Sarah, I told myself, 'no more modules'! 5 min into this I bought the Doepfer module. I was quite surprised how inexpensive it was. I have a number of acoustic sourced to play with. I could listen all day to these experiments. You're an awesome teacher and eurorack performer.

Sarah, super interesting masterclass, brilliantly explained and illustrated. Whilst I do not play any acoustic instrument, I feel the techniques could work very well using the Benjolin controlled by a 0-cntrl and since I own many of the modules you use, I can start with your patch examples. Thank you and MakeNoise for making this happen.
This video has me reevaluating whether I should just sell all of my pedals and use the proceeds to help fund a small modular system for electric and upright bass. The duet section has me thinking that this is exactly where I want to be. Rad video, and a reasonably approachable explanation of how the concepts are actualized. Break out the buchla bongos it's time for jazz in space.

Great video, with a bunch of excellent ideas for setups of any size--from a beauty box to a wall. Another great envelope follower technique is using it to slow down the clock of your accompaniment patch, leaving you a little extra breathing room in the arrangement when you play loud. An attenuverter works great here--you can reverse that relationship with a quick knob turn.

Loved those weird sounds. Don't have any of those modules, nor do I play trumpet, but I manage to create my own crazy stuff. My Doepfer A-137-1 enables line and mic level input to be mangled and manipulated into my system. Eurorack noodling is so addictive. ; )
Some wonderful sounds there. Guess I'm not the only one eyeing the Buchla-esque case lurking in the background.

Hi Sarah, .. like your approach, here.
This method, that you're doing, was in my mind, too, when I first got into modular. I started with MI Beads, the granular texture thing seemed pretty appealing, along with a Strymon A.A1, which is similar to your Doepfer 119. Beads having audio stereo in, which the A.A1 can furnish (stereo). Instruments? .. electric guitar, keyboard synth, and whatever I can scrape off the internet.
It's ongoing journey. I'm more a fan of the slight inflections, of signal,from the module(s) than I am of anything else, so far. And yes, I also, was interested in the real time playing aspect, and massaging by the modules was something that I wanted to have happen, .. however, depending on what I've got set, .. latency, to outright delay is common, for some of the sounds, that I gravitate to.
So, what I've ended doing is making mostly dry recordings of my instruments, (which is usually following the BPM of another musician, on a music collaboration site) .. and then throwing this track into the module system. Sometimes, I have some kind of synch click, at the beginning .. or not .. it usually isn't that difficult to line it up, to the base track, with the synthed modded outcome, either way.
The benefit is, the playing part is in the can, so to speak .. so, if there's much delay or lag .. it doesn't matter. Feeding the dry track into Beads, from the Strymon A.A1. Now, I've got both hands free, and all of my concentration to the changing of patch cords, setting attenuvertors, or the other primary setting knobs, of Beads. It is a nice luxury, .. well worth the extra step of making that dry recording, at the first.
IF I were to get anything else, besides my Beads, Rings, & Bitbox Micro .. I think it would a be Retro Mechanical Labs standalone unit. They make a great sounding fuzz effects, and AM radio like, .. ah! .. it's pretty hard to describe. If you haven't heard one, .. I would recommend you at least listen to one, for awhile.

Great video, I enjoyed that. I know it's sponsored by a hardware company, but for anyone that can't justify (or afford) getting real modular, all those techniques work with modular software too like VCV Rack.

There's a huge range of sounds.... it's pretty funny to see you trying to get a normal sound from the instrument...it doesn't seem possible no matter how hard you try...its like a cartoon
how do you boost your signal after morphagene I have had problems with low low sound level post morphagene . Do you think I need a new/different VCA ? I'm using doepfer A-135-2 vca/mixer . my case is A-100 6u . would a different vca possibly be better ? or any other way to boost it ? any help is greatly appreciated .
This may or may not help….but turn the SOS nob at the top of the module, in the center, fully CW (clock wise). This controls the output. I can’t remember of hand, but there’s a way to control the input level as well, but this doesn’t sound like your problem.

@@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC I totally agree with you. I have several "pitch to cv" units - doepfer, expert sleepers, korg, analogue systems and a woggle bug. None of them are very effective. But all can generate a cv which can be processed and used to modulate many other units. Also There are several circuits that convert resistance to cv you could even use pressure sensitive pads on the mouthpiece to generate cv's from the embrosure "?" Using an instruments unique articulations to produce cv's is what it's all about!
@@donramsay169What unit from Doepfer do you have? I just know Behringer Perfect Pitch which is sold out and Noise Lab Tailgater which is not yet available, and Behringer K-2...
Great video Sara! Also into hooking acoustical instruments into modular synths, in my case clarinet. Besides using audio for CV generation I'm also using motion sensors.
