Miku, the rhythm guitarist, is the band's founder and was originally the lead vocalist. They realized early on that her voice didn't really have the intensity they needed for the music they wanted to make, so they recruited Saiki. They also realized they wanted a second guitar, and Miku learned to play on the job.
They used to do more trade offs on who was singing lead, but as the music has gotten more complex and demanding for Miku's guitar work, they seem to have kind of settled on Miku primarily doing supporting vocals. They do generally give her a solo vocal song per album, though. But she's a strong singer, and has a larger range than Saiki. She can harmonize with her high or low, and sometimes she does both in like the same phrase.
Her parts aren't as flashy as the lead guitarist, or the bassist, or the drummer, but she's the secret sauce for the band. Whenever the song needs something a little extra, she'll add some vocal ad libs or something, and she'll keep the rhythm anchored, so that everyone else can go wild without the song becoming unhinged. They can all shine brighter because of her willingness and ability to step into any role they need her to.

Band-Maid was scheduled to play at Inkcarcenation in 2020 but COVID cancelled it. Band-Maid did make it to Sonic Temple in 2023. Band-Maid met the Warning at Aftershock in 2022 and Mikey-chan/Incubus at Pointfest in 2023 and that is how we got Show Them and Bestie on the new album in 2024.

On rare occasions the lead guitarist, Kanami, will go to her mic and add some vocals but her voice is soft and is down in the mix so you can't really hear her. When she plays an acoustic song with just Saiki ("Anemone", "Puzzle") she sings the harmony. Akane (drums) sings backup on the acoustic trio version of "Sayonakidori".

Yes, the rhythm guitarist is the 2nd vocalist. :) Actually, she didn't know how to play guitar when the band started. So, she's only been playing for 10 years. She's also the main lyricist although, now, the lead vocalist writes lyrics also. Oh, she's also the band founder and the person who worked at a Maid Cafe.

Miku is a do it all. Why, cause she can. She has the drive to do anything she sets her mind to. From working 3 jobs, with very little sleep, to earn money to move to Tokyo. To beating out 2597 others to win a underground idol contest, to form a 3 piece underground idol band. To quitting the idol group and getting Management to agree to support her idea of creating a band of maids playing hard rock music...creating "the Gap", the juxtaposition between what you see and what you hear. And finding the first member, Kanami (lead guitar and main composer), on-line. To stepping back when the original 4 piece started, as she didn't feel her pop idol voice was quite right for the direction she wanted for the band. To learning the guitar, to play the rhythm guitar parts. At the end of the day, Band-Maid essentially has two lead vocals quality singers. Just different styles of singers, which really works for the Maids. She does get a lead song in most albums. And she has a side project, which others have mentioned already.
BTW...PRS has just release a Kanami a limited edition signature guitar. The first person from Japan, male or female, to have a LE Signature Guitar. Handed to her at a PRS event in Japan, by Mr. PRS himself. Well deserved and a true honor for Kanami. There's a video out on YT of her talking about the guitar. It's purtty...and limited to 200, hand signed by Kanami. PO!🕊🤘😆🤘

Miku, the rhythm guitarist, does do most of the backing vocals on the tracks where Saiki sings leads. Miku does have some songs where she is the lead vocalist including "Sayonakidori" "The Rock In Me", "Time", and most recently "Brightest Star". The acoustic version of "Sayonakidori" is a song you really need to listen to so you can hear how beautiful her voice really is.

Band-Maid is awesome live and I was fortunate to see them last year in Austin Texas in May, definitely lived up to their reputation for sounding awesome. They traveled to Rockville festival in Daytona Florida and got to play right before Suicidal Tendencies with Slipknot headlining the main stage. That full set is available to watch on UA-cam where Band-Maid won over the crowd and made some new fans. They also did the same at the Lollipooluza concert in Chicago a few months later, and that whole set by Band-Maid is available on UA-cam. They have earned my admiration as my favorite band after many years being a huge Metallica fan these ladies have won me over. They are phenomenal with ever song being great with so many cool things in each song and I play guitar so the guitar work by Kanami is just terrific, so many great riffs and leads with cool melodies mixed in it’s just so catchy and interesting. Check out their songs Shambles and Rinne for their heavy side. It’s impossible to pick a favorite Band-Maid song, just so many!!

Mike! Mike! Mike! Another Madiac Mike! Great reaction, subbed! Hopefully you can dive in DEEP on Band-Maid. 😄
While you did miss on the subject of vocal backing tracks (some of what was fooling you were Miku's backup vocals, I think, which gives you that layered feeling), Band-Maid DOES use backing tracks for instrumentation here and there. But it's not as a replacement for any parts, it's as subtle supplementation to the musical lines being played. Often piano or keys, so there's no chance anybody is being fooled that somebody is playing the part. There are even occasional electronic drum parts (that no human could play) and when they go off, the drummer Akane holds her sticks in the air so as to say, "not me... but here I come!"
Know what Band used occasional cool backing track parts like this? Rush.
There IS a backing track in the live Don't You Tell ME track, but it's really subtle. See if you can pick it out. This is the sort of amazing attention to detail that this band has.
Yes, you need to see this band live... I saw them at the House of Blues in Chicago at the end of their 2022 US tour, and they blew the roof off the place. Missed their set at Lalapalooza last year, but we're hoping after their recent recording stint (putting out an EP right after having finished putting out an album), that we might see them later in 2025. And who knows which festivals they'll get invited to next time around.

Welcome back to the world of the Maid 🌍
Festivals are fun, but the girls only get a handful of songs. If they come to any smaller venue within a thousand miles of you? Make the trip.
That’s what I did. They played RockFest only a short drive from me, but I chose to drive a 19 hour round trip to see them in a small club in NC.
I think you did a cool thing here by doing a double feature. The studio cuts are always great, but the Maids and the audience combine for something special.
From one Musical Mike to another: “Domination,” OMV followed by the legendary live from Line Cube Shibuya.

Ah...well, you'll find out...they have fast...super fast...and kind slow...My favorite two songs are two of their "rock ballads", "Daydreaming" and "The One". The latter just came out on their last album. You already did my 3rd and 4th, "Blooming" and "Forbidden Tale", again the later from their last album. I just saw them back to back at ZEPP Haneda. AMAZING as usual. There only a handful of bands who can play their enter new album set list and not have their fans complain about how that was not a good show. The Maids just reload and kick 🍑!!! They also just announce a EP will be coming out next year. Can't wait.

"Definitely not a backing track, and she sounds great." About that..... Band_Maid do use backing tracks, but in the "good way". All 5 ladies ARE performing live. They do use backing tracks for the additional soundscape. Eg: whenever there is a song with piano/keyboards, orchestral arrangement, sound effects etc.... it's a backing track...... "a sign of the times". Kanami , the lead guitarist and head songwriter, writes/performs those parts. She can't replicate what she performs on the album (multiple instruments at once) and I'm fine with that. It enhances the show. What I am against with backing tracks are bands using them and just miming over the backing track.
We know that if Band-Maid "lost their laptop containing their backing tracks", they would still perform and it would still sound great. Band-Maid are a real band and without needing all the modern tricks, they still sound great....... just look at their acoustic Xmas album from a few years ago. Next song..... Sayonakidori, both original and acoustic live.

Yokohama Arena was the final performance of their 10th Anniversary tour. Biggest venue ever, 3.5 hours 33 songs. Absolutely epic. At least 3 members of Lovebites attended the concert. You need to react to Lovebites, all-women, power/thrash/speed metal band of a very high skill level. They have toured the UK with Dragonforce and done many of the big European metal fests like Wacken. Here is one of their thrashier songs, "Set the World on Fire" ua-cam.com/video/99zsH6iG_6c/v-deo.html
As for Babymetal, Matt of Trivium is a Babymetal fan as is Corey Taylor of Slipknot. You should check out their epic collab, "Kingslayer", with Bring Me the Horizon: ua-cam.com/video/hb2mMVdx1KU/v-deo.html
Ignore both the Babymetal haters and Babymetal's crazier fans. Babymetal have opened for Metallica, toured with Korn and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc. They are the juggernaut act of Japanese rock/metal, their overseas popularity has opened doors for other Japanese bands and those acts recognize that.

Unfortunately all of BM's studio recordings have had the de-facto "compress it 'til it squeaks", loud-as-possible treatment that most pop and rock has been to subjected to for several decades to pander to 'casual' listeners (cars, personal devices) - trying to enjoy them as an 'experience' on good gear, whether in-room or headphones, is pointless. The live recordings are better, but that's mainly because you just can't process tracks that haven't been laid down in a studio as heavily.

Well, "Don't You Tell Me" is not a bad song, I don't like the official MV, probably it's one of their worst.
This live version is better, but I prefer the one at Zepp Tokyo 2018... also on the UA-cam official Band-Maid channel you can find iconic and much better live versions, like those of "Real Existence", "One Set", "Domination" or "Freedom"... and if you want to risk going outside of their official UA-cam channel you can find great performances like those of "Take Me Hlgher", "Awkward" or "Moratorium"😲

A typical BAND-MAID song has enough hooks to power three or four songs by lesser bands.

I think their songs are only good when they play them. Because they're such great musicians.
I listen to a lot of Vocaloid. I think those are great songs because Senbonzakura gets 170 million views when it gets covered by Waggaki Band. Or Phony gets 60 million views when covered by Suisei.
