem written by James Thomson in 1740 and set to the music of Thomas Arne as part of a masque ( courtly entertainment) called Alfred, about King Alfred the Great, who was an Anglo-Saxon king who reigned from 871 to 899.
When Britain first, at Heaven’s command
Arose from out the azure main;
This was the charter of the land,
And guardian angels sang this strain:
Rule Britannia!
Britannia rule the waves;
Britons never will be slaves.
Bravo !
You picked a great year for this time Sarah was brilliant in her Admiral costume.
i saw my favourite band ELP at The Albert Hall in 1992 and I can honestly say it's THE most amazing concert hall in the world .. when you walk into the auditorium you are literally stepping into a time machine and it takes your breath away ... thanks Joel for another brilliant video!
Fantastic video, love your channel, JPS. Please everyone, support this tremendous chap on Patreon. Thank you, sir, for your content.
This gave me goosebumps and I have heard it so much. An ex Brit living in Australia last 40 years though. But a very proud Brit.
Agree she did an awesome job.
Sarah Connolly is one of the world's finest mezzo sopranos. She was singing the piece in the eighteenth-century fashion.
It was meant to be Britannica Herself singing this song, so yes Miss Connolly did a beautiful interpretation of a Goddess.
Lyrics
Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves!
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.
When Britain first, at heaven's command,
Arose from out the azure main,
This was the charter of the land,
And Guardian Angels sang this strain:
The nations not so blest as thee
Must, in their turn, to tyrants fall,
While thou shalt flourish great and free:
The dread and envy of them all.
Still more majestic shalt thou rise,
More dreadful from each foreign stroke,
As the loud blast that tears the skies
Serves but to root thy native oak.
Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame;
All their attempts to bend thee down
Will but arouse thy generous flame,
But work their woe and thy renown.
To thee belongs the rural reign;
Thy cities shall with commerce shine;
All thine shall be the subject main,
And every shore it circles, thine.
The Muses, still with freedom found,
Shall to thy happy coasts repair.
Blest isle! with matchless beauty crowned,
And manly hearts to guard the fair.
Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves!
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves
Loving your videos! Have you checked out The RAF Red Arrows? Take a look at their American Tour 2019.
Bless you. What a totally charming young man. Bravo!
It's nice to see an American give a good review of this special year of the Proms. Every Brit is swelling with patriotism and tears in their eyes!! Thank you!! I've seen one other where a couple were clueless.
Joel you will love England When you come here !!!!!!
Love the UK, we had to beat them down to get started, but we are truly brothers.
the WOKE brigade have tried having this song banned, due to the line "Britons never, never shall be slaves". it has been pointed out to them, that in fact it was Britain that stopped slavery throughout the entire Empire over 200yrs ago. even today the Royal Navy patrol the African coast stopping slave ships heading to other African ports.
have you reacted to "Jerusalem" at the Proms yet?
Not to mention beating away the Barbary Pirates from making us into slaves.
The woke brigade need to piss off under a rock and stay there!!
JPS ,admit it you really want to be British,,u don't need to be British ,just come here and soak it up🇬🇧💜💐👄
Great reaction and glad you liked our stirring little ditty..The conductor there I’m happy to tell you is American..What a good job he made of it..
All the best from Blighty🇺🇸🇬🇧👍
Brilliant to see as my two neighbours play in the symphony orchestra, a violinist and a cellist and they've been doing it for around 20yrs. They are also the greatest neighbours.
SUGGESTION: Sailor's Hornpipe - Last Night Of The Proms 2006 --- this video has lots of fun audience interactions in it.
It’s one of our great evenings Night of the Proms brilliant,
rule britania wat a song tears me up this is when ime proud to be scottish
Nice review. I like the way you watch and don't keep interrupting like some reviewers.
many of us are not vocal experts but like you we just KNOW when something is of the highest caliber.
Congrats on your 30 .000 subscribers Joel well done
Brian
Happy New Year buddy
Sarah Cononley was singing Opera and without a microphone 🎤 🤣 The last night of The Proms aka a 6 to 8 week festival of classical music celebrations. Ends with the last night and the public join in. Hence the righteous cordial celebrations. Because the previous few weeks were very quiet. Over the preceding concerts. This happens every year in the 🇬🇧 Pop concerts also happen in Hyde Park. Scotland and Northern Ireland. Every summer concert ends with the last night of the Prom. Short for Promenade Festival.
Seen Sarah Connolly many times at The Royal Opera House here in Londin but this was a lot of fun!
David
Britain did rule the waves once upon a time
Yes we certainly did for a couple of centuries up to perhaps the end of the 2nd world war when our friends the Americans took over, but it would have been boastful to sing of such.

That was really good. Also see Rene Fleming.
Joel , it the Audience letting off bangers & squeakers ! Never say the British aren't patriotic 🙂 glad you liked it.
The final night of the Proms is the ticket to get. I have never been in the Royal Albert Hall for this, but I was in Hyde Park for the final night in 2017.
The second half of the ‘Last Night of the Proms’ is about as far removed from classical music as you can get.
It's 'classical music' that is home grown!
It's traditional to sing the last verse as an encore, which is what happened here. The lyrics:
Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves!
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.
When Britain first, at heaven's command,
Arose from out the azure main,
This was the charter of the land,
And Guardian Angels sang this strain:
The nations not so blest as thee
Must, in their turn, to tyrants fall,
While thou shalt flourish great and free:
The dread and envy of them all.
Still more majestic shalt thou rise,
More dreadful from each foreign stroke,
As the loud blast that tears the skies
Serves but to root thy native oak.
Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame;
All their attempts to bend thee down
Will but arouse thy generous flame,
But work their woe and thy renown.
To thee belongs the rural reign;
Thy cities shall with commerce shine;
All thine shall be the subject main,
And every shore it circles, thine.
The Muses, still with freedom found,
Shall to thy happy coasts repair.
Blest isle! with matchless beauty crowned,
And manly hearts to guard the fair.
Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves!
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves
You'll recognise Land of Hope and Glory from your graduation, where for some reason its played ;)
The Royal Albert Hall, where the Proms is staged, is an amazing place. The acoustics are out of this world
And the organ is just superb!
Commenting here 5 months later...Did you watch them singing Jerusalem?
You've just got to.
Rule Britannia is from an Opera called "Alfred" by Thomas Arne first performed in 1740.
This made me as excited as you, not only because of the song, but from Sarah. She's magnificent in every way.
I cry with pride to my hear our nation sing as one
Jerusalem is a must listen.and the 'a' in Britannia is a short vowel sound not a long one as you're pronouncing it 😊
GOOSEBUMPS ALL OVER !! BRILLIANT !! GREAT TO BE BRITISH.
Most of the songs/pieces in the second half of Last Night of The Proms have an encore.
G'day mate. I'm a Nozzi but tears run down my cheeks every year viewing the Proms. Thanks mate.
The lyrics were written by James Thomson - a Scotsman. We will always be united in our musical history, and that's what I love about the proms. They bring all sorts of people together and unites us all through music.
If you want a true British Naval anthem seek out "Heart of Oak"
Fuck ! I love your channel from a 60’s something Australian
Classic!
She is an opera singer lad……….of course she can reach high notes……Night at the proms is England at its best ,we need more of this.XXX
The most beautiful tune ever written, frequently played by the military.
Janet Baker Dido's Lament.
'i vow to thee, my country' is an absolutely beautiful song, I highly recommend it. 🏴
This is my favourite ever performance of this classic, always brings a tear to these old eyes.
You’re obviously a huge fan of Opera ,,Operetta.
I’m hoping you are looking forward to seeing the Spectacular show put on this year for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. 70 Years on the Throne.
Have a look at some of the Golden Jubilee celebrations,,,for instance the Flotilla on the Thames.
Happy New Year. Joel from John LONDON.
Last Night at the Proms was/is?? broadcast to Denmark - and perhaps the rest of Europe - or worldwide??. We had subtexts so we could sing along - I loved it! - My daughter is frequently playing some of the "Sea SongsL" with her orchestra.
Mega goose bumps! Rule Brittania! So pleased you enjoyed that. Happy New Year. D x
Now I know Sarah can break glass that was epic thank you JPS you really rock .
thank you fr your respect
Look at "Over the Hills and Far Away", another patriotically British song, and the theme of the Sharpe TV series
Oh, the Last Night of the Proms, always so fabulous
Watch 2012 Land of hope and glory at Royal Albeet Hall . Land of Hope and Glory used to be England's National Anthem
