  • Haulover Inlet in Florida is a popular spot for experienced boaters seeking a thrill. Known for its challenging conditions and strong currents, the inlet connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Intracoastal Waterway and is famous for its rough waves and strong winds, which can make boating hazardous. Despite the risks, many boaters are drawn to the inlet's challenging conditions and the opportunity to navigate through it.

    I worked on high performance boats a couple of weeks at a time for a couple of years in the Miami area, mostly around Dania. I can count the actual number of fun days on the water I had on ZERO fingers. But I was being paid to be there, so fun wasn't in the plan. I was not an experienced boater and it impressed me how quickly things can go from OK to really bad in a few seconds.

    Been boating since the early 50's, in salt water. Started on a 16' W/OB of my dad's. Progressed to larger boats, up to a 50' Day Fisher Boat out of Davy Jones Locker in Newport Beach Ca.
    In rough seas try to stay into the wind and the waves. Throttle up the face and throttle back into the trough. Don't let the waves through you off of a straight approach. Never try to power through rough water, unless you want a deck awash in human upchuck from your passengers.

    • @duanesamuelson2256
      @duanesamuelson2256 7 місяців тому

      You have a few years on me (you were boating when I was a kid playing at the docks and on the breakwater at king harbor in 61 or so)
      However its hard to tell in the pictures but unless it's actual storm waves the east cost in FL is pretty mild. Small craft advisory at 3' to 4' swells. The inlets have a lot of both top and bottom currents running in different directions depending on the tide and prevailing winds piling up water.
      I seldom see the water as bad, but I'm damn careful near shore at all times.
      Happy boating

    I’m actually surprised that the state of Florida hasn’t posted signs that ban jet skis from the inlet except for passage only. I would assume it would be tough for them to enforce since they don’t sit there and patrol it constantly, but if they made the ticket a decent amount people would stop playing in the inlet.

      agreed and no stopping in the inlet unless for emergency reasons.But they could make jetskis have a high flag so they can be easily spotted by boaties.When you think about it,jetski users are at a higher chance of getting seriously hurt by a boat yet they seem to run amok in the inlet and out around it.Its basically a highway to the ocean,not a playground.

It's pretty narrow, busy and has extreme wind over tide chop - so why? Usually any authorities will go totally over the top when it comes to safety and be over cautious.

    @01:48 Should be an instructional video on how to enter the inlet. Smooth as butter right there. Ironic that it may have been the only time he piloted that boat was to steal it.

    All I can think about is my back every time they hit a wave hard like that. I used to fuss at my Daddy when he hit waves too hard. He finally started taking them easier in my Mama and me. If he didn’t he knew we wouldn’t go fishing with him, at least off shore. There is no way I could do any of that now. I would be screaming not for fun but from pain. Ohh my. They will be paying when they get older.

    On the boats being out when "small craft advisory", would depend upon the "Capt's training & experience" along with how the vessel is equipped. On the couple in the channel "needing" rescue? In currents, if they cannot go against the current (why fight it?) wouldn't one use the current to direct towards shore. Granted, not getting out where you want but can walk back? It is easier to get someone to deliver you to where you want to be at but? If the situation is going to get to be a problem? Use currents to express you and save energy for the last meter when it wants to boil up around the exit point.

    Boats like the Water-Dream have very little protection from the water. Busting through waves will get you wet. Many other boats are more capable of keeping you dry as the hull / Bow foils out to push water away. Sad how some people are getting caught-up in the new fangled design that looks like a million dollars but submerges like a sub!

    • @NeverEnoughPyro40
      @NeverEnoughPyro40 8 місяців тому +1

      @bigdh2os814 The problem isn’t the design of the hulls! The problem is the people operating them, Any experience loader can see that they lack the knowledge and experience needed to handle both the vessel’s and rough conditions!

    • @Chris-hx3om
      @Chris-hx3om 7 місяців тому

      @@NeverEnoughPyro40 No, the design of most open bow boats is just not suitable for those conditions. They need to 'stay in their lane', ie Flat smooth lakes!

    As a lifelong Floridian of almost 50 yrs., say what you will about out politics, and govt and socio-political issues, but one thing is for sure... our LEOs and the various agencies they are with. Sheriffs, FWC, Park Rangers, FWP, Life/Coastguard, etc... do not mess around, and are THE most professional well trained groups, and their records show the numbers... they are good men and women and they are either your best line of defense or your worst enemy if you cross them. Ive been on both sides of that narrative and have family as a sheriff.. and can attest to their efforts.

    In cases like what happened between the boat and the jet ski at 47 minutes, I completely blame the jet skier. They are faster and more maneuverable than the boats, so it is their responsibility to play safely.
