  • Hi garden friends! I'm Laura. My garden is my home "office" I've worked hard to create a productive space in small area for my family, wildlife, and pollinators to enjoy. I garden in Southern New Jersey zone 7b - 8, just about 10 minute drive from Philadelphia. I hope this video inspires you!

    So glad you’re posting more content, you’re an inspiration. As I am advancing in years and am pulling back on garden expansions, editing and taking out my high maintenance plants, even though I love everyone of them, you think nothing of major changes in you garden and so I get to live vicariously through your exuberance. Thanks for taking the extra time and effort to commit to a UA-cam channel, I enjoy everyone you post.

    Hi Laura, I love watching your videos! Your front and back gardens are a really good inspiration for us that live on city lots. It is truly charming and cottage-y, nicely curated, neat but not perfect. Relatable or at least potentially relatable if I get to work. . . I also like how things change and evolve, creative minds are always on the move! Looks so pretty right now, even with all the heat.

    Those Floret seeds are expensive because you just buy them once then save your own seeds. Saving seeds is a very fun thing to do. I’m obsessed with seed saving now.

    • @HowsItGrowing
      @HowsItGrowing  15 днів тому

      Oh absolutely! It’s the only reason I got them. And they will be true to the mother plant. I’ll be collecting them for life, I hope. 🤣💜

    • @lilacmile
      @lilacmile 13 днів тому

      But you can save pretty much any seeds, not just Floret’s, so that’s not why they’re so expensive. They’re expensive because they can charge that much, and good for them. They’ve put work into developing those varieties and have grown a reputation along with their business and realize the “exclusivity” will only last so long as they make seeds available to the public and “similar” varieties come out, so they’re making as much as they can upfront. Same happens to most breeders, so yes, “seed saving” is part of it but not in the way they’re telling it. The difference is Floret’s advantages are in direct sales to the public, so instead of a seed company paying higher prices for carrying a particular seed and transferring that cost to consumers in a more manageable way, their cost is directly higher to customers. I’ll say they’ve done a really good job selling the idea that it’s the magic of seed saving, though.

    Years ago I did some research on Lantana camara 'Rolled Gold', at least I think that was the cultivar. The tag at the big box store said it eas sterile. Since Lantana camara is hugely invasive in my area, I wanted to make sure it was safe. I found an article from Uni of Florida that said that while 'Rolled Gold' was considered sterile, there was a 1 in 1000 chance that a berry would contain a viable seed and that the seed would sprout a true-to-type plant. In other words, it would be fully functioning and fertile. So apparently some "sterile" cultivars can still produce seed, just very rarely.

    I don't get as anxious and worked up over the heat since I stopped watching the news and listening to the weather guys/gals, who always try to whip us up into a lather about the weather. It's been beastly here in CT also, lots of 90 plus temps and very humid. My "I am just waiting for Fall at this point" attitude kicked in early this year! Wow, that "shrinkflation" with the fence trellis is such a bummer! It ticks me off when companies try to pull a fast one like that. But at least you don't notice it with the newer smaller panels on the other side of the yard.

      I just returned a hibiscus that was not supposed to be sterile because I wanted the pollinators and it was - not one bee!
      I had the old fashioned hibiscus at my first home, yes, there were seedlings but I have photos of them literally covered with all kinds of pollinators unlike the hybrids of today. The older varieties live much longer too. Seedlings only popped up where there was mulch which I soon got rid of and planted ground cover instead (no offense, I hate mulch!) which attracted pollinators in the spring!

Whey makes them worth the price tag is that you can collect the seeds and plant year after year. Many zinnia seeds purchased are sterile these days and require you to buy yearly. And they will apparently bloom true to the parent plant and not create a crazy looking hybrid.

    Everything looks so beautiful, I have followed you from the beginning, I fell in love with your wisteria when it was on your shed, searched on line and bought one this year. It is beautiful, has bloomed twice for me, but now it's leaves are starting to yellow. I have treated it with fungal treatment and fertilized it. Here in central Ky we are having such a heat wave so have been watering daily, maybe I have over watered? Its in a deep pot by my potting shed, I want to train it like you have in this video, more slim and columnar. It's kind of bushy at the moment. Any tips or advise would be so appreciated.

      Hi!! This is just the nicest message. It made me happy to read it. I think the water might be causing the yellowing. I let my pot dry out a little before watering. It’s so brutal hot it’s just hard to know what to do these days. This one was really bushy too. I just cut all of the longer tendrils and new foliage off all along the main thick stems last year. This year, I did the same. Anything growing where I didn’t like, just snipped it off. I follow a lady on Instagram who made a wisteria into a topiary tree, I thought that was very cool and it gave me the confidence to just start clipping away. 😃💜
