"Climb Every Mountain" is a piece taken from the Muscial & Movie "Sound of Music". If you liked this one, you better get the DVD or CD or whatever for the soundtrack to 'Sound of Music'. Written by Rogers & Hammerstein. The movie starred (among others) Christopher Plummer and Julie Andrews.

In the Original production of The Sound of Music in London it had Constance Shacklock in the role of the Mother Superior. When her husband died she never hit that high note at the end of the song ever again. I should know, I was one of those Von Trapp kids in the London production.

Susan Bullock, one of UK's most sought after Dramatic Sopranos... a true Opera Star. 'Climb Ev'ry Mountain' is from Rodgers & Hammerstein's Musical which debuted on Broadway in 1959, and 1961 in London's West End.... and as the award winning movie, in 1965 starring Julie Andrews and Peggy Wood as Mother Abbess who sings this song.

You have such a beautiful soul Joel, I really hope you get to come over to the UK one day and experience some of the things you are reacting to. From the little things from making a cup of tea, beans on toast and Digestive Biscuits to experiencing traditions, culture and music be this the latest or of the more classical kind. Wishing you the best for 2022!

The Proms are a general Summer Music Festival and the Last Night is always dominated by a great soloist with huge orchestral accompaniment. The second half of the programme is the patriotic anthems, usually 'Jerusalem', 'Rule Britannia', 'Land of Hope and Glory', 'Songs of the Fleet', 'Pomp and Circumstance Marches' etc.

That singer reaching that high note is almost as impressive as a cute handsome young American man reaching the very low notes with his deep voice :) Anyway, now you need to watch the whole of the film "Sound of Music" (1965) which is a classic traditional favourite film. It is compulsory for everybody in the UK to watch "The Sound of Music" at least once a year, every year at Christmas time, otherwise the universe will explode.

Hi Joel; The Proms Season consists of about 75+ concerts betweem July and September each year - mostly in the Albert Hall. You'll find everything in genre terms: all of it - symphonic, choral, ensemble, modern, classic, early, baroque, jazz, light entertainment, films music night, ..you name t - it's there usually. The 'Last Night' is a traditional evening - first half varies - second half all the same each year. Basically it's about music. Been going since the Twenties. Biggie is the availability of the standing room for near zero prices - students love it. And queue.!
BY THE WAY. I watch this because of you. You have a special joy, curiousity, humility and humour. Keep hold of it. It's precious. The great gifts of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, self-control etc ( check your Bible..) are the life givers. Just ask for them - and you live .

The Proms is the worlds largest Classical Music festival held over I think 40 nights in London every year! The last night is a mixture of popular classical, Opera and Patriotic music! it has an amazing atmosphere live! I went one year and HM Queen was there! The Last night I believe is broadcast live worldwide you should be able to watch it?!

I'm sure others have made these points, but Ill add mine in case anything has been missed. Both the songs you have featured are from musical shows, You'll never walk alone is from Carousel and Climb every Mountain from The Sound of Music. The Proms are mainly about classical music but do feature other genres. They often feature a night of Broadway either with a range of songs from shows or sometimes a choral version of a particular show. Such as Kiss me Kate I recall was one they did. If you search Proms Broadway then a lot of these features come up. The proms take place in the Royal Albert Hall and the Last Night is a special concert that has a whole range of songs that always feature, mostly patriotic songs. It is a real prize to get a ticket for the floor area of the Royal Albert Hall for the last night. That's when you see all the flags etc. Nowadays they hold simultaneous concerts in a number of big centres, like Manchester Belfast etc., that include some local input but also relay the main patriotic part live to these venues on huge TV's, that's what you are seeing when you see the large crowds outdoors.

The song, ‘Climb Every Mountain’ is originally from the 1965 film musical ‘The Sound of Music’, starring July Andrews.
On screen it is acted out by the New York born actress Peggy Wood, in what was her last films performance. She was nominated in the 1966 Oscars for ‘Best Supporting Actress’. Her performance was actually a very convincing 'mime' to the voice of Margery Mckay, who is the woman actually singing the song ‘Climb Every Mountain’ in the film.
That's not to take away anything from Peggy Wood, who was in her day a very famous singer in stage musicals, in London and New York ,for decades; and later starred in non-singing roles in TV drama series in the USA.
By 1963, Peggy Wood was 72 years old (she was born in 1892) and her great singing voice was failing. So the film producers had her sing to the ‘dubbed’ voice of Margery Mckay. This is the most famous performance of the song, which was written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II.
This is ‘Climb Every Mountain’ from the musical film, ‘The Sound of Music’. Onscreen performance by actress Peggy Wood, voiced by actress and singer Margery Mckay, 1965:

if you had never heard of You'll Never Walk Alone, you should immediately go check out all the other Rogers and Hammerstein scores. I loved the part with the crowd singing along. However, the soloist had just a tich too much vibrato for my taste. Of course, I grew up with the movie version with Peggy Wood singing the solo (although it was probably the incomparable Marni Nixon dubbing the vocal). God I feel old now. LOL

I'm so glad you had that reaction to "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" -- it's a truly wonderful song, and a perfect climax to Act One of "The Sound of Music". Having said that, my all-time favourite rendition of it was by the English singer-actress Patricia Routledge, who had a very long career, and is currently enjoying her retirement (the Queen made her a Dame of the British Empire). Now I happen to think that she was the best singer of this song, even though she doesn't go for the very high note at the end. I don't think the Mother Superior of a convent would go quite so far...
Dame Patricia is best known for her character Hyacinth Bucket ("...the name is BOO-KAY!"). You might like to react to that series, it's called Keeping Up Appearances.
Keep going with your reactions, they are delightful!

Last Night Of The Proms enables us to show the patriotism and pride that still exists in our country. Inevitably you'll get some saddos knocking it but you can see the passion of the people for yourself. If you liked that lady Joel try giving the song Barcelona a listen. It's by Freddie Mercury of Queen duetting with the brilliant Montserrat Caballe. She really did have the voice of an angel and she will blow you away. Happy New Year to you and your family and everyone on here. 🇬🇧🇺🇲

Hi Joel. It gives one goosebumps. You could try Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli singing time to say goodbye, it’s a classical song you may like. Happy New Year from Brighton England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Hi Joel, the Proms are a series of concerts televised by the BBC, they feature Classical and Operatic concerts mainly, but in recent years they also have included Jazz and sometimes TV series music such as Doctor Who, one that I particularly enjoyed! Keep on with the brilliant reactions, and may I wish you, your family and friends a Happy New Year! Much love from here in the UK 🇬🇧

Hi Joel, The term Proms comes from promenade. It was coined in 1875 when the idea was to bring the best music to as many people as possible. Now it is an eight week music festival. The last night of the Proms is a celebration of some of the best Btitish patriotic songs like Land of Hope and glory and Jerusalem. You must save up and come to the U.K. I would love to be your tour guide lol

Did you see that Jps had a whirlwind, 8 day trip to the UK? He's might be returning for another quick visit in 2023. As a general rule though , he didn't meet any followers from youtube or patreon as a general safety measure even though 99.8% of people might be completely fine and wonderful to meet

Love your face when she reached that high note at the end. 🎵🎵She also sang Rule Britannia - Proms 2011. Think you'd like to feature it. Also, the best rendition of God Save The Queen....Charles and Dianas' wedding. And the acoustic version Brian May on top of Buckingham Palace with the sun setting behind..stunning..

Whilst not entirely relevant -as Joel seems blown away by certain singing, may I suggest he listen to Monsterrat Caballe sing Signore Ascolta from Turandot. Her final note will astonish anyone.
