Inspector Wexford - Some Lie and Some Die

- The beginning of this video jumps a little, I hope it doesn't spoil your enjoyment, unfortunately that VHS for you.
Quote taken from the VHS cover:
A massive rock concert is the scene of a murder mystery when the body of a young woman is found viciously battered in the eerie darkness of a quarry as thousands of fans watch the glittering performance of top rock star, Zeno. Which means there are thousands of possible suspects in this brutal killing - a depressing thought for even the most diligent detective. - Розваги
The nice thing about loosing my memory to age is all these I have seen before seem all new!
At 83, I understand your point all too well. LOL
Isn't it amusing to hear a line and realize one has seen it but it's still all new?
😂 I can relate
Ditto.
LOL so true❤
Thank you, Paul. I love the Inspector Wexford series and you have done tremendous work in uploading these videos. All of us watchers and fans of the series owe you a debt of gratitude. Stay safe in this time of covid and keep well. Cheers from British Columbia!
Many thanks also from Austria forr the inspector Wexford series. We love them too. And Paul... be carefully and stay safe 😷
Many Thanks for the Inspector Wexford series, all the best from Estonia

Thanks for uploading this series. I am absolutely loving rewatching these!😊
The theme music reminds me of childhood, I love George Baker'd accent. Thanks for uploading this. My therapist suggested I pick a TV programme to help with understanding social interaction and body language and what my interpretation of it is and I was thinking of using am episode of Inspector Wexford for that. I have Aspergers and I don't always understand people and their behaviour and intentions. So I'm trying to get some progress with understanding people.
TomG SoftTalkASMR 👍 Good choice... Try Vera...
@@cloudy1164 thanks, yes Vera was a choice but can't find full episodes on UA-cam, maybe one day it will appear.
TomG SoftTalkASMR
I wish you all the best.
I understand your difficulties. I’m a great grandmother and I have both a grandson and, from another grandchild, a great grandson with Aspergers. I would think that the British shows are best suited to study the body language.
@@aliciarobertson4979 thanks very much for your kindness it is appreciated. If ever you would like to message from time to time I'd be happy to share my understanding and experiences. It is sometimes a very challenging condition to live with. The only way I've been able to describe it is that "our energy is different and can be easily misunderstood, but we mean well". Thanks once again getting in touch. Wishing you and your family well.
TomG SoftTalkASMR
You’re welcome. Your explanation of your energy is “spot on”. A very good way to say it.
Some folk just don’t take the little extra time to try to accommodate some others of the human race.
I would be happy to hear from you whenever YOU feel you’d like to message. I’ll reply as soon as possible. I am currently hospitalised for multiple Maxillofacial surgeries to upper and lower jaw as a consequence of previous cancer surgery and treatments so I’m slower right now.
Have a lovely day.
Hello,
I was intrigued by the concert venue, I recognised Knebworth,
I went in '86 and '90. So the book was written in '73 and the TV
production was '90. So from which year was the concert used??
The act we saw at the beginning were Atom Seed..the track 'What'
released in '89.
According to Wiki:
On 30 June 1990, the park was the location for The Silver Clef Award Winners Concert which was recorded and released on DVD. It included the performance of artists including Pink Floyd, Cliff Richard & The Shadows, Tears for Fears, Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Ray Cooper, Robert Plant (w/ Jimmy Page), Status Quo and Phil Collins (w/ Genesis).
Peter Capaldi as Zeno was a pretty fair singer, having been lead singer of a band called 'The Dreamboys'
However the key music was performed by Brian(OBE) and Warren Bennett, father and son..from the Shadows.
Very well 'spliced' and convincing background for one (IMHO)
of the Best Wexfords....
Also the only one with Doctor Who as the bad guy...😏
Cordialement,
I officially fallen in love with this wonderful series , thank you so much for uploading this treasure -keep me sane during auto isolation ! Thanks again, cheers from San Francisco!🙏🌁😷
Me too
Thank you, Paul!!!😃💕
A five-days dead body, exposed to the summer weather, and insects ... mmm, that must have created an inviting scent to drop beside, and in which to roll around.
Thanks alot. A great Story.
Thank you, Paul, for all your work on this series. So love it.
Thank you so much for uploading this Paul. It’s my all time favourite Wexford and impossible to find anywhere.
The Wexfords are really interesting. I watched all of the Sherlock Holmes with Brett, all of the Poirots with Suchet, and all of the Inspector Alleyns, all of which were well done. However, the Wexfords seem to give a broader view of life - not so focused on the upper and upper middle classes in Britain. These are much grittier than the others, and perhaps more interesting because of it.
For a more working class angle on Britcrime, try “The Sweeny” or “Taggart”.
@@rexharrison6827 Thanks for the tip.
@@rexharrison6827
Or Daziel (sp?) and Pascoe and A Touch of Frost, for the everyman of BritCrime as well.
@@richardcleveland8549 You're right, Richard, RR did try and reproduce a cross-section of life in a small British market town with the Wexford series. Unfortunately now and again she (RR) does display some appalling snobbery in her books, despite her attempts at equality and democracy. For example in 'Harm Done' she makes some dreadful comments about those who own their own homes versus those who rent what used to be known as council houses: I mean social rented housing. I have lived all my life in social rented housing and I can definitely say that many if not most tenants are perfectly normal, sociable, pleasant people.
@@richardcleveland8549 And Reg, of course, is able to relate to people from all walks of life, which makes him very human and appealing and gives him an extra insight into (and even sympathy with) the criminals he has to deal with. I would say that is absolutely essential in his job.
George Baker....ahhhh💞
Chief Inspector Wexford comes across as a fatherly or elder brotherly person he is firm and generous too very well balanced character. Sad George Baker is in another world that we will not be able to meet him.
Peter Capaldi is always great. Love him.
Thank you so much for hanging on to those VHSs and uploading them.
Second that, from the bottom of my heart!!
Love this series!
I thought the various relationships in this one were interesting and quite sad. Mike's son reminded me of me listening to music for hours as a teenager and knowing every line and every reference.
Thanks for the load, Paul, great episode. 👍
Agreed! The saddest bit is when Mike's daughter Pat is trying on her bridesmaid's dress and Mike sees Jean in her and starts crying ... And as you say, the bits with his son John, listening to Zeno. That's what I really like about this series, the insight we get into Mike and Reg's family life, their wives, their kids, their everyday ups and downs. Normally I don't like all this human interest stuff in crime mystery series, but here it's so very well done.
I still know all the words to those old songs💝
Thank you Paul. I love watching these oldies. Something so cosy about them.
Thanks Paul,
Glad to hear of your success both professionally and in uploading!
Love this series. Thank you! Capaldi is always great to watch. Remembering the first time I saw him--as Vera in Prime Suspect.
Great movie but terrifying Very well acted. . 10/10 ❤️🇦🇺
thank you from Micanopy, Florida. I watched these years ago and love them even more now.
Great artistic touch, having Dawn walk through Kingsmarkham and through the fields in that amazing mauve suit while being pestered by journalists, to the accompaniment of brilliant guitar music (presumably by Zeno).
Peter Capaldi, Lewis Capaldi's Uncle....Very cool beans. Thank you for uploading this episode.
I am surprised with the reference to Lewis Capaldi's uncle that you did not just say, "oooh look, it's Dr. Who!"
Glad he can act, because he sure cannot sing!
@@PetroicaRodinogaster264 I thought it was more remarkable that Capaldi Snr played a singer-song writer!
I could not hear it very well but was impressed by Peter Capaldi as the singer. Remember him in Doctor Who when he was a little older ? One of the best Doctors. IMHO
I had a terrible time trying to make out what was being said and this was my second try even with volume at max. Just one frustrating mess! 😕😬😠
Thank you so much for uploading this video. It helps me to
cope with the pandemic!
Been racking my brain trying to remember where i saw the guy playing Det. Mike, he was the French herold in Henry V with Robbie Coltrane Dame Judy Dench et al.
I`M NEW TO INSPECTOR WEXFORD,I THINK IT IS GREAT ENTERMENT.
brings back old memories
Did I see Gemma Jones as a witness in this? LOVED "The Duchess of Duke Street".
Yes, Gemma plays the neurotic Mrs. Peveril and is brilliant in the role.
Thank you.
I usually hate it when they change the period that a novel is set for a TV program but this is so well-acted that I do not mind.
Thanks for sharing, fantastic quality!!!
Thank you for uploading. Great video, great series!
Well that was really something ...a real plot Twister, I am getting into this series , thanks for the video. 😎
I'm always startled by how many birds are caring and twittering. Are there really so many everywhere?
Birds were still numerous at the time of the film. Around 65% of birds have disappeard in 25 ans in Europe (about 60 million birds).
Really beautiful
@@francoisebeylie2923 That is truly appalling. I grew up in the countryside and as a child woke up early every spring morning to the cheeping of many little sparrows in the wistaria growing underneath my window. Now after many years in the city, with only a plethora of vile seagulls and manky-looking pigeons as bird life, I have finally moved back to the countryside at long last. Fortunately there still seem to be many species of birds around, and lots of sparrows, bless them!
I do like these, but it drives me crazy that Wexford goes into a probably crime scene, makes himself at home and then touches everything without gloves!
Did fingerprinting and DNA testing exist back then? 😂
@@kylieharrison3782 Fingerprinting certainly did, but not sure about DNA. I don't think so.
Very nice video. Thank you.
Binge watching on this series. Thank you so much!!! But been meaning to mention, the volume need to be increased. 🤔🙄
Yes it does indeed, thanks for mentioning it!
The good Old days of tv that was actually entertaining ☺️
Thank you for this
Love the series, and characters. The dreadful racket of what was supposed I guess to be "rock" at the concert was truly terrible what a racket. But the post is brilliant keep it up.
80s stuff, I used to love it back then!!
I thank you so much
Must have come from a good quality VHS recording. Nice uploads, Paul. Shame about the dodgy start of the video, though.
Unfortunately though, despite the fact that the tapes or other storage media holding these episodes are intact, important documents surrounding the rights to an archive of programming from Television South ((TVS), the company who originally made these) have been going missing since TVS lost it's franchise at the end of 1992 and subsequently undergoing a number of takeovers and relocations, resulting in an ongoing dispute over the rights, hence the reason these older episodes of The Ruth Rendell Mysteries ranging from the 1987-1992 seasons have yet to be released on DVD, let alone most other TVS produced/commissioned shows.
The only episodes of The Ruth Rendell Mysteries that are available on DVD are the ones from 1993-2000, from after Meridian replaced TVS as the ITV contractor in the South and South-Eastern side of England. Guess we're still hoping for every episode that was made to be released as one whole boxset someday in the future, eh?
Guy Palmer Thank you for this information; I really enjoy these older episodes. I hope all the old episodes become available.
Excellent! Thank you.
Thanks for the upload. I think I've watched them all by now. Sad.
Go back to the beginning and watch them all again in chronological order! The more frequently you watch them the better they get :-)
Obrigada🙏🙋♀️💖🇵🇹🍀🍒☂️
I thought that the headliner's sign said NO..... ZE. And laughed out loud. Nosy! Right around 10 minutes in, when he begins singing.
second time I watched this. just as great as the first time. thank you
Thank you 😺
Excellent, Excellent, Excellent 🇬🇧
I like it when I see actors and actresses in this series who have gone on to other shows. In one episode the assistant of Inspector Allyn was a police office. There is woman in this episode who looks just like the room mom Mrs. Garrett, in the American show The Facts of Life, but I know it's not here.
The actor playing Edward Peveril (Donald Sumpter if I have the name right) also played Alexander Bonaparte Cust in Agatha Christie's Poirot: The ABC Murders. A totally different role, and he is convincing in both roles. He's an excellent actor. And so is the actress who plays Joan, Dawn's flat-mate. Real tears, which is very difficult to do. Kudos for both!
Thanks for posting. The sound is very low in some parts, so I couldn't really hear it properly.
You can adjust sound and speed captions etc on screen
Thank you!
I love Reg and Dora's home! A, Ireland
Yes so do I, it's gorgeous.
Great story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🥰🤗
Peter Capaldi's singing is really quite good.
It is his voice isn't it? His son is now a singer.
@@nzsooz3884 Lewis capaldi is not his son
@@nzsooz3884 Apparently Peter does indeed do the singing in this episode.
Surely you're joking.
It’s really quite awful.
Great!.. thanks!
Burden, as always, is a great monument to positivity.
Sound was pretty bad in parts. I could not get it loud enough to hear it.
I really love the song Let me believe
The principle behind the gold standard was that it prevented the runaway printing of money. It was not the only option however. Germany in the inter-war years had almost no gold reserves, and adopted a policy of printing money according to the amount of wealth produced by its workforce. It has been suggested that the resurgence of Germany’s economy was the real provocation for the Second World War. Germany had bucked the stranglehold of debt to international financiers and thrived. The country simply could not be allowed to set an example to other nations.
Not possible , corpse after 5 days is just lying 30 cm from their love-bed, flies having the time of their life, and they both feel nothing?
That band reminds me of Faith NoMore or Red Hot chili Peppers - 90s Cali rock, as someone who was in my 20s at that time!
DI burden tormented by memory of dead wife. He marries Jenny later.
Story has complex relationships
Feeling sorry for Dora
The video segments of the crowd were probably archive movie film of a genuine large rock festival like Glastonbury . but the segments of the 2 bands and the black female singer are actors & inspector Wexford speaking from the front of stage were pre , some festival . even the 2 shots from behind of the black singer you could see only dark night AND no audience . this zeno bloke is such a caricature of a rock star its laughable . i'll come back later to watch the rest, maybe
Dr.Who freaks me out!!!🙄
The charact6er of Inspector Burden seems always to be in some kind of emotional or mental upset. I think he may need some counseling. Too much of this and I'm finished watching this series.
Interesting… I find him interesting to study.. he seems controlled yet he is conflicted because he would like to lose control at times… he is emotional and feels deeply yet he can be self absorbed .. but he is passionate… I like the portrayal by Christopher..
If I were Wexford I would have fired Mike long ago...way too emotional. But that's why people watch this series...something for the whole entire family.
Poor old Dora, they also serve who also stand and wait …
Oops, only stand and wait …
Thanks, I stand corrected!
audio volume too low
Zeno acted like a spoiled boy 👦. 😊😊😊
😬 Closed Captioning (CC) is a nightmare. The text is 90% different from the audio. If a viewer relied on CC 100% they would have NO idea what was being said. Too bad. It is true for all the Inspector Wexford videos. Sorry to say.
The singer has a bit of a Donovan vibe.
Wow
This is the first episode of Wexford where I have seen people of colour with speaking parts. And just when I had almost given Burden some benefit of doubt, he goes on to behave like a right plodder with his prejudices. Hurray for granny when the Zeno showed up and gave her a great big hug. I enjoyed that part.
Wondering what area that was where the black hostess takes Wexford to her apt. for further discussions about the case....
Wexford is so lucky to have Dora. If it was me i would tell him to hit the road and take Burton with him. What jerks.
First time I have heard any cursing in these movies.
1:26 take that back! Careful what what you ask for! 2020 is not brilliant! 😳
The decision to announce that to the crowd, especially considering it wasn’t exactly _at_ the concert, is questionable. More cons than pros. At that point, anyway.
Love this seriously and even more when I found out they are married in reality
Who are married in real life?
@@lindas.martin2806 GEORGE BAKER ÀND LOUIE RAMSEY until her death in 2011
30:00 et seq . . . WHAT a blight Freeborn is! WHAT a blot on the escutcheon! WHAT a royal pain in the gluteus minimus, medius AND maximus! How ARE CCs and DCCs chosen??
Turn the bloody volume up.
Also, the volume on several other of these videos is bloody awful.
Thank Goodness Wexford is happy go lucky in attitude. Burden is never happy! He's miserable all the time.
God I can't stand that
partner of Wexford's!
He's a complete f**!
If he was on his own
there'd be no crimes
solved. Forsure!
sometimes i don’t know why i torture myself by watching these, Reg is incoherent and Mike is a neurotic. i never get the final plot and have to watch it again.
I prefer inspector Barnaby.
Search warrants are unsettlingly easy to come by, in this programme. No real “probable cause” standard to meet, a hunch and a request suffice.
Different laws and different time period! I think that people can be hanged, or was that is a different period?
@@goldbournemascal3621 Good lord no. The death penalty was abolished in the UK some time in the 1960s (I believe 1962 but I'm too lazy to look it up!) This may seem a long time ago, but not when you think that the death penalty in the Netherlands was actually abolished a century previously, in the 1860s.
Well that was a lollapalozza ...
if u find a body from a dead people or clothes drifting in water do not tell the cops they find u are guilty even u know nothing so better say nothing and let it be

17:58 if this guy is the killer , this episode will be disappointing to say the least . He looks too much the psycho killer type . In one of the Poirot's same actor was scarred for life , shell shocked from ww1, door to door women's hosiery/stockings salesman . one of christie's red herrings . of course he wasn't the killer . the least you'd suspect is revealed as the killer in the end of a really good detective murder mystery
I think the songs are Pink Floyd rip offs. Shine on you crazy Diamond.
Right. I also thought immediately of Shine on you crazy diamond when 'Zeno' and his band did that song.
Style-wise, it's a Leonard Cohen rip off. I Don't know any of Pink Floyd's songs because when I first heard their version of music, I couldn't stand it. Still can't. Maybe Cohen imitated Pink Floyd. I don't know.
I don’t know who got married. ??? Or why Mike acted upset ???
I dont know about his hate, but his love and happiness of his normal society is not obvious either. They send Detectives for minimum trouble?
I do jot understand anything
Donald Sumpter was hot. Even bald, he was hot.
I think using Capaldi to sing is a not so subtle jab at the new music of the time. His voice is awful.
