You are correct; there were no vocals in the original. This Pomp and Circumstance March No.1 was composed by Sir Edward Elgar and first performed in October 1901 in Liverpool, UK (along with March No.2) and then 2 days later at a Proms concert in London where a double encore was played due to popular demand. The lyrics 'Land of Hope and Glory' were written later (in 1902) by A.C. Benson at Elgar's request for the Trio section of the March. Elgar then incorporated the revised version into his 'Coronation Ode' which he composed for the coronation of Edward VII.
