Akane has a trigger board on her left hand side plus a Roland "Cow" Bell on her right hand side. I truly have no comprehension how She fits all of this into her playing :)
An instantant classic. During years people went to this video to watch a "battle". In the end, most came to realize that it was not a duel but the construction of a incomparable momentum with three instruments.
Another great reaction! Akane's drumming during the solo duel went unnoticed by me forever until I saw a reactor pointed it out a while back. I felt pretty stupid for not noticing how amazing it was. It wasn't complicated, but it was perfect (like always). Hope to see you take on Blooming or Puzzle live (Maybe Kanami's best performance) if you can get a hold of it. =)
Best apart about this performance for me: after absolutely slaying it for the guitar/bass battle, right at the end, 8:54 here, a wild Miku magically pops into existence through the smoke. This is probably because of the lighting work focusing on Akane, MISA and Kanami throughout and the rest of the lighting just coming back on for the return of Miku and Saiki but, this attention to detail is what really set BAND-MAID apart; nothing is left to chance, a live gig is a carefully crafted experience from start to finish.
Kanami understands music, it's like a simple sentence for her, like 2+2=4. She does at a level I have never seen, you can hear genres like Surf and Ska in their discography, along with the rest of them they blend in more commonly. I said it before and will always say it: Kanami was, is and will be music till the day she dies 🤘🕊️
4:19 All the band members say that Kanami becomes a different person on stage. She can be aggressive, spontaneous and unpredictable. Completely different from normal life. At one concert I went to, she got on Akane's bass drum and banged a cymbal.
Nice reaction Ryan! This guitar battle or as I prefer call and response between Mincho and MISA sends shivers up and down my spine every time, particulary when MISA starts her bass lines… 😍
The musical terms you're looking for, Mr. Mear, are "Vocal Riffs" and "Backing Tracks." And Akane's adding atmospheric "Tribal Fills with Heartbeat" during the solos. It's all pure genius writing, playing and performance - just what you'd expect from the world's best hard rock band, Band-Maid! ;-)
@@paulread4886 Thx, Paul. But I'm thinking a riff is more of a repeating line of notes (or phrase) played to support or enhance the music or a melody... whereas a countermelody (or secondary melody) stands more on its own as a companion musical theme juxtaposed to the main melody to add complexity or emotion, etc.. And riffing is more of an improvised verbal (or played notes) outpouring of expression. But you can use riff and counter melody interchangeably, I suppose.
Most fans seem to agree that most of the time their quality live recordings are even better than the studio versions. This is 1 good example. That said, I just listened to the whole album this tune comes from for 1st time in a while ("Just Bring It"). It is one hell of a great rock album!
Great remarks Ryan! I think Mincho absorbed a lot from the greats and creatively assimilated it to her own style/interpretation/story telling. ❤️ I definitely feel a David Gilmour but stronger attacks vibe and ambience in their lead/bass duet. 😊
This is such a great song live. What really makes this song, in my opinion, are the EPIC crash cymbals from Akane. This provide the PERFECT accent at critical points in the song, especially after that hard stop when the song literally CRASHES back in. Gives me chills no matter how many times I've heard this song. This version, as you have witnessed, is epic in its own right for the obvious reasons you state. The epic call and response between MISA and Kanami with just sublime tom hits from Akane. As to the lower vocals you hear that is actually Saiki singing on a backing track. They have a handful of songs where she recorded a lower octave vocal track to "fill out" the sound of her vocals. Choose Me also has a similar backing track. Miku is still singing her higher pitch parts. The only reason it is there is to round out the vocals and give them a fuller feel. Also on the backing track is some synth/piano playing as well as some additional rhythmic sounds. You don't really notice them at all live just that the mix for this concert DVD was SOOOOOO good you literally hear everything.
Going through these reactions, stumbled upon "Don't You Tell Me" and happy to see you made this one on my birthday. Cool!! 👍 About this performance, this is forever one of my fav tracks from Band-Maid... when the song opens to the chorus I always think of me flying from the stage and landing on hands and heads of the crowd... and the MISA/Kanami duel is one of those magic moments that I'll always come back to, watch it, re-watch it over and over, show it to friends, show it to my wife for the gazillionesimal time, loving it every single time. This whole concert should come out as a Band-Maid Live album (not just as a "extra" in a special edition box) a full intentional LIVE album. This would be right beside my fav live album (Deep Purple's "Made In Japan" (curiously enough)). Fav band with one of my fav tracks.
Kanami in the zone... and love the guitar-bass call and response between her and Misa. This is one of those very occasional performances where Misa's work - during the thing with Kanami - reminds me of the late great Chris Squire.
The low voice is a backing track of Saiki, they use that in many songs. Some people will tell you that it's "Miku's frog voice" which is nonsense. We know that it's an extra Saiki track because during one of their livestreams they had issues with the backing track for Choose me, and not only could you hear clearly that it was Saiki, the band explicitly talked about how it was her. Among the songs they've written themselves, this has one of the simplest bass lines. A bit of trivia: when the pandemic started, Misa did a few livestreams and in one of them she taught Akane to play this songs on bass. It was an 1 hour stream, Akane didn't know basic things about the bass and they've spent the first 15 minutes tuning, yet even before the hour was over Akane could play through the whole thing. And I don't get why people have issues with pausing during solos...
I believe that after 40 mins or so Akane started to mention that her fingers were hurting....and there was an exchange on different types of pain they both suffered on their. Instruments....(I don't speak Japanese...but their body language was plain to see...well in my mind it was!)
Sergof yeah that was my general interpretation of their body language.....they seemed to discuss how their instruments can be painful to play at times....Misa was pointing at her fingers while Akane was rubbing her arms.....I know that Akane stopped the "lesson" because her fingers were sore ....it was plain to see but thanks for the comment....any little bit helps to understand these amazing musicians...Peace and Respect from 🇨🇦
I have never seen another band where every member's playing is playing is so is so interesting that each one is constantly taking attention away from the other member. Not in an annoying way. The song itself is nowhere near the top of my favorite Band Maid songs, BUT the middle bass/guitar 'battle' is EPIC! MISA & Kanami are just SO talented! ♥
Yes, Mr. Mear, Miku does do low harmonies on songs! Which is quite cool. This is why I said in discord that I think "Don't you tell me" has the best call and response. Akane's drums is the canvas for the solos to "paint" their musical art.
First track off the incredible, Just Bring It, the best progressive hard rock album since Appetite for Destruction, and maybe the best of all time. Every song is a banger. I was already a Maidiac when I bought it and I can tell you, because it is no secret, that I played it every day for months in my car. "Don't You Tell Me" is like a call to arms - time to rock, and rock hard!! 🤘🤘
3:20 the low harmony has been brought up before. Concensus is it's a layering affect on Saiki's mic but very very possible it's a backing track. Edit - I tend to think the low harmony is coming off Miku's mic. It stays even volume and pitch too much to be Saiki (I think) who's moving through volume, pitch, and tone.
The only guitarist that Kanami has ever reminded me of is her idol, Carlos Santana. It's because of the feels and soul she puts into some of her riffs. Other than Santana, she doesn't ever make me think of anyone but herself. See if you can find a video of the live version their song "Moratorium." It might be on the same site that you found this. It is one of their most rocking songs. It was taken off of UA-cam about the same time as this song. Thanks for another reaction to the Maids.
Hey, what the hell?! Not only did I watch (most of) this concert yesterday, I also watched Predator the day before that. GeT OuTTa My hEaD! And to da choppaaa!
That's not Kanami..its Mincho on stage and every members have to keep eye on her whenever Kanami turned to "evil" Mincho 🤣 especially Akane🤣"hope she won't kick my kits while on Mincho's mode" Apart from the voice..its Miku's "frog" voice or "old man" voice according to Saiki 🤣
Have you considered playing the other tracks from all of the albums - available on Spotify - and reviewing them? If you did you would be doing BAND MAID for another year. Examples are FREEZER - ARCADIA GIRL - MATCHLESS GUM and many more! If you can't then at least listen to all of the albums! These videos are really just a taste. Listening to the other songs and knowing what they can do to songs live makes me want to fly to Japan and watch them.
Ryan! -First, good news in Japan! We broke this year's record again with only 79 contaminated people for the whole country! Live concerts (with masks) have resumed in my Prefecture, Shizuoka, and I am actually going to one on the 23rd! Expect live concerts for Band Maid soon! -Second, I do not understand people mongering rumors that Saiki and Miku do not like each other... Utter bullshit, as proved wby their new weekly radio chat which started last week ! -Third, about Akane: this lady might be sometimes called "gorilla", but I would call her the "Japanese Octopus" as she seemed to have 4 legs and 4 arms (LOL) and the smile often associated with octopuses in Japanese manga! More seriously, her lower body part and upper body part seem to work completely independently. Her legs (have you noticed how hard and muscled they actually are?) work allows her arm work more flexibility and freedom. Her straight upper body, bar her arms, does not move as much as expected, and that is where her secret lies, if I might humbly suggest. Still discovering more thanks to your reactions! Now where is that Japanese sake bottle gone! Matane/又ね/ bye bye for now! Robert-Gilles
Ryan! Mount Fuji is getting whiter and whiter! Remember the link I just gave you (Tokyo Live 2018)? If you could make reactions about it (all, impossible and tiring) I may suggest (because they definitely sound different): Turn me on, Daydreaming (with violins and piano by Kanami), One and Only (nobody reacts to that one!), Fate, Carry on Living, I Can't Live Without You, for a start! Best regards, Robert-Gilles

Another super cool react ryan!👍❤ Can't wait till you get to the rest of bandmaids great songs like Turn me on live or Clang live in zepp Tokyo is the best quality version! 😋😋😀😉❤❤
The song itself is nowhere near the top of my favorite Band Maid songs, BUT the middle bass/guitar 'battle' is EPIC! MISA & Kanami are just SO talented! ♥
hahaha the addiction is bad isnt it...but oh so good at the same time
This song is 51% Saiki. Of course I say that realize the entire song is amazing. But Saiki's voice is the driving force here.
Poor Saiki you can hear the strain on her voice before the surgery
Santana soul in Kanamincho soulful riff and licks solo😮
Yes, Mr. Mear, Miku does do low harmonies on songs! Which is quite cool. This is why I said in discord that I think "Don't you tell me" has the best call and response. Akane's drums is the canvas for the solos to "paint" their musical art.
Kanami sounds like Kanami, she plays in a way like no other, I stick with that.
Dig your reactions....HUGE BAND-MAID FAN...
The look on Kanami's face during duel from behind drums is absolutely precious
4:39 this is Kanami as I love her!
Every time I listen to this song, I'm like, "when the hell does Saiki breathe?" Putting the bass/guitar intense flirting aside.
Best Ever Mincho - MISA call-n-response! \m/
Glad you finally got to see this.
3:40 as for backing tracks and click tracks, for the most part it's Akane who works those.
they'll need an arena when/if they tour the US.
Hey Ryan ! IAM going to lose my freaking mind when I see the tsunami live in Dallas House of Blues!!!
GREAT!!
Kanami is a musical chameleon
The MV for this song is amazing also.
TRIVIA: When Kanami bends like that, she is looking at Saiki.
You might have already known but one of her favorite guitarist is Carlos Santana!
The barefoot assassin and the Riff Goddess tearing it up!!
We still like it!! Especially this one.
Akane was the moderator in that debate. Beautifully done
Great reaction! Loved it. Sometimes when Kanami is looking back she is looking at Saiki, that is fun. Fantastic song live!
For the distorted vocal they could be using ADT automatic doubling tracking (the Beatles were the first to use it)
But that’s just a guess on my part.
Akane slowing builds that flow behind the solos. Wonderful and masterful.
That's not Kanami..its Mincho on stage and every members have to keep eye on her whenever Kanami turned to "evil" Mincho 🤣 especially Akane🤣"hope she won't kick my kits while on Mincho's mode"
Apart from the voice..its Miku's "frog" voice or "old man" voice according to Saiki 🤣
この曲も完成度が高い
translation
the quality of how complete this song is, is so high
Nice mic, I think, except for Saiki, their vocal mics are Shures.
You already know Ryan that Siki is my favorite vocalist , in the world.
Band Maid binge watch time?... I like😀
If you can find it , from the same concert the song Turn me on , is great lots of MISA , n nice vocals from Miku .
Miku has a 3-octave range...amazingly versatile.
The best part is when you don't stop in the middle of solo's
See if you can get the video of "Turn Me On" from this concert on Discord. Has great intro with just MISA and Akane.
Maybe give Start Over a try?
You would like the last line of the lyrics.
That's great news! I wish I could say the same about her....i agree with your other points👍
Best regards,
Robert-Gilles
Thank you...I have some time off coming up for the holidays....
Miku has a voice effect on her microphone!
The fact that MISA is 7" taller than Kanami makes the musicianship even more epic.
😲
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Miku does a low vocal, it's been called her "frog" voice. There are times she is doing it and Saiki isn't singing it's more obvious.
i wonder if its somehting she got used to from the early days matching Saiki's vocals pre Saiki's op when her voice was more husky
I hope the Maids rock Puzzle in the House of Blues
Kanami is in Mincho mode 🤟🏻
So Ryan, you seem to have fallen down the pigeon hole far enough now for a Miku song. 😊 "Sayonakidori" is the best, but "Time" & "Rock in Me" aren't too far behind! ...Live, of course.
